2 The auxiliary natural stone industry sector one The auxiliary natural stone sector is made up of a range of equipment, tools and products that enable stone not only to be extracted from quarries, but also subsequently processed. This industry can be divided into the following subsectors: Extraction and processing machinery Abrasives Anchors Diamond-tipped tools Chemical products The Spanish sector overview two The importance of the auxiliary industry is closely linked to the Spanish natural stone sector, which is at the forefront of the global industry due to its natural resources and its high level of processing. This sector has spawned a strong auxiliary industry which provides the technical and material resources to carry out the different tasks, from extraction and processing through to the final installation of the natural stone. In Spain, the stone extraction and processing companies are located in the areas with the largest deposits: Galicia, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia, Madrid and Andalusia. This means that the companies dedicated to the auxiliary industry tend to be located in the same regions, although to a significantly lesser degree. 2

Other Total *million Source: Fdp No Sales* Jobs By subsector, the most important area is the manufacture of extraction and processing machinery, which accounts for 68 companies and sales of 235 million, providing direct employment to 1,318 people. In terms of sales and employment, machinery manufacturing is followed by tool and anchor manufacturing, while the production of chemical products and abrasives has the lowest volumes. Technological evolution (R&D+i) To adapt to the needs of the natural stone sector and to meet national and international demand, the auxiliary industry has undergone a profound transformation, readjusting its strategies to optimize productivity and to increase quality while also seeking innovative technological solutions that are economically viable. Today Spain has natural stone companies with an international outlook and presence, which manufacture technologically advanced products and that offer high quality and excellent finishes. 3

4 Integration with other sectors The auxiliary industry is closely linked to that of natural stone per se. The quality of its products dictates the demand from other sectors in the economy, such as construction (interior finishes, façades, roofing), which accounts for 70% of the sector s sales, while the rest is oriented towards other uses, such as funerary masonry and interior design.
