It is an ecological community with concentrated vine plant species wending through large m deciduous and semideciduous trees, some with large buttresses. Along with many other endangered plants and animals, this type of forest supports the country s largest density of the rare Lumholtz s Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) hence the name Mabi, the local indigenous word for the mammal. What s left now of the original forest, just over approximately 1000 ha, is only four per cent of its size before human habitation. Wildlife spotting Like many parts of far north Queensland, amazing and diverse wildlife awaits you on the tableland. There are more than 300 established species of birds in the region with many more vagrants. The birdlife includes the glorious Golden Bowerbird (Prionodura newtoniana), Victoria s Riflebird (Ptiloris victoriae), the elusive Noisy Pitta (Pitta versicolor), as well as the: l Lesser Sooty Owl (Tyto multipunctata) l Australian Brushturkey (Alectura lathami) l Orange-footed Scrubfowl (Megapodius reinwardt) l Double-eyed Fig Parrot (Cyclopsitta diophthalma) l Topknot Pigeon (Lopholaimus antarcticus) l Spotted Catbird (Ailuroedus melanotis) l Black Butcherbird (Cracticus quoyi) l Chowchilla (Orthonyx spaldingii) The Southern or Double-wattled Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) forages around the more open areas outside the rainforest regions and is often seen by visitors. So we went straight to the authors, James and Deborah Gleeson, for this special Q&A. GIVEN THE BOOK S AMAZING TITLE AND RAMIFICATIONS, HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE THIS? We began with a simple question: How do you reduce the impact of land development on wildlife? And with that question we had a title for the book and a focal point for our research. We then designed the book specifically for its intended readers. We wanted the book to be engaging and educational but, above all, we wanted it to be practical so that the measures we describe can be applied. WHAT PROCESSES DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE IN RESTORING THE BALANCE BETWEEN DEVELOPMENT AND DESTRUCTIVE HUMAN ACTIVITY? In striving to achieve a balance we need to understand the impacts of development on wildlife and look for more efficient ways of minimising those impacts. We believe a good process is to identify the options that are currently available for reducing the impact of development on wildlife, and evaluate their effectiveness. From this knowledge, appropriate measures can be selected for a particular situation, improvements can be made to current measures and better measures can be developed. WHAT DID YOU FIND TO BE A MAJOR DEVELOPMENT ISSUE WHEN DEALING WITH A LARGE-SCALE OPERATION; FOR EXAMPLE, MINING OR PIPELINE PROJECTS? Generally, loss and fragmentation of habitat are the main issues with large-scale developments and native wildlife. To combat unavoidable habitat removal, we need a better understanding of how habitat can be restored in other degraded areas to help balance the impacts. CAN THE TWO REALITIES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND ECOSYSTEMS REALLY CO-EXIST ON A LONG-TERM BASIS? Humans need to use land in some form whether it is for food, shelter, resources or economic gain, but we cannot live without functioning ecosystems, including flora and fauna. By undertaking development in a sustainable manner, we can minimise the impacts on wildlife and still maintain social and economic standards in Australia in the future. 42 australian wildlife secrets HOW MANY YEARS DID THIS BOOK TAKE TO GET TO THE RELEASE? We dedicated many years of planning, researching and writing to produce this book. We also included over 100 photos and diagrams to illustrate the different measures. We invested a lot of time to ensure these photos and diagrams best represented the different measures, and only included the very best representations. WHAT IS THE MAIN PRACTICAL MEASURE A READER CAN DO TO REDUCE THEIR IMPACT ON WILDLIFE HABITATS? Many people manage land in some form or other, especially in rural Australia. If they are lucky enough to have natural areas on their property, there are a number of measures they can use to reduce their impacts on wildlife. These include avoiding land clearance, restricting livestock access to naturally vegetated areas, maintaining connectivity with the surrounding natural areas, using fauna inclusion fences, avoiding the use of barbed wire, controlling weeds, revegetating cleared areas, installing artificial tree hollows and creating a wildlife-friendly farm dam. These are all measures described in the book. AS WE ARE NOW IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY, WITH ALL THAT WE VE LEARNT FROM HISTORY, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INNOVATIONS THAT WILL BEGIN TO GROW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER WITH REGARDS TO DEVELOPMENT AND URBAN SPRAWL? Innovative ways to increase the connectivity of habitat for wildlife to move through the landscape are becoming increasingly important. In our book, we describe ways to improve habitat linkages, including recent developments such as land bridges, underpasses and glider poles. In addition, we need to develop new ways of retaining wildlife in urban areas that may lack habitat resources; for example, the use of artificial roosting structures and manmade retreats. Humans need to use land in some form whether it is for food, shelter, resources or economic gain, but we cannot live without functioning ecosystems, including flora and fauna. REDUCING THE IMPACTS OF DEVELOPMENT ON WILDLIFE James Gleeson and Deborah Gleeson CSIRO PUBLISHING, PAPERBACK ISBN: , RRP: $ pages with photographs and illustrations Available at all good bookshops and online at The rapidly increasing number of threatened flora and fauna species worldwide is one of the chief problems confronting environmental professionals today. This problem is largely due to the impact humans have had on land use through development (e.g. agricultural, residential, industrial, infrastructure and mining developments). The requirement for developers to implement measures to reduce the impacts of development on wildlife is underpinned by government legislation. A variety of measures or strategies are available to reduce such impacts, including those to reduce impacts on flora and fauna during land clearance, to deter fauna from potential hazards, to facilitate the movement of fauna around and through a development site as well as those to provide additional habitat. In recent years, considerable advances have been made in the techniques used to reduce the impacts of development on wildlife in Australia and overseas. Reducing the Impacts of Development on Wildlife contains a comprehensive range of practical measures to assist others to reduce the impacts resulting from development on terrestrial flora and fauna, and promotes ecologically sustainable development. It will be very useful to environmental consultants and managers, developers, strategists, policy makers and regulators, as well as community environmental groups and students.
