1 Standard Operating Procedure for Ceramics Area Tyler School of Art Jan 19, 2009 The following guidelines determine the proper use and access to all Ceramics Area spaces. The spaces outlined in this policy include all spaces within suite 150 of the Tyler School of Art, with the exception of offices and graduate studios, and are listed as: Bulk Storage, Clay Machinery, Majors studio, Hand building, Wheel throwing, Glaze lab, Kiln Room 1, Kiln Room 2, and Outdoor kiln pad. A. Student or Resident Access a. Graduate Students/resident- Graduate students have 24- hour access to all Ceramics area spaces. b. Majors- All majors will receive 24- hour access to Majors studio, Hand building and Wheel throwing classrooms, kiln room 1 and kiln room 2. Access for majors is paired with their studio space. In the event that a major loses his/her studio space, he/she will also lose 24- hour access. Glaze lab access for majors is limited to posted, monitored hours as prescribed by the Ceramics Area faculty and technician. Access to Clay Machinery is limited to business hours, 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Majors do not have access to Bulk Storage or Glaze Lab Storage unless prescribed by Ceramics Area faculty or technician. Access to Kiln Room storage is limited to business hours, 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. c. Non- majors- Access for non- majors is limited to monitor hours posted. For all studios and labs, these hours will be limited from 8am to 10pm Monday through Friday and some weekend hours as determined by Ceramics Area faculty or technician. Non- majors access is limited to Hand building and Wheel throwing classrooms, Glaze labs and Kiln rooms B. Studio use and responsibility a. All students working in any Ceramics Area space are required to use safe and responsible studio practice. b. All students are required to clean up after themselves after each studio session. c. It is the responsibility of all instructors to insure that all workspaces are clean at the conclusion of each class. d. All waste clay must be disposed in CLAY RECYCLING barrels provided in every workspace. e. All glaze waste must be disposed in GLAZE WASTE barrels provided in the Glaze lab, including any rags used for clean up. f. All glaze tools or containers must be pre- rinsed in GLAZE WASTE containers provided in the Glaze lab. Any sponges used for glaze clean up should be pre- rinsed in the GLAZE WASTE container.

2 g. Absolutely NO unfired glaze may enter any space not designated for glaze. Designated glaze spaces include: i. Glaze lab ii. Glaze Corridor iii. Kiln Room 1 iv. Kiln Room 2 v. Outdoor kiln pad h. All spraying of glazes or paint must occur in the glaze lab spray booth i. All paints or flammable liquids must be stored in the flammable lockers provided. j. Absolutely NO eating or drinking in any Ceramics Area classroom, kiln room or lab. k. No smoking in any Ceramics Area space including the Outdoor Kiln pad. l. All Ceramics Area access doors are to be closed at all times.

The graduate GA may supervise clay mixing outside of the scheduled hours with prior coordination. All clay mixing must occur with supervision from Ceramics Area faculty, technician, or graduate GA. B. Studio use and responsibility a. All students working in any Ceramics Area space are required to use safe and responsible studio practice. b. All students are required to clean up after themselves after each studio session. c. It is the responsibility of all instructors to insure that all workspaces are clean at the conclusion of each class. d. No power woodworking tools are allowed in the studio, including circular saws, jigsaws, power miter box (chop saw), etc., with the exception of electric drills. This covers all areas of the ceramics studio including the majors studio and graduate studios. (This excludes the gas kiln room, where tools are provided.) Print Name Signature Date

5 BFA Ceramic Majors Studio Access Policy and Contract Tyler School of Art, Temple University January 20, 2009: amended January 13, This policy/contract explains and details access to, and maintenance of, an individual workspace in the Junior/Senior Majors Studio. Access to a space is a privilege not a right, and is contingent on your compliance with the following rules and regulations. a. You must be a BFA Ceramics Major taking Advanced Ceramics and maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA in studio art courses or at the discretion of the faculty. b. You must keep confidential all studio access passwords/entrance codes. c. You must commit to a minimum of two clean up days per semester in the majors studio plus the weekly cleanup schedule coordinated with Advanced Ceramics. d. You must comply with, and monitor non- major compliance of standard operation procedures for the clay storage, clay mixing, hand building, throwing, glaze mixing, electric and gas kiln rooms, and the outdoor kiln pad. Failure to comply with said procedures will result in restrictions on access to your space. e. The status of your individual workspace will be reviewed at midterm to assess appropriate utilization of said space. Inappropriate use includes not using the space or using the space in a way that violates studio usage policies. If inappropriate utilization has occurred, access to your space will be taken away. You will be put on probation for the remainder of the current semester and will have to reapply for another space the following semester. f. 6 Kiln Policy and Contract for Ceramics Area Tyler School of Art, Temple University January 20, 2009 This contract explains and details Tyler Ceramics procedure in reserving, firing, and maintenance of kilns, kiln rooms and kiln spaces. In addition to this contract, all students intending to fire any kiln must attend orientation and training by the Ceramics Area technician, faculty, or graduate assistant. Access and operation of a kiln is a privilege not a right, and is contingent upon your compliance with the following procedures: A. Reservations: a. Kilns will be reserved by completing and submitting a kiln reservation form. All forms and logs are provided by the graduate assistant at the kiln desk located in the gas kiln room. A valid reservation form must include the following: i. Name and contact info of operator and all other participants ii. Time and date of reservation iii. Kiln to be fired iv. Dates/Days of requested firing slot v. Firing temperature vi. Indication of bisque or glaze firing vii. Programmed/estimated time of firing cycle b. Kilns will be reserved for one of three firing schedules. i. Monday Wednesday ii. Wednesday Friday iii. Friday Monday c. Bisque, or all other firings requiring a 4 day cycle can only be reserved for the Friday- Monday firing slot. d. Reservations are prioritized by seniority within the Ceramics Area structure: i. Faculty or class firings/studio bisque ii. Graduate Students/Resident iii. Ceramics majors iv. Authorized specialty or non- major firings B. Standard Operating Procedures: a. Kilns must be loaded between 12pm and 3pm at the beginning of the firing cycle and unloaded between 8 am and 11am at the end of the firing cycle. b. All gas kiln firings will include an accurate, properly filled kiln log. c. All programmable kiln firings will include documentation of program and length of cycle.

7 d. All cones and kiln furniture, including shelves and posts, will be checked out from the Ceramics Area Technician for loading and returned to the Ceramics Area Technician after unloading. All kiln furniture must be returned free of glaze residue. e. Cone packs must be included in each firing. Each cone pack must consist of a minimum three cones intended to determine under-, over-, or accurate firing range. The minimum amount of cone packs per kiln is as follows: i. One pack for manual electric kilns to determine shut- off ii. Two packs for programmable electric kilns, placed front and rear. iii. Three packs for gas firings 40 cubic feet or larger and placed front top/bottom and rear. f. Kilns will be thoroughly vacuumed after every firing cycle. g. All damage will be reported at the beginning and/or the end of each firing cycle. h. Completed kiln logs must be submitted for review. i. In the event of misfire, the follow information should be provided: i. Documentation of apparent issue, result or misfire ii. Copy of kiln log or program iii. All cone packs C. Kilns operators will follow safe and proper kiln operation as instructed by the Ceramics Area faculty, technician, or graduate assistant. D. Studio bisques are operated by the Graduate Assistant and will be loaded on Mondays. Work may be submitted for studio bisque, but is only loaded at the discretion of the Graduate Assistant. Any student entering work into studio bisque must be present to load their work and to assist the Graduate Assistant. E. No undergraduate firings may exceed Cone 6, unless otherwise approved in writing by faculty. F. Graduate or resident firings exceeding cone 6 must include submitted justification or research. By signing this policy below, I agree to its terms as a contract. I agree that the establishment and continuation of kiln privileges is determined by the adherence to the above policies. I agree that any violation of one or more of these policies can be reviewed and can ultimately lead to the suspension of all kiln privileges. I agree that all kiln privileges are at the discretion of the Ceramics Area faculty or technician. Print Name Signature Date

8 Glaze Lab Policies and Procedures for Ceramics Area Tyler School of Art, Temple University January 20, 2009 This policy/contract explains and details access to, and maintenance of, the Glaze Lab. Access to a space is a privilege not a right, and is contingent on your compliance with the following rules and regulations. a. Hours of access are Monday- Friday 6 am to 10 pm, Sunday 12pm to 10pm. b. All glazing and mixing of glaze materials must be done within the glaze lab. c. No glaze materials may be put down the sink. This includes residual glaze in brushes and mixing containers. Any tools or containers containing glaze must be rinsed in the provided barrel, adjacent to the sink, prior to washing. There are university policies and federal laws that prohibit these types of materials from being washed down the sink. Our facility is being monitored for compliance. d. It is advisable to have a respirator when mixing dry ceramic materials. Ceramic supply shops sell respirators designed for use with ceramic materials. Likewise, when working with heavy metals, it is advisable to wear latex examination gloves or a suitable substitute. e. When mixing dry materials, locate the mixing container in front of the dust collectors to minimize your exposure to dust. The dust collectors and spray booth are powered at al times. There is no need to turn them on. f. All tools provided in the glaze lab must remain in the glaze lab. g. All tools, containers, and counter tops must be cleaned after use and returned to their proper location. h. If you are ever uncertain about the safety or use of a material, please seek assistance before using kit. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are provided in the glaze lab for reference. i. You may not store anything in the glaze lab except for work in progress that has had glaze or other unfired ceramics treatments applied.
