1 Sabah, Borneo 8 th 16 th January 2015 Leader: Mike Nelson Participants: Derek and Stella Atkins, Peter and Rabab Ward Black-and-Yellow Broadbill Mike Nelson / Birdtour Asia Borneo is the third largest island in the world and hosts over 50 endemics. This tour encompassed some of the best lowland forest birding sites including Sepilok and its famous canopy walkway and Orang-utans, the Kinabatangan River with elusive forest dwellers like the Bornean Ground Cuckoo and an array of magnificent hornbills, and we finished in the amazing Danum Valley where a good tract of primary forest harbours babblers, broadbills and pittas. This custom tour was arranged to find the wonders of the lowland forest and not only take in its more colourful denizens but also many mammals like the amazing show of bats at Gomantong Caves. After the groups arrival in Sandakan we began with a late morning walk around the lodge at Sepilok acquiring great looks at Black Hornbill, Ashy Tailorbird, Brown-throated Sunbird, Blue-eared Kingfisher and Whitechested Babbler but the star of the morning were three young Orang-utans, from the nearby Sepilok Rehabilitation Center, swinging from vines above us that put on a great show. The afternoon was spent around the Rainforest Discovery Center where we started with great looks at Crimson, Olive-backed and Copper-throated Sunbirds. We then walked up onto the impressive canopy walkway Sepilok is famous for and we began with great looks at Black-and-yellow Broadbill, flashing his stunning pink

2 chest, that posed nicely for us for an extended period of time. We also picked up Lesser Cuckooshrike, Bluethroated Bee-eater, Black-winged Flycatcher-Shrike and a pair of Wallace s Hawk-Eagles that were hanging around a huge stick nest they had built. Several flybys of both Black and Rhinoceros Hornbills were quite enjoyable plus as darkness closed in we enjoyed some Red Giant Flying Squirrels drifting across the canopy like some huge, rufous leaf falling. One cruised across and landed on the main trunk of a tree opposite us and we watched as it hiked its way up into the canopy. The next morning we arrived at the trail entrance to find a fruiting tree very active with four Black-and-Red Broadbill, several Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots, several Lesser Green Leafbirds and bulbuls. Across the way we also tracked down a nice Spectacled Spiderhunter and several Blue-throated Bee-eaters. Along the trail we quickly found a nice pair of Red-bearded Bee-eaters and a White-crowned Shama, our first Bornean endemic, popped out for some nice views. Farther along we tracked down a lovely pair of Red-naped Trogons which showed really well. A pair of noisy White-chested Babblers accompanied us along the creek trail we walked and several Little Spiderhunters visited the flowers from time to time. On the upper trail we found Rufous-winged Philentoma, Verditer Flycatcher, Fiery Minivet and Malaysian Pied Fantail just before we were about to leave but a small group of birds delayed our exit with a colourful duo of Raffles s Malkoha, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and a nice pair of Black-and-Red Broadbills. In the afternoon we drove to Gomantong Caves made famous for its harvesting of swiftlet nests which are made from hardened saliva and the huge mound of guano from the millions of bats that is home to colourful rufous cockroaches. On the way in we had great views of feeding Little Green Pigeons on a fruiting bush in the gardens and from the walkway we found Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker, Spotted Fantail and Sooty-capped Babbler. We also found a group of three Orang-utan, a mother and two young and watched as they frolicked around in the canopy swinging on the branches above us. On the walk back a surprise Black-crowned Pitta, our first Bornean endemic pitta, spooked from next to the boardwalk and we got nice looks at this stunning bird before it hopped off into the forest. Black-and-Red Broadbill Mike Nelson / Birdtour Asia We waited till dark back in the parking area and were treated to three Rhinoceros Hornbills as they flew past but soon enough the real show began. Small clouds of bats began murmurating above us as they began the evening. Small waves would gather above us as they ran the gauntlet from the mouth of the cave out into the darkening sky. Then suddenly we watched as the dark shape of a Bat Hawk swooped down on them scattering the cloud and isolating an individual. As they twist through the sky we watched as the Bat Hawk caught up with its prey and plucked it from the air. We took in this spectacle several times with the Bat Hawk taking two bats from several attempts. When it began to rain we hurried back to the van but just then a Peregrine Falcon came out of nowhere and dove on one of the clouds scattering them across the sky. It happened so quickly the Peregrine had turned and gone back to the canopy and out of sight before we really had a chance to see it well. A great finale to a wonderful day. The next day we woke, in our lodge along the Kinabatangan River, sadly to rain and this was to be the theme for the day. The few attempts we made to get out yielded some good birds like a large flock of garish Oriental Pied Hornbills, several perched Storm s Storks, Little and Large Green Pigeons, iridescent blue-billed Blackand-Red Broadbills, a nice pair of Malaysian Blue Flycatchers and a Stork-billed Kingfisher. A torrential

3 downpour at 3 in the morning woke many of us and we feared the worse for the next morning but that must have been the last throws of the rain because we woke to misty but clear skies. Excited by the lack of rain we headed off along the river and began the journey with some nice looks in great light of a Wrinkled Hornbill perched atop a riverside tree. A Crested Goshawk showed well on a dead snag and while taking this bird in, a large flock of Long-tailed Parakeets alighted the tree next to it with a splash of green and pink. Several Crested Serpent Eagles were seen drying off with wings outstretched and once into one of the smaller tributaries we found a nice troop of Proboscis Monkeys. Farther down we found a brightly coloured Scarlet-rumped Trogon that popped out above the boat showing off its bright scarlet breast. Several White-chested Babblers were calling close by when we heard the distinctive two note call of a Bornean Ground Cuckoo, the most famous, and elusive avian inhabitant of the Kinabatangan. We turned the boat round and headed back up river and close to where the call had come from we stopped and drifted for a bit. Then there came a course alarm call followed by a long series of deep calls. We pulled into the bank and scanned for a bit and with the calls continuing we zoned in on the bobbing tail of one of the birds and several of us managed to crouch down below the foliage line and see the bird perched on a crossing branch. Sadly those at the front were blocked but when we moved the boat out to try and get a better view the bird dropped and moved into the forest. We quickly backed the boat out and circled round to try and intercept the bird a bit farther along. Finding a nice gap in the trees at the edge we pulled in again and waited. We could hear them calling as they drew close then one popped up onto a branch and began calling and we could just see the tail bobbing. Again we waited all eyes focused on a gap between trees and sure enough the bird dropped down and walked across the gap in front of the entire boat for some great looks before it disappeared into thicker foliage. Pleased we d managed to get good lucks at one of Borneo s most desired targets we spent the rest of the morning with some more relaxed birding. Ruddy Kingfisher and Wrinkled Hornbill, Kinabatangan A sunning Greater Coucal showed well and several Green Imperial Pigeons flew over and we would see some occasionally perched. Black Hornbill added to our growing tally of these birds. A calling Ruddy Kingfisher was coaxed across the river and we found where it had landed from some crippling looks at its stunning purple/rufous plumage. Oriental Darter and Brahminy Kite put in an appearance before the heat began to rise for the day and we headed back for lunch. Just as we arrived back at the lodge there was a massive downpour and we feared the worse for the afternoon but scheduling a slightly later start meant we missed the rains and headed out with overcast skies and hopes that the rain had abated for the day. We headed back to the tributary and were soon into some good birds. Asian Drongo Cuckoo put in a good show with two birds calling back and forth along the river s edge. Pink-necked and Little Green Pigeons added some colour to the show and a pair of nesting Black-and-Red Broadbills was fun to watch as they gathered nesting material to add to the glob of hanging vegetation they were working on. Both Storm s Storks and Lesser Adjutant were seen circling above us. Adding to the colour were Common and Blue-eared Kingfisher and some nice close looks at perched Blue-throated Bee-eaters. The distant calls of several White-crowned Hornbills got our attention and we motored back upriver to where we were hearing them and as we scanned the tops of the trees we could see several flying through the canopy on our right and thankfully they were heading our direction. We pulled up into a large raft of water hyacinth and used it as an anchor as we waited. Then we spotted one through a gap but having to crane around and peer through foliage didn t yield great looks. Thankfully the group came right to the edge in a large tree overlooking the river. Several birds bounded around in this tree before collecting themselves and heading off. We could still hear some to our right and soon enough we could see a female perched up on the same snag we d seen them on before but as she called the males that had flown off before came back and we got some more great looks in the same tree before they dove out and joined the female. Well satisfied with great looks at these fantastic hornbills we pulled out into the river and began to drift slowly down the main channel. A leisurely hour was spent on the current watching as the forest drifted past. A close group of Sunda Silvered Langurs hopped about very close to the river s edge presenting us with some great looks. We waited till dark for our next target and as the darkness closed it we could hear the trilling calls of a Large Frogmouth across the river. With our electric motor we buzzed across to the other side to where the calls had come from and when we arrived the bird had moved to the edge farther up. As we began to maneuver closer it flew right over us and across the river. Seeing where it had gone in we

4 crossed back and with our torches scanned the river s edge but couldn t find it. We waited a few minutes and when it began to call again we pinpointed to the spot and squeezing in between several trees we were able to get in under the canopy and there on our left perched the huge brown, leaf-like Large Frogmouth. It was facing away from us but would turn its head from time to time and we could see the wide mouth from where it gets its name. We jockeyed for position pushing the boat back and forth so everyone could see but this was proving difficult so we pushed the boat out and turned it nose on to the bird and while doing this it turned to see what the commotion was and when we put the torch back on the bird there before all of us face on was the frogmouth for some crippling views. Hard to beat that for a day s finale. Happy that the rain had held off we even made back in time for dinner. Large Frogmouth and Storm s Stork, Kinabatangan Mike Nelson / Birdtour Asia Another bright morning greeted us with Bearded Pig and Water Monitor next to the lodge foraging in the mud. A Crested Serpent Eagle pulled up on a dead snag in the open area next to the lodge and scanned the mud where the pigs had been and seeing a potential meal dropped down near the kitchen. We waited as it eyed the ground for a few seconds before pulling out a huge earthworm and proceeded to eat it right there. Along the boardwalk next to the river was a lovely perched Storm s Stork bathed in some wonderful morning light making for some nice pictures, a good omen for the day. We again made our way down a tributary and on our second attempt found a Hooded Pitta which flew past a few times. While taking this in we heard a Diard s Trogon behind us across the river so we pulled back and as we emerged from the trees we could see the bird flying across the river so we pulled back into the trees and peered through the foliage in search of it. When only a small window or red was available we all hopped out and crept forward eventually managing some views through a small window of the calling bird before it flew off. A calling Plaintive Cuckoo was tracked down to its canopy haunt before we headed back to pack up and head off to the Danum Valley. The twenty minute boat ride from the lodge to the dock was uneventful till we spotted a White-fronted Falconet perched atop a huge dead tree. We pulled up to the shoreline and watched as it turned towards us to finish feeding on a dragonfly before flying left parallel to the boat for some great flight views of this, the world s smallest falcon. We then loaded up and began the drive to the Danum Valley which wasn t though as we picked up Collared Kingfisher, Long-tailed Shrike, Paddyfield Pipit, Black-headed and Dusky Munia, White-crowned Forktail and the all black subspecies of Oriental Magpie-Robin and a feeding Sambar Deer. Our drive into the fabulous Danum Valley culminated at the amazing Borneo Rainforest Lodge with warm staff to greet us with a nice cold towel. Our first morning in Danum Valley was greeted with some tea on the veranda and the flowers just below us were hopping with birds. Yellow-rumped and Yellow-breasted Flowerpeckers were jockeying for position on some small berries while both Little and Bornean Spiderhunter argued over the flowers. Behind us another spiderhunter in the form of a Yellow-eared kept to the right on some banana flowers. Olive-winged Bulbuls hopped along the pathway collecting moths from the pathway lights and were joined by an Oriental Magpie- Robin. Dusky Munias were bringing nesting material to a globule nest and a Plaintive Cuckoo arrived to join the fray giving us some great views of a bird we d only been looking up at the day before. A Lesser Fish Eagle was perched on a huge snag in the river and several Whiskered Treeswifts perched high and we watched as they would sally out for an insect and arrive back at their perched with wings held out before settling back to scan again. After breakfast we hit the main entrance road and were soon into birds with Yellow-bellied, Finsch s and Greycheeked Bulbul, Rufous-crowned Babblers and Spotted Fantail. We heard a Rufous Piculet and soon enough were getting great views of this tiny orange and rufous woodpecker clinging onto a close branch with its bright yellow feet. The loud call of Banded Broadbill alerted us to a pair of these wonderfully coloured birds and we enjoyed their iridescent blue bills before a Buff-necked Woodpecker pulled us away. The musical song of a Puff-backed Bulbul took a little bit of finding as the pair had buried themselves in a vine tangle but with some patience we all got good looks at them. We continued down the road for a while arriving at the canopy walkway and we enjoyed some time along here with some great birds. A calling Diard s Trogon was eventually tracked down but then the malkoha show started with a group of Raffles s showing really well with both male and several females foraging close by. A

5 Chestnut-breasted Malkoha was next skulking above us but still seen well when we craned around certain branches. Another Banded Broadbill was seen well as we looked down on it and then across from us a Blackbellied Malkoha emerged onto the canopy and we watched as it bounded around before flying across a gap towards us. We moved across to intercept it and got good views as it perched out before moving to the first tower where it was seen again. We headed back along the walkway to take in Black-naped Monarch and Brown Barbet and without realizing it the time had gotten to the point we needed to head back for lunch. We walked back to the first tower where we got stunning looks at Chestnut-breasted Malkoha perched right in front of us. Scarlet-backed Trogon & Red-naped Trogon Mike Nelson / Birdtour Asia The walk back yielded a small party of Brown Fulvetta with Green Iora and Purple-naped Spiderhunter. A lovely Scarlet-rumped Trogon showed particularly well but a pair of Short-tailed Babblers only gave fleeting glimpses inside their forest stronghold. Near the lodge we got great looks at Red-naped Trogon to complete a trogon trifecta. In the afternoon we began along the Hornbill Trail coming across a very obliging Chestnut-necklaced Partridge that showed well next to the trail before creeping off down a slope where it began calling loudly. Our next group was an active party of wailing Bornean Bristleheads which we could hear above us. A few minutes spent finding a gap in the canopy where we could see then provided us with some magnificent views of several birds feeding. Their bright orange-red heads shining in the morning light set off their black bodies against the greenery surrounding them. We followed this family party for a while taking in one of Borneo s only single species family. Coming out onto the main road we spent the remainder of the day on the canipy walkway. Here we added Common Hill Myna to the other species we d already seen and this time made it all the way across. On the far side along the road we found Pale Blue Flycatcher, a nice pair of Buff-rumped Woodpeckers and a Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker before we were collected for a ride back to the lodge. Our night drive yielded Thomas s Flying Squirrel and Brown Wood Owl but otherwise it was slow after some heavy rain had tempered the activity earlier. The next day we again began on the main entrance road with some spectacular views of Grey-headed Babbler. A pair bouncing around calling back and forth provided some early entertainment. At the canopy walkway those that wanted stayed here for the morning while Derek and Mike went on the Hornbill Trail. We climbed up a slightly muddy slope and tried for a Black-capped Babbler but it was reluctant to show. Our next target did rather much better with a beautiful male Blue-headed Pitta, one of Borneo s most wanted endemics, bounding across an open area in front of us stopping to dig up a worm for a light snack. The coarse, scratchy calls of a group of four Fluffy-backed Tit-Babblers let us know they were there and as they popped across the path in front of us they put on quite a show of puffing out their blue throat sacks and singing before bounding off to another perch to do it all over again. Our next bird was heard at some distance with its high pitched call but with some patience it showed itself well. A beautiful Striped Wren-Babbler moved through the understory sitting for quite some time on an exposed branch before moving on to continue his song.

6 The bridal veil plumage of a male Asian Paradise Flycatcher showed well as it drifted ghost like through the canopy landing high above us for some neck craning views. A flurry of activity meant a flock and we were soon sifting through female Asian Paradise Flycatachers, Rufous-crowned, Sooty-capped and Ferruginous Babblers, Yellow-bellied and Grey-cheeked Bulbul and Rufous-winged Philentoma. From here we made our way back to the lodge and just as we were about to step off the trail onto the main road we could hear the sweet song of a Bornean Blue Flycatcher. We tracked it down and got some nice views of this pretty, endemic flycatcher before lunch. Those that stayed on the canopy walkway did really well too, with great looks at a pair of Red-billed Malkoha, another pair of Common Hill Myna, Banded Kingfisher, Rufous and Grey-and-Buff Woodpeckers, Grey-rumped Treeswift, Scarlet Minivet, Hairy-backed Bulbul and Dark-throated Oriole were the pick of the litter. Sadly the afternoon was a wash out due to some heavy rain. Our last full day began with a trek up the coffin trail. We started off with some nice Dusky Broadbills above us near the river and a bit further down the path a nice Siberian Blue Robin hopped among the leaf litter shortly joined by a Black-crowned Pitta that hopped across the pathway behind us for some nice views. Near the top we got some breathtaking views over the forested valley below us and we also had great looks at a massive Giant Squirrel as it moved through the canopy. The views were left behind though as we searched out our next target, Blue-banded Pitta, sadly it was silent but the compensation was nice views of a Greychested Jungle Flycatcher. On the way down though we heard the long whistle of a Blue-banded Pitta but soon as it saw us, when it crested the ridge, it dropped down again unseen and moved off farther down slope. Just as we made it to the bottom of the trail the rain came again and forced us back to the lodge. In the afternoon we managed to find a less wet window of opportunity and visited a fruiting tree that was very active with Blue-eared Barbets and we also managed to pick out a Red-throated among the group. An Asian Fairy Bluebird showed for a few of us before it disappeared and then the large form of a juvenile Helmeted Hornbill cruised in and began to eat some of the red fruits that were growing in the canopy. Eventually the light drizzle became a downpour so we headed back to the dryness of the lodge for the afternoon which sadly also washed out our night drive. Bornean Bristlehead and Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker Mike Nelson / Birdtour Asia The next morning we again visited the fruiting tree we d stopped at the afternoon before and this morning the tree was alive with birds. Plenty of Blue-eared and Red-throated Barbets were calling as well as Goldwhiskered and Yellow-crowned. The arrival of several large birds at the back gave us great scope views of Bushy-crested Hornbills and when another hornbill arrived it turned out to be a magnificent Helmeted Hornbill. While we were taking in this mega we found two Rhinoceros Hornbill at the back that had sat quietly, unnoticed in the cover of the canopy but we managed some nice views of them through a window into the upper reaches of the tree. The Helmeted Hornbill moved around for a while foraging and eating the small red fruits at the top of the tree before suddenly bursting out of the canopy and swooping over our heads into a neighbouring tree providing us with some lovely views of the most magnificent species of this regal family. It then tired of its perch and glided across an open area to a more distant tree where it began its long, drawn out series of hoots that sped to a crescendo of cackles. Soon enough the female and probably juvenile from the evening before moved off in pursuit from behind the fruiting tree. Another short walk along the entrance road produced another, scope-able White-fronted Falconet, that showed well in the morning light as it sat atop its perch. A brief stay along the canopy walkway gave us a slew of birds we d already encountered but also included great looks at Buff-rumped Woodpecker, Arctic Warbler, Whiskered and Grey-rumped Treeswifts. Sadly our time here was up and we made a nice slow walk back to the scrumptious buffet at BRL before heading off to catch our flights back to Kota Kinabalu.
