1 Madagascar: Nature & Culture An Adventure with Walt Anderson & Alison Ormsby June 16-29, 2019 Short-legged Ground-Roller by Heinz Ortmann Madagascar, the 4th-largest island in the world, brims with biodiversity, justifying the title of the Eighth Continent. Over 80% of its described species are endemic, found nowhere else, including over 100 species of lemurs (1/3 of the world s primate families occur only here!), 11 species of Malagasy carnivores (a unique family), more than 30 species of tenrecs, at least 107 endemic bird species (six families restricted to Madagascar!), >80 species of chameleons (1/2 the world s species), 103 species of geckos, boas and other non-venomous The Great (!) Migration snakes, on some the Serengeti of the Plains world s rarest (and most attractive) tortoises, a stunning array of native frogs (~450 species), bizarre and beautiful invertebrates, 10 endemic families of plants, more than 1000 species of orchids, 170 palm species (165 endemic), and much more. In addition, there is fascinating cultural diversity, blending elements of Indonesian, African, Arabian, and European influences. Because of Madagascar s size, we can only sample that great diversity, so we have chosen ecological hotspots to give us the best return on our investment. We offer this as an opportunity to see and photograph the landscapes and wildlife of an amazing country almost like another planet while learning some history and culture too. We hope you will join us for an adventure of a lifetime!

June 16: Antananarivo (Tana), afternoon visit to Lac Alarobia. We begin our adventure with a brief afternoon orientation and an outing to Lac Alarobia. A private sanctuary within the city, this RAMSAR wetland harbors up to 14 threatened endemic bird species, including Meller s Duck, Madagascar Little Grebe, and Madagascar Pond Heron. In addition to several species of ducks, we could see as many as 5-7 species of herons and egrets. Other endemics to watch for include Mascarene Martin, Madagascar Kestrel, Madagascar Coucal, Malagasy Black Swift, Madagascar Wagtail, Madagascar White-eye, Madagascar Mannikin, and Red Fody. What a fine You must arrive in Tana prior to our afternoon get-together. If you arrive the night before, Rockjumper will gladly help arrange lodging, but this is not included in the tour price. Whenever you arrive in the bustling capital city, you will be struck by the uniqueness of the Malagasy culture, a mixture of African and Asian influences reflected in the landscape and architecture.
3 June 17: Antananarivo to Andasibe, afternoon in Analamazaotra Special Reserve. We depart early to drive eastwards across the Highland Plateau through a fascinating cultural landscape to the famous reserve of Analamazaotra. En route, we may see Hamerkop, Brown-throated Martin, Madagascar Cisticola, and others. We ll have 3 nights at a delightful hotel that overlooks a lake at the edge of the forest reserve, with wildlife right at our doorstep. Fluorescent-green day geckos scuttle on the outside walls of our chalets and Madagascar Wagtails flit along the paved walkways. With luck, we may be serenaded by the world s largest extant species of lemur, the handsome Indri, whose haunting calls are somewhat similar to the songs of Humpback Whales. Overnight: Hotel Feon ny Ala June 18-19: Analamazaotra Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park. Certainly a target species in this area is the magnificent Indri, Called Babakoto ( Ancestor of Man ) by the local Betsimisaraka tgribe. We ll take steep trails in the preserve to seek these amazing primates, the largest living lemur and the only one to lack a conspicuous tail. If we are fortunate to be able to watch a family group, it will surely rank among our most precious memories. Other lemurs we might see include Common Brown and Grey Bamboo Lemur, and we will also search known roosting sites for the nocturnal and inquisitive Weasel Sportive Lemur and Eastern Avahi. The moist rainforest cloaking Madagascar s eastern escarpment protects the richest assemblage of birds on the island, including many that are rare or poorly known. Over 100 bird species have been recorded from within the small reserve of Analamazaotra. We will search for such specialties as Madagascar Flufftail, the elusive Madagascar Wood Rail, Madagascar Blue Pigeon, Greater Vasa Parrot, Madagascar Spinetail, Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher, Madagascar Paradise Flycatcher, Madagascar Cuckoo-Shrike, Ward s Flycatcher, Tylas Vanga, Madagascar Starling, Long-billed and Spectacled Tetrakas, White-throated Oxylabes, Nelicourvi Weaver, and Souimanga Sunbird. Amongst the most sought-after of Madagascar s birds are those of the five families endemic to the Malagasy region: the peculiar mesites, exquisite ground-rollers, Cuckoo Roller, vangas and tetrakas (formerly Malagasy warblers). We will make a special effort to locate as many representatives of these charismatic families as possible, as well as those of two endemic sub-families, the couas and asities. Indri by Jonathan Rossouw In the forested hills around Analamazaotra, we hope to find the localised Red-fronted and Blue Couas, Velvet Asity, and flocks of vangas that may include Whiteheaded, Chabert s, Blue, Red-tailed, Hook-billed and the unique Nuthatch Vanga. The vanga family is perhaps the world s most spectacular adaptive radiation (Birds of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean Islands). The diversity within this group is mind-boggling. Blue Vanga by Dubi Shapiro Some of the wonderful forest species we will target here include Madagascar Blue Pigeon; Common Sunbird-Asity; Crossley s Vanga; Common and Dark Newtonia (in the Vanga family); Wedge-tailed, Green, Stripe-throated and Common Jery; the newly described Cryptic Warbler; Forest Fody and, if we are very lucky, the gorgeous Pitta-like Ground- Roller. Rufous-headed and Short-legged Ground-Rollers also occur here but are extremely difficult to find in winter.
4 Common Sunbird-Asity by David Erterius Madagascar Cuckoo-Shrike by Rich Lindie Highland marshes around the borders of the reserve support some of the island s threatened birds. Madagascar Swamp Warbler and Madagascar Rail are likely to be seen here, and we may also find Madagascar Partridge and Madagascar Snipe if we are exceptionally lucky. In the evenings, we will embark on night walks. Nocturnal outings are a thrilling and, indeed, essential part of any trip to Madagascar, and Analamazaotra is one of the best sites to search for the island s night birds. Specialities here include Madagascar Long-eared Owl, Madagascar Scops-Owl, and both Madagascar and the very rare and Collared Nightjar. While seeking these nocturnal birds, we will not neglect the immense variety of non-avian life that also emerges after dark. Although Madagascar is famous for the spectacular lemurs that have adapted to a daytime existence, a number of species of these primitive primates remain, like their African cousins, the galagos, denizens of the night. These include Eastern Avahi and the diminutive Goodman s Mouse Lemur. The island s reptile and amphibian ( herp ) fauna is equally fascinating, and we will certainly be impressed if we find some of the colorful and bizarre frogs, chameleons, and geckos that dwell in the rainforest. In particular, we will search for the giant Parson s Chameleon and three species of eccentric leaf-tailed geckos: the huge Uroplatus fimbriatus, the bizarre, highly cryptic Uroplatus phantasticus (Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko), and the moss-like Uroplatus sikorae. These amazing animals are threatened by the illegal trade in wild pets and Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko by Markus Lilje loss of habitat, so preserves like this are their best hope. Mantidia National Park lies a short distance from Perinet, protecting a large expanse of primary forest at a somewhat higher altitude. Though it has only recently been opened to the public, Mantadia is now an essential destination on any birding trip to Madagascar, having rapidly gained a reputation as an excellent site for a handful of highly sought-after forest birds. Not least amongst these are a number of species formerly considered to be restricted to the poorly accessible rainforests of the far northeast, such as Red-breasted Coua and Scaly Ground Roller. Both these species are, however, very rare in the park and we will require a hefty dose of luck to see them. Other attractions in this scenically beautiful park include the vocal Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, the elusive Diademed Sifaka (considered by many to be the world s most beautiful lemur), endearing Red-bellied Lemur, and Painted Mantella, a spectacularly colored forest frog that is convergent with the poison dart frogs of the New World. Much of the birding in Mantadia National Park can be enjoyed from the wide road that runs up into the reserve, although seeing the skulkers of the forest understory will require that we take to the forest trails. Overnight: Hotel Feon ny Ala
5 June 20: Andasibe to Antananarivo. After a final morning outing in the Andasibe area to catch up with any forest specialities we might have missed, we will return to Tana. If time allows after check-in at our comfortable hotel, we may visit the Tsimbazaza Zoo. While strolling along the open paths through the extensive gardens, we could encounter some of Madagascar s widespread but still fascinating species, including Madagascar Malachite Kingfisher, Madagascar Turtle Dove, Crested Drongo, Madagascar Hoopoe, Common and Stripe-throated Jery, Madagascar Brush Warbler, Red Fody, and Madagascar White-eye. Overnight: Relais des Plateaux June 21: Antananarivo to Berenty via Fort Dauphin. This morning we will take a short flight to Fort Dauphin (also known as Toliagnaro) in the southeastern corner of the country. Upon arrival, we will transfer to the world-famous private lemur reserve of Berenty. The +- 4-hour drive takes us from the wind-blown but picturesque town of Fort Dauphin through wellwatered valleys packed with paddy fields and, finally, into the rain-shadow of the Andohahela Mountains, where the octopus-like Didierea trees are diagnostic of the spiny desert. As we near Berenty, the natural habitat is replaced by extensive tracts of sisal plantations, stretching as far as the eye can see. Berenty Lemur Reserve belongs to the De Heaulme family, who have set aside sections of gallery forest along the Mandrare River to conserve its population of lemurs and other wildlife. Torotoroka Scops Owl by Rich Lindie Tonight we will venture out in search of Torotoroka Scops Owl and the impressive White-browed Hawk- Owl, but may also encounter several species of attractive geckos (including the remarkable Plain and Painted Big-headed Geckos and unique Fish-scaled Gecko). Overnight: Berenty Lodge June 22: Berenty Lemur Reserve. Berenty is justly famous for its lemurs, not only because its deciduous woodland is home to no fewer than five species of these primates, but also for the ease with which they may be seen and appreciated in the wild. Brown Lemurs occur in large numbers during the day, and both White-footed Sportive and Grey Mouse Lemurs are regularly encountered on night walks through the reserve. The clear favorites are the diurnal Ring-tailed Lemurs and Verreaux s Sifakas. While the bands of cat-like, quizzical ringtails are often the first to steal visitors hearts (as well as any spare fruit they may have on their persons!), their appeal is easily matched by the strikingly Ring-tailed Lemurs by Markus Lilje patterned sifakas, with their soulful expressions and bizarre, bipedal dancing locomotion. To spend time with groups of these gentle creatures will certainly be one of the highlights of our Madagascar adventure.
6 A further mammalian highlight of Berenty is visiting the Madagascar Flying Fox roost, where about 300 of these impressive animals, sporting four-foot wingspans, spend their day squabbling and presumably sleeping. In addition, we will be on the lookout for the numerous Giant Couas that stroll along the well-cleared paths through the woodland, along with many other woodland birds. We can also enjoy the bizarre plants in remnants of spiny forest. Potential new species we may find here include Reed Cormorant, Peregrine Falcon, Madagascar and Frances s Sparrowhawks, Helmeted Guineafowl, Madagascar Sandgrouse, Madagascar Cuckoo-Hawk, and Alpine Swift. Overnight: Berenty Lodge Giant Coua by Rich Lindie June 23: Berenty Lemur Reserve to Fort Dauphin to Tana. Depending on the time of our domestic flight, we may have a final morning to enjoy and photograph the approachable wildlife in Berenty, as well as visit the well-presented local museum, which displays one of the few complete Elephant-bird eggs in the world. We then transfer to Fort Dauphin for our return flight to Antananarivo. Overnight: Relais des Plateaux June 24: Antananarivo to Mahajanga, afternoon boat trip to Betsiboka Delta. Today we fly to Mahajanga on the NW coast of Madagascar for the final leg of our island adventure. Upon arrival, we will wind our way through Mahajanga, which has a distinctly East African feel about it. Hand-drawn rickshaws and roadside markets full of fresh, tropical fruit and vegetables dominate the town. In the afternoon we should have enough time to take a motorized boat ride up the Betsiboka Delta. This seldom-visited region is home to two of Madagascar s rarest and most endangered birds, Bernier s Teal and Madagascar Sacred Ibis, and we have an excellent chance of finding both of these specialties during our outing. Other noteworthy birds we may encounter on this journey are Madagascar (Humblot s) Heron, African Openbill, Greater Flamingo, African Spoonbill (a very rare bird in Madagascar), and Madagascar Harrier-Hawk. After the boat trip, we return to our hotel in Mahajanga. Overnight: Hotel Roches Rouges June 25: Mahajanga to Ankarafantsika NP. The landscape opens up rather starkly after leaving the town, and we will pass cashew nut sellers and ladies washing and drying their laundry next to the many small streams that we pass along the way to Ampijoroa. Rolling hills of dry grasslands, interspersed with stunted palm trees and valley bottoms filled with rice fields, dominate the scenery. En route to the reserve, we may encounter Purple, Striated and Squacco Herons, as well as flocks of Black Herons performing their bizarre umbrellafeeding routine in the roadside water-bodies. We can expect to arrive at our destination, Ampijoroa Forest Station, in time for late lunch. Ampijoroa, a ranger base and research center that also provides hutted and camping accommodation, is situated in the extensive deciduous forests of the Ankarafantsika Reserve and will be our comfortable base for the next two nights. It is famous as the home of World Wildlife Fund s Ploughshear Tortoise captive breeding program and is an ideal base from which to search for the numerous endemic birds of the region. Sickle-billed Vanga by Dubi Shapiro
7 On arrival at the forestry station we should encounter numerous camp residents such as the gaudy Broad-billed Roller, screeching Lesser Vasa Parrot, Crested Drongo, Madagascar Magpie- Robin, Sakalava Weaver, Madagascar Hoopoe, Madagascar Paradise Flycatcher, Madagascar Green Pigeon, and Malagascar Turtle Dove before birding the dry semi-deciduous forest that surrounds the camp and Lake Ravelobe. There will also be an optional pre-dinner night walk this evening in search of the large range of reptiles and mammals that occur in these fauna- and flora-rich woodlands. Overnight: Gite Ampijoroa June 26-27: Ankarafantsika NP We have two full days to explore the network of trails through the dry forest surrounding Ampijoroa, in search of the many birds restricted to this region. Foremost amongst these are the secretive White-breasted Mesite and the jewel-like Schlegel s Asity, which recalls a miniature Bird-of-paradise! We will also concentrate on finding the highly localized Van Dam s Vanga and the two species of coua that are restricted to these deciduous forests: Red-capped and Coquerel s. Other birds we will be on the lookout for while searching for these specialties include Madagascar Crested Ibis; Madagascar Buttonquail; Frances s Sparrowhawk; Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher; and Rufous, Hook-billed, White-headed, Chabert, and Red-tailed Vangas. Schlegel s Asity by Rich Lindie No fewer than eight species of lemur occur in the vicinity of the camp. We are likely to be treated to excellent views of the comical Coquerel s Sifaka and Common Brown Lemurs during the day, while at dusk the rare Mongoose Lemur becomes active. After dark, we will search for the nocturnal Western Avahi (Woolly Lemur), Milne-Edward s Sportive Lemur, and Grey Mouse Lemur. If we are lucky, we may also find the recently described (1998) Golden-brown Mouse Lemur, Microcebus ravelobensis, one of the world s smallest primates and only known from the immediate vicinity around Lake Ravelobe. We will also spend explore along the edge of the adjacent Lake Ravelobe, where we hope to find the critically endangered Madagascar Fish Eagle, a pair of which is resident here. Whitethroated Rail, Humblot s Heron, Madagascar Jacana, and Allen s Gallinule favor the waterside vegetation, while noisy groups of Sicklebilled and Blue Vangas are often seen moving along the forest fringe. Reptiles are also plentiful along the trails and we might encounter the impressive Giant Hognosed Snake, as well as several smaller species of snake (amazingly, there are no venomous snakes in Madagascar!), Oustalet s Chameleon (the world s largest species) and the aptly Coquerel's Sifaka by Rich Lindie named Rhinoceros Chameleon, with its enlarged nasal protuberance. Impressively spiky Cuvier s Iguanids scurry around the campsite along with Wide-tailed Plated Lizards.
8 June 28: Ankarafantsika to Tana. After a final morning s outing to see and/or photograph the impressive diversity of birds, lemurs, and herps around Ampijoroa, we will return to Mahajanga where, if time allows, we can head out to a nearby seasonal pan to inspect the shorebirds, which usually include Black-winged Stilt and Kittlitz s Plover and sometimes the rare, endemic Madagascar Plover. Depending on water levels, the far end of the pan might be blanketed in water lilies; if so, we will almost definitely be rewarded with rafts of beautiful African Pygmy Goose and perhaps the odd Greater Painted-snipe. The latter is polyandrous, with females being dominant to and more colorful than males. The adjacent scrub and thickets also usually support good numbers of Madagascar Cisticola, Olive Bee-eater, Madagascar Mannikin, and Red Fody. We will then return to Antananarivo. Overnight: Relais des Plateaux June 29: Tana and departure. Today we depart from Tana to connect with our international flights home to begin the process of reflection on our visit to this lost world. Rhinoceros Chameleon by David Erterius Please do not book your flights until the trip is confirmed as operating.

Trails in Analamazaotra and Mantidia may be steep and slippery, so trekking poles may be useful to you. Tourism facilities are much improved over a decade ago, but this is a developing country, and accommodations may be modest at some of our destinations; this is more than compensated for by having proximity to amazing wildlife. You should exercise reasonable caution regarding food and water (see travel recommendations). There will be a few long travel days, but there are ample opportunities for walking on this trip. Upon registration, you will be sent a medical health form to fill out in order to participate, and you will need to sign the typical liability release. You can get real assistance (including money with the assistance services) incredibly quickly (they can deposit money directly to your designated account). There are several options: ExactCare is comprehensive, customizable, and affordable based on a fraction of the trip cost. It can even cover preexisting conditions if it is applied for within 15 days of making the trip deposit (certain guidelines apply)! Well worth being proactive. ExactCare can help reimburse you for losses with respect to trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, missed connection, lost baggage/baggage delay, medical expense benefit (including dental), medical evacuation, and more. Options include ExactCare Value & Extra. AirCare is an alternative if you only want benefits directly related to flights (no medical). For a very modest fee, you can get paid for a delayed flight, missed connection, delayed bag, lost bag, or tarmac delay. If you have ExactCare, you do not need AirCare too. Please contact Berkshire Hathaway for specifics on your program based on our group trip cost and residency state. You may certainly travel without travel insurance, but personally, I have found that the unexpected is not at all impossible, and I always get it when I travel. I just think this is one of the best options available.
