Others view STP just as one of numerous public policies. Still, some wouldn t care what it is (for them, STP is perhaps a weird combination of three dry words). However, STP matters for all. Or does it? In this course, we will find out what it is, why it matters for/to whom, and how it works. Course Evaluation Class Discussion (15%) Response Paper (RP) (40%) Other Assignments (30%) For productive class discussions, you are expected to offer your wellreasoned comments relevant to the assigned class readings rather than rambling on tidbits of superficial personal observations. Every other week, you will submit a one single-spaced page response paper on the previous two weeks readings. This paper assignment is intended to help (force?) you to follow up with the course readings on time. Avoid merely summarizing the content; instead, focus on interesting or challenging arguments, thoughts needing more discussion, or ideas related to the readings. (* Those submitting response papers earlier than the deadline will receive a bonus point.) There will be various types of assignments including: policy brief writing, interviews, presentations, pop-up quizzes, etc. More details will follow. Peer Review/Editing (15%) You will have a chance to review/edit your classmate s written work as well as have your work reviewed/edited by your classmate. This will provide excellent experience to go over your writing with a critical eye. * The components and the portion of grades may change slightly depending on the progress of the course. 2 Students may use mobile digital devices such as a smart phone at the risk of disrupting lectures and discussions and at the cost of lowering significantly their own participation grades. Plagiarism ( taking someone else s work or ideas and passing them off as one s own, Oxford English Dictionary) will not be tolerated. Note that simple paraphrasing does not exempt you from a charge of plagiarism. Students should follow a professional style guide (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, or APA) when citing other work.
