19 My basic technique for Raku firing, once the work has been Bisque Fired I will smooth surfaces and edges with sand paper, brush and wash to remove all dust. Once dry the work is masked/wax or latex resisted if required. Coats of glaze are than applied by dipping, pouring or brushing. The next process is to fire in one of my Raku Kilns to a temperature of around deg C. Once glazes have melted and take on the look of a hot toffee-apple the work is removed from the kiln and the fantastic effects are achieved by reduction, the work is than allowed to cool before cleaning with wire wool, washed and dried. 31 What is a Wishing Stone? Many cultures across the world have believed that natural objects that have holes pierced through them have magical properties. The native Indians of North America believed that stones shells, wood had been entered by the spirits and possessed sacred elements, they would fashion these items into beads and decorative jewellery to protect them in this world. Even in Britain strong believes revolve around many stone monoliths that can be found around the country, The Tor Stones in southern England, huge holed stones that stand on the moors are said to relieve and even cure medical ailments by climbing through the holes. LARGE ORB in flames after firing We have hand crafted our pottery wishing stones to give pleasure both for sight and to touch, each stone whether its Raku or Stoneware it will be unique in colour and finish. We believe that the wishes are sealed in when the stone is fired and only released when the true owner is found and connects with the magic of the stone. Some just say the wish is the beauty of believing.

62 Film Beta vessels for Pinewood Under much secrecy I worked with Pinewood Studios on the making of the Alien prequel Prometheus. I was approached to make the vessels that held the alien DNA. The flasks were coiled carved and Raku fired. These were the beta versions of the more simpler ones used in the final edit. In the kiln Fired Flask

63 Schools workshops and teaching I am often asked do I teach - well the answer is yes! As well as running workshops for Raku Firing I also run workshops in Hand building, these are done from the Phoenix Studio in Towersey, Oxon. I will also do one to one teaching from my studio in Bledlow Ridge and will go to groups to demonstrate and teach. Above is work done by the Lewknor School in Oxon. This was a two part activity for the whole school consisting of making the pots and decorating and then Raku firing them on the school playground.
