3 1. EXPEDITION OVERVIEW Kartong Bird Observatory Ringer in Charge: Colin Cross (CJC) Secretary & Treasurer: Jez Blackburn BTO contact: Jez Blackburn Expedition leader: Roger Walsh Expedition Members (Jan/Feb 2015) Patrick Barker (PJB) Oliver Fox (OJLF) Lee Gregory (LVG) Mike Jackson (MFJ) Mike Marsh (MM) Chris McIntyre (CM) Richard Tomlinson (RT) Roger Walsh (RW) Summary During the two-week expedition (24/01/15 to 06/02/15) 1888 birds were captured (1639 of 120 species were newly ringed and 249 of 52 species were re-captures) at sites surveyed by the KBO. 29 sightings (9 species) of rings in the field were also made at KBO and elsewhere during the 2014/15 winter. Of the 1888 captures, 303 (16.0%) were birds ringed of 33 Western Palaearctic species, a higher proportion than in previous visits. Four species were captured by KBO for the first time: Blackcrowned Night Heron, Western Osprey, European Turtle Dove & Bronze-tailed Starling. Dryer conditions on the quarry wetlands this winter resulted in a higher number of sandpipers and small plovers captured whereas herons and jacanas were largely absent. In the coastal scrub fewer Nightingales and Willow Warblers were encountered and replaced by typical Sahelian species, such as Orphean Warblers and Whitethroats. Acknowledgements Many thanks to all the ringers that participated in the Jan/Feb 2015 expedition, whose relentless efforts in the hot and tiring conditions allowed an excellent sample of birds to be caught. The expedition was made possible by Colin Cross s organisation within The Gambia, arranging accommodation, transfers to and from the airport and ringing sites, clearing net lines and, most importantly, the permission to ring in the Kartong area. The Observatory would like to thank the Gambian Department of Parks and Wildlife Management, and in particular Mr Mawdo Jallow, for granting a group license to operate in the Kartong area, and the BTO for permitting the use of BTO rings ensuring that reliable feedback will be received and made available for the appropriate organisations in the future. We would like to thank Binta Janneh for her support, Hannie Stokbroekx and her staff for the kind hospitality at the Lemonfish accommodation. Particular acknowledgment is owed to Ernest Gibba, Sangmarie (Eboy) Jarju, Michael Colley, Dembo Jatta & Manuel Jatta for dedicated work preparing net rides and equipment before the expedition and providing fundamental support during the ringing. 4 2. DAILY SUMMARY Fri 23 Sat 24 Morning Afternoon/Evening Moon Arrived slightly late in Kartong and looked at nets set up by local team north of Lemonfish lodge. Three teams catching nightjars after dinner in good conditions (7 new birds and 2 recaptures). Ringing at Lemonfish scrub putting Inspected wetland areas for wader 3 additional nets up before dawn. Not netting sites and, as day got cooler, too busy but good introduction for new set up series of nets on main quarry team members. site. Limited to south-west corner due to lack of water this year. Sun 25 Ringing Quarry wetland and some sites closer to the Observatory. Excellent selection of small Palaearctic waders and then Blue-cheeked Beeeaters and swallows coming to drink. Mon 26 Ringing at Barracunto scrub site 1 with wide range of wintering migrants, including Redstart, Wryneck, reiseri Olivaceous Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat but, thankfully, not too many weavers or quelea. Tue 27 Slow opening nets and 4WD stuck in sand but busy morning ringing at Tesito scrub with lots of weavers and juvenile sunbirds to test our skills. Both African Pygmy and Grey-headed Kingfishers captured. Wed 28 Tesito reedbed and wetland nets open once bats had departed. Large mixed flocks of Black-headed and Village Weavers meant we were kept busy in the reeds but fewer Acrocephalus warblers than expected. Thu 29 Busy morning with many wader nets on Quarry and Observatory wetlands as well as crake traps. Still lots of small waders even though site drying out fast. Osprey caught in mist net was a surprise. Fri 30 More relaxed day ringing in the shade at Sandele Ecolodge with nets in this remnant of coastal forest, and surveying forest species like Western Bluebill and Grey-headed Bristlebill that cling on here. Sat 31 Repeated survey at Tesito reedbed and Observatory wetlands again busy with drinking weaver flocks. Both Broad-billed and Abyssinian Rollers caught over water but fewer Palaearctic waders today. Lamping nightjars after dinner. After late lunch, set up passerine nets in the mangrove and acacia scrub at Barracunto. Evening at Dadema Bar in the village after dinner. Hot afternoon setting up Tesito site requiring trimming of vegetation. Wader lamping after dinner not successful with moon already too bright. Very hot cutting rides in Typhus reedbed and setting wader nets on more open pools. Nets open in the evening at the Observatory for Cattle Egrets coming into roost. After a visit to Barracunto beach scouting for gulls and terns, two teams added more nets on the main quarry and Observatory wetlands. Potter traps targeted Black Crakes using fish-head bait. Took down wetland nets on hot afternoon. In the evening visited Sandele Ecolodge to set up nets at this exciting new woodland site. After lunch, the group travelled by boat up the Allahein River, reading colour rings on roosting gulls and terns. Dismantled nets and set up extensive passerine nets in the scrub-covered dune system at Barracunto. Too windy and bright for lamping after dark. 2 KBO REPORT WINTER 2014/15

5 Sun 1 Ringing at Barracunto scrub site 2 with lots of warblers as well as weavers leaving their roost. Numerous Common Whitethroat plus Western Orphean and Subalpine Warblers and Woodchat Shrikes. Mon 2 Early nets opened at Camp scrub site with Nightingale responding to tape lure but not getting caught. Busy first few rounds then quiet. Blue-breasted Kingfisher from 2011 retrapped and new Brown-throated Wattle-eyes. Tue 3 Ringing large area at Barracunto scrub sites 1 & 3. Highlights included Eurasian Hoopoe, 2 Nightingales, 2 Bonelli s Warblers, Little Greenbul and Red-faced Cisticola. Wed 4 Thu 5 Fri 6 Team staying at Sanyang continued to catch waders at dawn, others at the Observatory wetlands for a quieter morning. Repeated survey at Barracunto scrub site 1 and targeted waders on the remaining piece of wetland. Lots of doves, weavers and bishops coming to the water to drink. Record number of Black-winged Bishops. Final morning with a few nets on the main wetlands and a couple around the Observatory catching a handful of warblers but no waders. Packed remaining equipment and departed at midday for Banjul airport. Relaxed afternoon back at the lodge with some of the team out photographing wildlife. Set nets at Camp scrub site when the afternoon heat had decreased. Members of the group visited St Martin s School in the afternoon before setting up nets in the acacia and dune scrub at Barracunto. At dusk set nets across estuarine inlet and flushed waders towards it. Busy afternoon with the group splitting into teams visiting Kajabang clinic, Tujering woods and Tanji Beach before meeting up at Sanyang Beach. Set up a few wader nets and caught into the night. Afternoon spent reading colour rings at Kartong fishing village and using the whoosh net for Grey-headed Gulls. In the late afternoon set up nets on the quarry wetlands left pools. Sorting out equipment and washing dusty nets kept the group busy this afternoon. KBO REPORT WINTER 2014/15 3

26 4.4 ANALYSIS OF RECOVERIES Table 6. Separation of recoveries (birds defined as R, X, 1, O, S & C in Table 3) by date. Those (few) birds caught twice on the same day are separated into new (N) and repeat retraps (R). Birds caught twice or more times during the two-week expedition are treated similarly. As much of the ringing at KBO is carried out during the winter months, it is informative to look at older recoveries from previous winters: so the 0.5 to 1.5 years corresponds to Winter 2013/2014, 1.5 to 2.5 years = Winter 2012/2013, 2.5 to 3.5 years = Winter 2011/2012, and so on. Species not recovered are also shown for comparison. 47 10.1 IMAGES OF WESTERN PALAEARCTIC MIGRANTS During the 2014/15 winter 38 species of trans-saharan migrant were captured, recaptured or had rings sighted in the field. These included 12 species of shorebird (2 from Charadriidae and 10 from Scolopacidae) and 13 species of warbler (2 from Phylloscopidae, 6 from Acrocephalidae, 1 from Locustellidae and 4 from Sylviidae). Excluding rings sighted on birds not ringed at KBO (see Table 9), 23 birds of 10 species were returning Palaearctic migrants captured in previous years. The oldest passerine recaptured was a Western Olivaceous Warbler first ringed in Fig.2: Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla, NA82799, 26/01/15, 1 of 2 new birds captured but, unlike previous years, no returning migrants encountered (LVG). Fig.3: Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos, Y612137, 03/02/15, 2 new birds and 1 originally ringed at the same site in December 2012 (OJLF). Fig.4: Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca, Y612326, 01/02/15, the 2 nd KBO record of this species that usually winters further east in Africa (OJLF). Fig.5: Western Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis, NA82685, 01/02/15, 1 of a record 9 birds processed, previous highest of 6 individuals in 2011 (OJLF). Fig.6: Eastern Olivaceous Warbler Iduna pallida reiseri, Y612287, 26/01/15, distinctive, small subspecies migrates from the Maghreb region, the 6 th KBO record (LVG). Fig.7: Grasshopper Warbler Locustella naevia, Y612151, 05/02/15, 4 th KBO record of this elusive species (OJLF). KBO REPORT WINTER 2014/15 45

48 10.2 IMAGES OF AFROTROPICAL SPECIES A wide range of resident and intra-african migrants were captured and processed at KBO, providing new information on longevity, site fidelity and biometrics. 91 species were encountered including 9 from Columbidae, 5 from Alcedinidae and 8 from Cisticolidae. Dry conditions this winter meant an increased number of birds moved to the Kartong wetland area in search of drinking water. Fig.8: African Pygmy Kingfisher Ispidina picta, SB58269, 27/01/2015, 1 of 5 pygmy kingfishers from the coastal scrub, including 3 new birds (OJLF). Fig.9: Grey-headed Kingfisher Halcyon leucocephala, SB58294, 27/01/2015, 1 of 2 new birds caught during the fortnight (OJLF). Fig.10: Little Bee-eater Merops pusillus, SB58268, 26/01/2015, fewer this year than usual with just 2 new and 2 recaptured birds (OJLF). Fig.11: Northern Puffback Dryoscopus gambensis, RL35786, 27/01/2015, 1 of 3 new birds of 2 males and 1 female (LVG). Fig.12: Oriole Warbler Hypergerus atriceps, RL89018, 05/02/2015, 4 ringed and 1 recaptured. A juvenile here with less white fringing on head and gape visible (OJLF).
