6 What else goes on? Cortex Graduate Network A growing graduate network exists within Air Division and QinetiQ - a variety of young people from different universities beginning and progressing their careers. QinetiQ s graduate community supports new starters with anything from advice about work to how to find housing in the local area. Cortex is QinetiQ s new starter network. It aims to help you transition efficiently and productively into the QinetiQ environment. It is run by recent graduates from different areas of the company, so can easily help you to learn about other divisions and the kind of work other graduates are involved in. Regular events and activities include climbing, skiing, charity walks, quizzes and trips to Go Ape. Cortex also promotes development opportunities, including technical lectures from more senior members of the business, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) events, and guided tours of the many specialist facilities around the business. The Air Division graduate community would be delighted to welcome you as a new graduate, giving you the unique opportunity to organise and shape the future for other new starters! Extra-curricular activities MOD Boscombe Down and Farnborough have active flying clubs where you can learn to fly powered aircraft or gliders through other local affiliations. Both sites also support branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society running lecture and visit programmes. All of the QinetiQ sites have gym facilities and most run an active sports programme, e.g. football, hockey, netball, and there are numerous other groups for activities such as cycling
7 People Who Know How... to provide 21st century flight test training The Empire Test Pilots School (ETPS) trains flight test professionals from around the world. QinetiQ and its predecessor organisations have been delivering this training for 70 years. Research, design, advice, development, testing and training QinetiQ is at the centre of aviation. People Who Know How Name: James Innes Role: Flight Physics Engineer Studied: Aviation Engineering I started my journey with QinetiQ in September I entered as a Graduate Flight Physics Engineer, at MOD Boscombe Down, following the completion of my degree in Aviation Engineering at Brunel University. Having completed an informative and eyeopening Induction fortnight I settled down into my first placement working within the Airbus A400M Atlas Programme. I was fortunate to be involved with the team over the period in which the RAF received their first-of-type. This unique opportunity gave me an insight into the processes involved in bringing a new aircraft into service with the RAF, as well as allowing me to develop my organisational skills I had first developed at University. After my first three months with A400M, the opportunity arose to stay with the programme and move into a more technical role organising the first set of trials with the aircraft. Exposure to this activity so early on in my career was invaluable and it was the flexibility of the Air Division Graduate Scheme which allowed me to pursue the opportunity. Following a productive and enjoyable 5 ½ months with A400M I was given the opportunity to move into another area of the business which had interested me from a very early stage. Learning how a commercial company operates is something I found I had very little exposure to at University, so the opportunity to move into a Commercial Management Placement was one that I was very eager to explore. People Who Know How... to deliver space travel Our ion engines are 10 times more efficient than conventional rockets, making the once impossible, possible like a new generation of leaner, faster, cheaper communications satellites, propelling a spacecraft at seven times the speed of a rifle bullet at the boundary of space, or enabling ambitious missions to the inner and outer planets
8 Name: Gareth Edwards Name: Will Twiney Role: Weapons Integration Engineer Role: Aircrew Systems Graduate Studied: Aerospace Systems Engineeringg Studied: Psychology I started working at QinetiQ in September 2014 as a Weapons Integration Engineer, after completing after completing a BEng in Aerospace Systems Engineering at Coventry University. I joined the Air Division Graduate Scheme in September 2014, after graduating with a BSc in Psychology from Plymouth University. My first four months were in my home placement, Weapons Integration, working on Tornado. During this placement my focus was writing temporary clearance advice for release of a new weapon variant. This provided me with an ideal chance to integrate into air division and start writing reports to an industry standard. After a brief spell in Trials Engineering I began my second major placement; this was working with Weapons Division on Salisbury Plain Training Area. During this time I tested various types of equipment (Target Location, Counter IED, Force People Who Know How... to keep helicopter pilots cooler We conducted experiments, many involving front line personnel, to appraise current equipment, training and procedures. This enabled the MOD to procure improved thermal cooling equipment for use in theatre, and provided recommendations for a supplementary oxygen strategy for high altitude helicopter operations. Protection etc.) in order to help write the requirements for future Army procurement. This allowed me to gain experience in a customer facing role as well as work with another area of the company. Currently I am back with Weapons Integration working on Tornado where I will shortly support a flight trial. This was an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to flight trials within the department. I joined the Air Division Graduate Scheme in September 2014, after graduating with a BSc in Psychology from Plymouth University. As part of the Aircrew Systems Integration Team I have gained a variety of experience:- working on the initial stages of a programme to convert RAF Merlin to a maritime capable Royal Navy aircraft which involved producing a plan for how the safety evaluation would be conducted; evaluating the Human Factors hazards associated with two proposals for an Airborne Surveillance and Control radar for the Merlin; providing Human Factors recommendations for expanding the lower operating temperature envelope for the Merlin; gaining experience of lighting assessments within the Night Vision Systems Test House. I have also had a business placement supporting a programme management team. Outside of work I participated in the QinetiQ Airmanship Scheme which has been a great experience and learning to fly a glider has helped to develop my knowledge and understanding of aviation. People Who Know How... to make the longest UAV flight QinetiQ s Zephyr UAV beat the official world record time for an unmanned flight (30 hrs, 24 mins) by flying for 54 hours. With a wingspan of up to 18 mts but weighing just 30 kg, it flies on solar power by day and at night by batteries recharged using solar power
