2 Why CTE? Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Confucius Can you imagine how nice it would be to have a career that makes you look forward to getting up and going to work? That s why it is so important that you take some time now to explore career paths that might interest you in the future. Educators have long known that participation in career and technical education programs prepares students for college and careers, produces gains in academic achievement, and gives students a head start on their postsecondary education. But did you know that completion of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program adds value to your high school diploma by providing nationally recognized industry certifications, college credits, and opportunities to earn scholarships? The CTE Secondary Guide has been organized into 16 unique career cluster areas. In each area, you can find classes that can help you discover the career that works for you. Our school district wants to provide you with a program that can connect you directly to your interests and goals, while preparing you for success in postsecondary education, advanced training, and, of course, your future career. 3 CTE - Education that works! Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for more than just a good job. CTE programs introduce students to educational pathways that allow them to explore their interests and careers while still in high school. All CTE programs have a natural emphasis on core academic subjects within a real-life, career context. For example, in an Architectural Drafting course, students apply knowledge and skills leaned in geometry and physics. In a course, students will use skills leaned in algebra and chemistry. CTE students develop both technical and employability skills related to the career area of study. Students who complete at least one CTE course, and who take at least one industry certification exam, have significantly higher GPA s and higher attendance rates than comparable students who don t take advantage of these resources. CTE is designed to meet the needs of students, business and industry, school districts, and community colleges/universities. CTE promotes literacy and academic advancement; provides job training and employer partnerships, and improves the employability potential of each student who successfully completes a program. CTE Career Pathways is a structured curriculum of CTE and academic courses along with rigorous electives, and require strong counseling and planning that begins in the middle school years, which can prepare students for high-tech, high-challenge, and high-demand occupations. Career Pathways programs will typically have postsecondary articulation agreements, based on courses completed and/or industry certifications earned while in high school. This connection from secondary to postsecondary education allows students to earn college credits or to meet performance standards that may be awarded as part of a postsecondary program certification, a state licensure, or a college degree. igh School igh Tech student Dakota ull participated in a summer internship and has now been hired by that same company. Career & Technical Student Organizations encourage their members to develop leadership and employability skills. Learn more about CTSO s on the pages ahead. 3
