5 VTA method Visual Tree Assessment The VTA method is a widely accepted procedure for tree inspection. VTA has been recognized in courts of law worldwide. VTA interprets the body language of trees and helps to recognize warning signals. Furthermore it helps to detect and calibrate defects as well as to assess failure criterias. 1. Recognition of symptoms Body language of trees, repair work, structure of barks, structure of crowns and foliation, fungi and their body language, features of the location 2. Failure validation and surveying Sound velocity measurement (IML Micro Hammer Hammer) Drilling resistance measurement (IML-RESI System) Bending, fracture and compression strength measurement (Fractometer) Analysis of annual rings (IML Measuring Table) 3. 6 Tree inspection as a part of road safety Inspection of street, park and forest trees Our measuring instruments were developed to detect and locate internal damage in trees and timber structures, that is often hard to detect with visual inspection. The VTA method (Visual Tree Assessment) helps to see damages and defects based on the external anatomy characteristics of a tree (see the body language of trees book) and will guarantee an effective use of our instruments. This method (VTA) helps arborists and consultants to detect risks and threats in early stages and necessary action can be taken.

8 Playground equipment inspection Safety, stability and regular inspections Due to accidents that have injured playing children, the playground equipment inspection is getting more attention these days. Damage to impregnated wood is difficult to see from the outside which can have serious consequences. More and more accidents happen on playgrounds. Sometimes unfortunately with drastic or even fatal results. Defects and decayed playground equipment are often the reason for such disasters. Basically the owner of the playground is likely to be liable if something happens.

9 Playground equipment inspection Safety & hazards The stability of playgrounds are not guaranteed anymore and there are hazards for playing kids. The IML-RESI System has been invented to prevent accidents through more accurate inspection. Potential hazards and damage can be avoided using information that is precise and reliable. Although requirements regulating the quality of construction and use help to improve safety standards, periodic maintanance and repair works has to been done. These inspections are especially important in the areas where metal and wood is connected or where there is ground contact.

11 Measuring method Drilling resistance measurement The system of the IML-RESI is based on the measurement of the drilling resistance. The instruments are available in different series and drilling depths. The IML-RESI has to be pressed like a drill on the wood that is to be inspected. A drilling needle with a diameter of 1,5mm with a 3,0 mm cutting tip is inserted into the wood under constant drive. While drilling, the resistance is measured as a function of the drilling depth of the needle. The data is printed and/or stored on a scale of 1:1 simultaneously. Because of the sawdust remaining in the bore hole and re-closing it fully, the wood (tree) suffers very little wounding while drilling.

13 Measurement result The graph profile recording on a waxpaper strip The waxpaper strip is water proof and records the measuring curve at a scale of 1:1. The resistance against the drilling needle is measured and automatically recorded on the strip. Due to the different mechanical resistance within a tree the graph profile represents the difference between early wood and late wood. The graph profiles shows finer and thicker lines.
