It s Time For Your Organization To Grow Up -Learn About OPM3 & Other Maturity Models Murad Karimi PMP, PfMP, OPM3, Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Kaizen Certified
Introducing the Speaker Murad Karimi 20 Years of Project Management and PMO Experience Implemented International PMOs and PMO Hubs from Ground Zero PMI PMP, PfMP & OPM3 Certified Assessed PMOs in the US, UK & Switzerland Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Lean, TQM & Kaizen Certified Implemented Continuous Improvement Roadmaps on a Global Scale
Pulse of the Audience PMO Managers? Project Managers? Portfolio Managers? Process Experts? PMO Assessors? CMMI OPM3 Others
Why do we need Maturity? Every organization wants to achieve Excellence. Building just a PMO is no longer sufficient. PMO needs to build: Strong Capabilities Steady Maturity Growth Continuous Improvement Plan This is NOT possible without a structured evidence-based approach Why? - Because of a risk called Unconscious Bias
Risks of Unconscious Bias Unconscious Bias Our brain sorts through millions bits of information at any moment but can only consciously absorb about 40 Our brain is evolved to produce shortcuts to quickly determine what is perceived as preferable The brain hardwires unconscious shortcuts between certain data points and certain decisions before we can consciously make a decision based on objective data Dangers of Unconscious Bias Lead to Capability Blind Spots Lead to Microinequities (certain individuals and skillsets are singled out)
An Old Tradition Assessment and Benchmarking is an old tradition in Quality Management and has been in practice in: Medical Engineering Manufacturing They have been in practice since 50 s and introduced by Quality Leaders: Philip Crosby Edwards Deming Armand Feigenbaum Kaoru Ishikawa Joseph Juran
Maturity Assessment Before a dietitian puts a patient on a diet plan for weight loss program, what would a dietitian do? Take the weight of the patient and record the patient s weight on a diet chart 3-Step Process 1. Assessing and benchmarking the current AS-IS state 2. Develop a diet plan (or an Improvement Roadmap for TO- BE state) 3. Continuously monitor and control (thru revaluation / re-benchmarking)
Maturity Assessment WHY? Without assessing and benchmarking the current AS-IS state, how would a PMO be able to proposed TO-BE state with continuous improvement? How would a PMO know exactly which capabilities to improve on? How would a PMO build a Short-term (90-day plan) & a Long-term (5-year plan)? How would a PMO be able to prioritize its Improvement Roadmap? How would a PMO successfully raise its maturity bar?
Types of Maturity Models Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Project Management Maturity Model (PMMM) Kerzner Project Management Maturity Model (KPMMM) Project Management Maturity Model - Darci Prado (MMGP) Portfolio, Programme and Project Management Maturity Model (P3M3) Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3 )
CMMI Developed by Carnegie Mellon University and Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CMM was developed by SEI in 1986 to assist Department of Defense (DOD) Due to confusion of multiple improvement iterations, SEI retired CMM and replaced it with CMMI (Batten, 2008) Has a five-level maturity framework Source: CMMI Institute (
PMMM The Project Management Maturity Model (PMMM) is a formal tool developed by PM Solutions and used to measure an organization's project management maturity. The PMMM follows the Carnegie Mellon University and Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CMMI Model's five evolutionary maturity levels, and examines maturity development across ten knowledge areas in the PMI s PMBOK. Source: PM Solutions (
KPMMM The Kerzner Project Management Maturity Model (KPMMM) presents itself as an extension of the CMMI model, focused on the field of project management According to Rabechini (2005), KPMMM is made up of CMMI Model's five levels of maturity combined with the area structure of PMBOK. Source: Kerzner PM Maturity Assessment - International Institute for Learning (IIL)
MMGP The MMGP model was created to assist the project management team of the Management Development Institute, INDG. According to Prado (2006), there is a consensus on the part of project management professionals that a maturity model should consider the following areas: Strategy, Processes, People and Technology. MMGP was developed in six dimensions linked to the CMMI Model's five levels of maturity. Source: Modelo Prado MMGP - Instituto de Desenvolvimento Gerencial
P3M3 Developed by OGC (UK) P3M3 incorporates cross pollination model approach using CMMI model with its five-level maturity framework while integrating across portfolio, program and project management maturity models P3M3 has 3 Domains 5 Levels 7 Process Perspectives 32 Key Process Areas (KPA) Source: P3M3 Model - Office of Government Commerce (OGC)
