4 Foreword and Acknowledgments This manual was developed to provide guidelines for defining, planning, and building appropriate laboratory facilities for sensory evaluation testing. Discussions of key elements required for a properly designed laboratory, as well as case studies and layouts of existing facilities, are included. Under the editorship of co-chairmen Jean Eggert and Katherine Zook, this publication represents the combined efforts of Task Force Group E of ASTM Committee E-18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products. Among the many contributing members were Jean Bloomquist, Geralyn Basinski, Carol Clark, Joyce Schultz Deupree, Lori Digiacomo, Betty Dunbar, Andy Dravnieks, Jackie Erhardt, Carol Gardze, Marianne Gillette, Bob Hootman, Beth Prevost, Margaret Savoca, Lisa Schreck, Mary Sheppard, Debbie Moe Smith, Herbert Stone, Fred Sullivan, and Katy Word. Special recognition is also given to those companies supporting this undertaking through permission to include layouts or photographs of their sensory evaluation laboratories. These credits belong to: Avon Products, Inc.; Firmenich, Inc.; Hilltop Research Company; IIT Research Institute and The Institute of Olfactory Science; International Flavors and Fragrances; Kraft, Inc.; McCormick and Company, Inc.; Ralston Purina Company; Reynolds Tobacco Company; Ross Laboratories and Company, Inc.; Tragon Corporation; and The Quaker Oats Company.
