Christof Stephenson History of Graphic Design Final Project Essay- Due: 5/17/2018 Over the weekend i went to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum to go look at some of the artwork they had on display. It isn't the first time I have been to this museum, I went about a year ago, but the different pieces we're nice to look at. It was a fun time seeing as i also went with a friend who wanted to be there. The museum is actually quite small being only 3 floors, so even if you traveled around slowly you wouldn't be in there for too long. The building from the outside is quite beautiful and gives off the museum vibe. I wasn't to interested in the smaller things like the cafe and the courtyard but even from just looking at them from a distance one can tell that the area was beautiful. I wasn't able to go into the interactive wallpaper portion this time but from past experience seeing what you have drawn up on the wall is an experience. There was also a greenhouse like part towards the back end of the museum which was nice to be in if anything but what I really went there for was the art pieces.
This design piece that I found while walking around was called Sidewall, and this was produced from the looks of it in the beginning of the Arts and Crafts movement. Since this is a sidewall this was put inside of someone s home they followed the idea at the time to be surrounded by something nice. The sidewall has leaf forms around it going with the norm of the arts and crafts movement of using nature to create a simplicity in their work. Since the arts and crafts movement followed the illuminated manuscript style of bordering their work the images around the sidewall border around the inner image. The second design piece I found is the PRATT HOUSE MODEL ROCKING CHAIR, made in The chair is dated to be during the art nouveau art movement but the design of the chair symbolizes works found in the arts and crafts movement. Like Gustav Stickley during the
arts and crafts movement use to craft furniture with simplistic designs and the idea of crafting it without the need of mass production, this chair resembles the works of stickley. Asian elements can be identified in the square ebony pegs of the chair showing an influence from the art nouveau movement as well. Another art design piece I saw was PRINT, DESIGN FOR GROTESQUE ORNAMENT, CA. made in 1680 by Jean Bérain. The art piece is dated pre industrial revolution, and looks to have illuminated manuscript inspiration. The piece doesn t have any type on it but the composition of the art resembles the style illustrators used in the images they drew in the old bibles. The piece is medium with etching and engraving on white laid paper. The
engravings of the border have curves and accents. The image within the border is reminisce of the images that were drawn based on the stories the illustrator had to draw from. My fourth piece that I looked at was TEXTILE (FRANCE), made in the 18TH CENTURY. The textile in my opinion is an example of arts and crafts movement. The piece is a pattern of flowers. Some flowers have circles around them and they are in a shape of flower petals while the middle is of a nature. he repeating bouquets on this printed French cotton echo the so-called potato flower design frequently used at Moustiers, and can be seen on the nearby tureen with yellow decoration. This piece show the apperantion for nature that the arts and crafts movement try to promote down the line.
The fifth design object would be an URN, created in CA manufactured by Olérys and Laugier's pottery factory. The urn is medium and made tin-glazed earthenware, pottery made of clay clay fired ton a porous state that can be made impervious to liquids by the use of a glaze. The urn reminds me of art nouveau style, with the very heavy emphanzienation of nature that covers the entirety of the urn. The urn has delicate hints of blue to represent the sky but doesn t over saturate the piece to give it that simple design. The second to last design art piece I saw was One Thousand and One Initial Letters illuminated by Owen Jones in Created during the arts and crafts movement, this art piece shows aspects that obviously places it in the same movement. The book, which is dedicated to the Prince of Wales, consists of 27 plates produced by chromolithography. Chromolithography is is a unique method for making multi-colour prints. The book obviously follows the influence of
illuminated manuscripts like the works of william morris during the same time. The letters follow the concept of making illuminated letters and does so for 27 letters. The final piece I looked at before leaving the museum was BOUND PRINT made in FRANCE. The piece seems to be influenced by the art nouveau movement. The piece has curved lines and a lot of detail on the organic shapes. The print s art design does seem a lot more detailed in the human drawing than other works of art during the art nouveau movement but it still follows its favor to nature. The piece also have some aspect to arts and craft with the border around the human drawing and the pose he is taking.
Overall, the visit to the museum was an exhilarating experience. It is nice to see that works of the old is still influencing the works of new, and see what art periods influenced others. I feel glad to have such a experience and feel enlightened.
