Human factors and technical design how to design safer systems case studies Implications of technical design for communication Communication with UAV Implications of Communication with UAV Implication could mean Verwicklung = involvement or complication, Folgerung = conclusion, Auswirkung = effect
Basic question : UAV s can they be designed, manufactured, certified, maintained and operated error free? Complication of communication with UAV Actually means How to operate it error free!!
Why such a complicated introduction? Because communication is complicated, if you are unfamiliar in using the correct techniques!! Watzlawick: You cannot NOT communicate!! What did he mean? Bodylanguage (gestures and mimics) Question to audience: So that does not apply to operators of UAV s - correct? WRONG!
Watzlawick: I can only understand what I said, after your answer! Question to audience: So that does not apply to operators of UAV s - as they (UAV s) dont talk to me (the operator) - correct? WRONG AGAIN!
Handling = technical communication with hands! SENDING DATA Feeling = technical communication with hands and body! RECEIVING DATA Speaking is technical communication with words AND sound SENDING DATA Listening is technical communication with words AND sound RECEIVING DATA Signaling is technical communication with signs SENDING DATA Seeing is technical communication with signs RECEIVING DATA
An example of LISTENING! 40 sec audio
From Rotor Wing Magazine March 2009 Author Chris Baur
It doesn t matter wether you are flying solo or with 16 crewmembers, with 300 passengers, a lone CEO or a football team. Your aircraft might weigh 1,6 to or 350 to. Your pilots career may span 3 decades or 3 month. The threats we face as pilots do not discriminate, forgive or reward based on such criteria. What does matter is the professionalism we bring to our work (as pilots)!
Video 1 RC Model Professional An example of professional handling
Video 2 real airplane An example of professional handling
How to be professional?
An example of non professional handling Video 3 RC Model awareness of the weather, the sink rate, the time delay etc Video 4 real airplane awareness of the wind and my speed, flight control tactile feeling and my motoric system etc What was non professional?
Me and other people! Video 5 It could be other people causing problems Video 6 It could be myself causing problems Video 7 It could be the designer forgot the emergency handle or an alternative way of handling
And because more than 70% of all aviation accidents are caused by the pilots The legislator requires all pilots to be trained in addition in CRM - Crew Resource Management Human error and reliability, Error chain Error prevention and detection Company safety culture, SOPs, Organisational factors Stress, Stress management, Workload Management Fatigue and Vigilance Information acquisition and processing Situational Awareness Decision making Communication and co-ordination in- & outside the cockpit Leadership Team behaviour, Synergy Philosophy of the use of automation
Remember, 40 years of CRM did NOT achieve error free pilots!! Human error or professionalism is at home in all areas where human beings work. Whatever our work is, design or manufacturing, certification or operation, we have two ways to use our brain: With consciousness and awareness or working without brain - frontal lobe control = unaware non conscious.
The future It is a question of how was I trained to use my brain. If you look at todays society in whatever country, in politics, in economy, in technology, in religion, in education, in training etc, do you think the majority of the people were trained to use their brain in a controlled way or not?
Technology will solve the problem Video 8 the unbreakable airplane It is not technology by itself, but our COGNITIVE way of using it that makes technology (UAV s) safe!!
