ORIOLE BIRDING TOUR REPORT THE GAMBIA 26 TH NOVEMBER 3 RD DECEMBER 2010

Friday 26 th November Our morning flight to Banjul departed roughly on schedule with the six hour journey seeing us arrive around A hot and sticky arrivals hall was bustling with two flights arriving at once so clearing customs took a little longer than anticipated. Soon we were on the coach heading towards Kololi and our base for the next seven nights at the Senegambia Hotel. With light fading we did notch up a few of the common species en route and around the gardens such as Hooded Vulture, Speckled Pigeon, Bluebellied Roller, Yellow-billed Kite, Cattle Egret, White-crowned Robin-chat, Red-billed Hornbill and three Hammerkop in the grounds, part of a family group that had nested there. After a welcome beer and dinner we retired early with an early start in mind the next day. Saturday 27 th November A pre-breakfast walk around the grounds allowed us to become familiar with the common species and we recorded a good spread of birds particularly around the upper swimming pool area. Two Bearded Barbet fed high in a tree that also hosted Beautiful Sunbird, Common Bulbul, Red-billed Hornbill, Northern Black Flycatcher, Red-bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Red-eyed and Laughing Doves, Whitecrowned Robin-chat, Broad-billed Roller and two smart Oriole Warbler, a local speciality of coastal forest. African Palm and Little Swifts filled the sky overhead and five Hammerkop were seen. A male Shikra gave superb close perched views while Long-tailed Glossy and Bronze-tailed Glossy Starlings were seen down among the chalets. Two Mosque Swallows were seen, the only location during the tour where we saw this large hirundine. A short seawatch produced our first Grey-headed Gulls, Caspian Terns, Whimbrel and two Common Tern. Back up near the pool, another lively tree held Grey Woodpecker, Black-necked Weaver and Northern Puffback as well as giving further good views of Oriole Warbler and Northern Black Flycatcher. A Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird appeared in a tree next to us giving great views, and two Ring-necked Parakeets flew by. After breakfast we took a walk along to nearby Bijillo Forest Park. Small finches along the walk included Bronze Mannikin, Red-billed Firefinch, Grey-headed Sparrow and Village Indigobird. The lawns of the Kololi Hotel were full of birds and among parties of Piapiac we picked up Greater Blue-eared Glossy Starling, Long-tailed Glossy Starling, Yellow-billed Shrike, Yellow-crowned Gonolek and Green Wood-Hoopoe. The forest itself was quiet for the most part though Green Vervet Monkeys were common enough. Two more Yellow-crowned Gonolek and an African Grey Hornbill were seen, along with our first Brown and Blackcap Babblers, African Thrush and close range Little Bee-eaters. A Great White Egret flew over us as we walked back to the hotel where we enjoyed lunch at the Beach Bar. We met at 1700 for our first guided trip with Modou and as we assembled at the entrance gate a Splendid Sunbird was seen and some people saw African Golden Oriole and African Pied Hornbill from their rooms. The Casino Cycle Track at Kotu was our first stop and the birds came thick and fast here. White-billed Buffalo Weavers moved through in family groups and Ring-necked Parakeets were frequent overhead, Three Woodland Kingfishers were surprisingly our only ones of the trip and we had great views of Blue-breasted and Pied Kingfishers too, though a Malachite was less obliging. African Harrier-Hawk and Palm-nut Vulture were seen perched and waterbirds included Black-headed Heron, Long-tailed Cormorant, Western Reef Egret, Green Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, six White-faced Whistling Ducks and African Jacana. Senegal Coucal, Grey Woodpecker, Blue-bellied Roller and Green Wood-Hoopoe were common, while we also saw our first examples of Vinaceous and African Mourning Doves. The highlight here was possibly the superb views we had of a glaring Pearl-spotted Owlet in the Wattles along the track. Next to Kotu Creek and an excellent spell here as dusk was falling produced Striated, Grey and Black-headed Herons and a superb Black Egret performing its Umbrella Display. Three Senegal Thick-knee, Spur-winged Plover, three Common Greenshank, ten Common Sandpiper, Littleringed Plover, five Common Ringed Plover, two Common Redshank, three Whimbrel, six Blackwinged Stilts, Grey Plover and five Pied Kingfishers were also seen before darkness fell. Sunday 28 th November We set off at 0730 for Tujerang with the only notable species en route being a roadside Lizard Buzzard. The open savannah gave excellent birding four Black-crowned Tchagra noted as soon as we got out of the car along with the first of ten Ospreys. Twenty Purple Glossy Starlings flew over and a melee of feeding small birds included four Yellow-fronted Canaries, five Red-cheeked Cordon-Bleus and a Willow Warbler. Up to five Melodious Warblers were also noted here with two Whinchat, Woodchat Shrike, Tree Pipit, Pied Flycatcher, Common Nightingale and European Reed Warbler completing the selection of Palearctic migrants [the latter three heard only]. Rufous-crowned, Abyssinian and Blue-bellied Rollers hunted here and we saw three Fine-spotted and two Brownbacked Woodpeckers around the drinking area where the locals have suspended tubs of water among the branches of larger trees for the small birds. Senegal Eremomela were subsequently common, Lavendar Waxbill came to drink and we also saw two Levaillant s Cuckoo, three Chestnut-crowned

Sparrow-Weaver, Scarlet-chested, Splendid and Variable Sunbirds, Black-billed Wood-dove and Klass s Cuckoo in this productive area. Singing and Whistling Cisticolas adorned the bushes and perhaps one of the highlights included a stunning White-shouldered Black Tit seen very well. Two Tawny-flanked Prinia, two Little Weaver, three Striped Kingfisher, Fork-tailed Drongo, Copper Sunbird, Violet-backed Sunbird and perched views of both Pied-winged and Red-chested Swallows completed the haul of birds, with two Grey Kestrels and a Dark Chanting Goshawk representing the raptors. Moving down to the coast at nearby Tanji, we walked out onto the beach to examine the resting gull flocks. Five Kelp Gulls were picked out among the Lesser Black-backs and Grey-headed Gulls, while other species included two Slender-billed Gulls, thirty Caspian Terns, five Sandwich Terns and four Lesser Crested Terns. Five Pink-backed Pelicans were also noted with more views of Ospreys plus four Bar-tailed Godwits on the tideline. After lunch we spent a bit of time just North of the the river mouth exploring the open scrub. Four Swallow-tailed Bee-eaters gave superb views, in the same tree as a female African Golden Oriole, and about ten Yellow-throated Leaflove dashed through. The highlight though was unexpectedly flushing a Four-banded Sandgrouse from under a bush, and the bird was seen very well in flight. By now the heat was intense, so we headed back to the hotel and enjoyed a break before meeting at 1730 for a stroll around the gardens. Large numbers of Village Weavers were coming to bathe along with Greater Blue-eared Glossy Starlings and White-crowned Robin-chat. Hammerkop, three Bearded Barbet, Western Grey Plantain-eaters, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Woodchat Shrike and two Pearl-spotted Owlets were seen, though the rarest species noted was a European Griffon Vulture passing overhead with a large movement of Hooded. Monday 29 th November Lamin Ricefields was our first stop this morning and we enjoyed an excellent mornings birding here with a wide variety of waterbirds present. In the surrounding palms, both Grey and Fine-spotted Woodpeckers, three Blue-bellied Rollers, Ring-necked Parakeets, Senegal Parrots and a variety of mannikins, firefinches and weavers were present. The first pool hosted a fine Intermediate Egret next to a Great White for comparison, with a Black Egret performing its Umbrella feeding technique in the shallows and several Striated Herons stalking prey in the emergent vegetation. Two Squacco Herons also showed well, though a Little Bittern was less confiding and was not seen by everyone. Blackheaded Plover, six Wattled Plover and a large flock of Spur-winged Plover flew in, while other waders included more familiar Common, Green and Wood Sandpipers and Common Greenshank. Senegal Thick-knee, Pied Kingfisher, African Mourning Dove, African Harrier-Hawk and Grey Kestrel were also noted, with stunning views of an Osprey sunning itself on the walk back. Abuko Forest is always a great place and we weren t disappointed here today. New species included three Little Greenbul, a male Blackcap, Lanner Falcon, African Paradise Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Snowy-crowned Robin-chat, Blue-spotted Wood-dove and Fanti Saw-wing Swallow, with an overhead Yellow-billed Stork seen by some. A superb African Goshawk was perched near one of the shady pools and from the hide Black-headed Herons could be seen, as well as three superb Violet Turaco gliding across the canopy. Swallow-tailed Bee-eater and Pied-winged Swallow hawked for insects overhead and five Bearded Barbets were perched near the hide. The star bird here is the Western Bluebill, and we had excellent views of this shy bird of the forest floor, though it was perhaps eclipsed by the brilliant views of Green Turaco, which flew in and joined a group of its Violet cousins. After lunch at Lamin Lodge we spent a little bit of time exploring the area but the only new species was a showy Western Olivaceous Warbler. In the evening at Senegambia, a Shikra was observed bathing and our walk around the grounds produced Blackcap Babbler, Oriole Warbler, five Hammerkop, two Senegal Parrot, Redbellied Paradise Flycatcher, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Northern Black Flycatcher, another Western Olivaceous Warbler, our first Grey-backed Camaroptera and around five hundred Little Swifts. Tuesday 30 th November An early start saw us leave the hotel at 0630 for our trip to Farasuto Forest, the longest journey of the trip at about an hours drive. After having something to eat we began to bird along the entrance track before the heat of the sun got up, and we did superbly here. Two Violet-backed Sunbirds included a stunning male, and Splendid Sunbird, Northern Puffback, Fork-tailed Drongo, Vitelline Masked Weaver and Western Bonelli s Warbler were all in the same tree. Good fortune and excellent hearing from Modou then produced Grey-headed Bush-shrike and Sulphur-breasted Bush-shrike in quick succession, at one point almost in the same bush! Two really top birds to start the day and we felt confident of seeing more as we entered the reserve itself. A Levaillant s Cuckoo welcomed us and a female Common Redstart flitted along the track ahead, though a Lizard Buzzard perched on a nearby tree stole the show as it posed for photographs. At the pools, Giant Kingfisher was seen briefly and two juvenile White-backed Night-Herons were skulking down in some emergent bushes. Pied Kingfishers were everywhere here, and we also saw four Senegal Thick-knees and a watchful Crocodile! Entering

the thicker part of the forest, a Green-headed Sunbird gave close views and we also saw Pied Flycatcher, Oriole Warbler, Little Greenbul and Grey-backed Camaroptera. Green Crombec is a real Gambian rarity and we had decent views in the canopy above us, shortly followed by the commoner Northern Crombec in the adjacent scrub. On our way back to the vehcicle, a small party of Pin-tailed Whydah were feeding with Red-cheeked Cordon-Bleus by the side of the path. The Fantaba-Bantu track provided our next stop and despite the heat we saw some good birds here, particularly raptors. Four Bruce s Green Pigeons roosted in trees near the shelter with a Purple Glossy Starling feeding on the fruits of the same tree. Of course the highlight here is the accessible roosting Greyish eagle Owl, a recent colonist of The Gambia from East Africa, and we had brilliant views thanks to the Owl Doctor who took us to the relevant tree. Vitelline Masked Weaver, Brubru, Pied Flycatcher, Red-bellied paradise Flycatcher, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Brown-backed Woodpecker, Yellow White-eye and Yellow-fronted Canary were also noted in the surrounding scrub. Walking along the main track and scanning for raptors produced a highlight in the form of two adult Bataleur which cruised past, though we also saw two Wahlberg s Eagles, four Brown Snake-Eagles, Common Kestrel, African Harrier- Hawk and African Hawk-Eagle. Wednesday 1 st December Brufut Woods was our first destination today, though it wasn t at its best [perhaps not helped by the fact that the entrance track was so sandy that we couldn t drive all the way down]. Senegal Parrots were everywhere along the first part of the track with Melodious Warbler, Singing Cisticola, Tawnyflanked Prinia and Little Weaver also noted. A Pearl-spotted Owlet gave great views and caused the usual commotion with Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, Blackcap Babbler, Fork-tailed Drongo, African Golden Oriole and Violet-backed Sunbird all appearing to mob it. Two Klaas s Cuckoo eventually gave themselves up here too, and a little further along the path two roosting White-faced Scops Owls showed very well. Two African Pied Hornbills gave good views as they chased around in the treetops and a flock of Stone Partridge could be heard, though not seen, among the forest undergrowth. One of the trip highlights next was the amazing close views we had of a roosting Long-tailed Nightjar, found by the local guides a real treat indeed to get so close to this cryptic species. As we made our way to the local bar for a cold drink, parties of Brown Babbler were seen and from the bar, a drinking station attracted Black-billed and Blue-spotted Wood-doves, Lavendar Waxbill and Red-cheeked Cordon- Bleu. A nearby pool held Striated Heron and Malachite Kingfisher and Splendid and Variable Sunbirds before we moved out into the more open savannah. Birding was tough here in the heat of the day but we still added Siffling Cisticola and Mottled Spinetail and saw Grey Kestrel, Senegal Eremomela, Singing Cisticola, Vitelline Masked Weaver, Black-crowned Tchagra and Swallow-tailed Bee-eater. Finally on our way out we had brilliant views of a Long Crested Eagle perched on an Acacia by the side of the track. After a break back at the hotel we reconvened again at 1615 for a trip out to the Cape Point area. Starting at camillo corner we saw two African Darter, four Squacco Heron, Great White Egret, four Common Greenshank, Malachite Kingfisher, Pink-backed Pelican and ten Slenderbilled Gulls. The Bund Road was disappointing due to the high tide and we didn t see much other than large numbers of Grey-headed Gulls, Osprey, Common Sandpiper, Common Chiffchaff, Common Ringed Plover, Common Redshank, Bar-tailed Godwit, Little Egret, Western Reef Egret, Long-tailed Cormorant and Pink-backed Pelican. On the way back along the road Abyssinian Roller, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, two White Wagtails and three European Oystercatcher were seen. Finally we ended the day along the Old Cape Point Road were the roadside pools gave superb views of resting terns, gulls and waders. A Gull-billed Tern was our only one of the trip and around one hundred Caspian Terns provided a real spectacle. Thirty Ringed Plover, four Black-winged Stilts, Little Egret, twenty Common Greenshanks, Slender-billed Gull, Great White Egret and a Yellow Wagtail were also noted. A Whitefaced Scops Owl was on wires in Kotu on the way back. Thursday 2 nd December Today was our Birds and Breakfast trip to the Mangrove Swamps around Lamin Lodge. As we slipped silently through the narrow channels few birds were seen though it was an extremely tranquil way to start the day. Mouse-brown Sunbird is a real target here, and we managed to get three or four brief flight views. Once on dry land we spent some time exploring the adjacent ricefields. Senegal Parrot and Ring-necked Parakeet were very common here, and we added our first Lesser Blue-eared Glossy Starling, three Black-winged Kites and a male Marsh Harrier. A female Western Subalpine Warbler was seen very well despite being initially elusive and a Double-spurred Francolin was seen by one group member. White-billed Buffalo Weaver, Lizard Buzzard and Giant Kingfisher were other species seen here before we made our way back through the Mangroves to Lamin Lodge. After breakfast here, we spent some time exploring the adjacent area with the top bird being a superb Goliath Heron which gave really good views. A Zitting Cisticola was finally added to the list here and we also saw Tawny-

flanked Prinia, Northern Puffback, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird and Bluebellied Roller. Heading back to the hotel we enjoyed lunch at the Beach bar and took a rest before meeting our local guides for the last time and heading towards Kotu. The bridge was our first stop and large numbers of both Spur-winged and Wattled Plovers were present as well as the usual assortment of Palearctic waders. The cycle track was in the hot sun but we still had very good views of Greybacked Camaroptera and yet another glaring-eyed Pearl-spotted Owlet. Our first visit to the sewage ponds allowed us to get superb close views of feeding Black-winged Stilts, Wood, Green and Common Sandpipers and Cattle Egrets, and even our first Little Grebes of the week! African Jacana s gave by far their best views of the week in the emergent weeds. Finally we visited a small reed-fringed pool behind some ramshackle buildings and were surprised with the quality of the birding here! A Common Moorhen didn t inspire us much but a superb Purple Swamp Hen certainly did! White-faced Whistling Duck, Squacco Heron and Malachite Kingfisher were also present and perhaps the biggest surprise was the excellent views we had of two Black Crake to round off the day well. Friday 3 rd December A day to be forgotten as the heavy snowfall in the UK would have severe implications on our ability to catch our afternoon flight back to London Gatwick on time. The airport had only reopened just before the flight to Banjul was due to take off, so we knew we had at least a five hour delay. Nevertheless we had some time for a bit of birding around the hotel and seawatching off the beach was the most productive for adding new species with Pomarine and Arctic Skuas seen well and a nice Royal Tern passing among the odd Caspian Tern. Apart from that the highlight was possibly the large Fruit bats seen roosting at the back of one of the chalets! Having checked out of our rooms and starting the first part of our long wait in the hotel lobby, we eventually discovered the flight was delayed by a further two hours, so we wandered out for a very pleasant lunch at a local restaurant. Once at the airport, we had a further four hours to wait before our flight finally left at 2330 landing back at Gatwick at 0530 the following day. Systematic List Birds 1. Little Grebe 2.
