3 As if under a spell, the trees that come out of the ground, do so as twisted chairs. Parts of trunks and their branches form themselves into magical tables. Mushrooms from the Forest floor dance around mirrors. Water from the stream pours and hardens into glass - sometimes spikey and sometimes fixed with ripples, as though it were still flowing. When Ivy grows in the Forest, it grows in the tangled shape of a chandelier or cascades like a hanging sculpture. Pine cones swell into husks for lamps. And no one has ever seen such beautiful things before.

16 TORD BOONTJE COLLECTION Aptly enough, it was a chance meeting in a garden that began Porta Romana s collaboration with the wonderful Tord Boontje. His exquisite interpretations of natural motifs; creeping ivy, fluid branches and textured bark provided the perfect centrepieces for the Enchanted Forest collection. Tord remarks that the forest concept is a familiar landscape to us all, somewhere we can connect with and a place to let our imaginations run wild. So fallen trees and sunlight now become a pair of side tables a meeting place for woodland creatures perhaps. Sprawling ivy is tamed and twisted around a framework, projecting enchanting shadows of leaves and tendrils on to the nearest surface. And chairs that appear to be growing straight from tree roots delicately appear on the forest floor whimsically beautiful. There is a sense of romanticism and pure magic to Tord s designs. Combine this with Porta Romana s family of skilled artisan craftspeople and the result is something really quite special. Welcome to the Enchanted Forest. 16

Like a curtain of leaves suspended, the foliage grows down the wall, falling delicately and poetically. 19

A whimsical half log and a tripod design both use the versatility of cast composite to re-create the textures of real bark. Chamfered edged tops luxuriously decorated with a poured bronze composite are polished to a warm golden hue and the contrast between the top and its base in its blackened, more sombre finish, gives the impression of the day s last bit of sunshine leaving the forest floor. Taking his inspiration from the classic Windsor Chair and wanting to celebrate traditional British craftsmanship, Tord has created the Triwood chairs (see right). These decorative chairs made in sustainable Ash are in two designs, a Herringbone style or Twig variation. The simple finish not only serves to highlight the beauty of the woodgrain but keeps the chairs timeless; stand-out pieces which cannot be dated. 20
