14 TOPICS 2018 Broadly defined topics developed in dialogue with stakeholders: a. Artificial organs, tissues, cells and sub-cell structures (15 M ) b. Time (13 M ) c. Living technologies (20 M ) d. Socially interactive technologies (15 M ) e. Disruptive micro-energy and storage technologies (15 M ) f. 15 Artificial organs, tissues, cells and sub-cellular structures Proposals should aim at engineering biological, artificial or hybrid sub-cellular systems (e.g., synapses, organelles, vesicles), highly specific cell assemblies (including microbial), tissues, organs or multi-organ systems. - Exploit recent advances in integrative biology (including modelling and simulation) and bioengineering - Combine the growing understanding of genome, proteome, metabolome and cell behaviour with strategies for the engineering and use of biological and hybrid functional constructs Possible long-term research targets include: - synthetic cell building - organ reproduction, replacement, control or repair - high-throughput organ- and body-on-chip technologies for the development of personalised treatment, drugs or vaccines -. => engineer hybrids Ethical issues should be properly addressed Project size 4-7 M, total budget 15 M 14

16 Time This is about new technological possibilities inspired by notions of time, not seen as a given and singular background against which things unfold, but rather as a resource that can be experienced and used in different ways. Possible research areas proposals could address include: - technologies for subjective time awareness (and its neural basis) and distortion - the role of time in processes like aging, healing, learning or evolution and how this can be influenced - understanding non-linear temporality in complex systems New ways to represent, modulate, duplicate or experience and use time could come from technologies in, for instance: - extreme electronics/photonics - data-streams analytics - time aware artificial intelligence - virtual and augmented reality - bio-engineering or neuroprosthetics Project size 4-5 M, total budget 13 M 15

17 Living technologies Proposals should develop new functional biological, technological or hybrid artefacts with features of living systems such as physical autonomy, growth, interaction and enaction, adaptation and evolution. This could involve, for example: - hybrid materials and systems with programmable features of shape, structure, functionality and evolvability - possibly starting from naturally existing complexes - research on multi-level mathematics and complexity of living systems or the boundaries/characteristics of life could be a part of the work proposed Proposals could use relevant results from evolutionary biology, ethology, micro-, plant- and animal biology, synthetic biology, systems biology and /or chemical biology Ethical issues should be addressed Project size 4-5 M, total budget 20 M 16

18 Socially interactive technologies This addresses technologies to support deeper social interaction between people in groups which range in size from pairs to crowds This new socially interactive media should facilitate building trust and understanding, social integration, engagement, collaboration, learning, creativity, entertainment, education and wellbeing Proposals should include novel combinations of social sciences and humanities with neuroscience, engineering and computing to develop new experimental tools and paradigms - These tools could take into account, for example, context, culture, emotion, and factors of embodiment and cognition Ethical issues and the gender dimension should be addressed Project size 4-5 M, total budget 15 M 17

19 Disruptive micro-energy and storage technologies Proposals should address next generation technologies for local (close to where needed) energy generation, capture or storage This proactive covers: - Technologies for micro-energy or nano-scale energy generation, transfer, dissipation and conversion - bio-inspired energy technologies - the use of soft or intelligent materials - new types of batteries Smart integration of novel energy sources within hybrid/distributed energy systems can be addressed. Sustainability and environmental impact issues should be addressed Scalability should also be addressed. Project size 4-7 M, total budget 15 M 18

20 Topological matter This topic addresses new materials exploiting interactions between quantum effects and topology Topological insulators already studied - possible applications in spintronics Other material properties can be addressed - applications in photonics, mechanics (eg elasticity, acoustics), superconductivity and plasmas are possible examples Proposals should go beyond pure physics and mathematics - Prototypes should be built, tested and benchmarked Methodology should include an engineering approach for using the quantum effects of wave-matter interactions in novel components Project size 4-5 M, total budget 10 M 19

28 PROJECT EXAMPLE A-LEAF Artificial photosynthesis for fuels and chemicals The project goal To create an artificial photosynthesis device that uses sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into fuels and other chemicals, mimicking the action of plant leaves. How? Theoretical and experimental studies of CO 2 /water reactions at surfaces to make fuels Optimisation of results and transfer to photo-electrochemical cells Scaling up results in a photoelectrocatalytic device Rare and/or expensive materials will be avoided Impact on Science photovoltaic materials and surface chemistry Technology photoelectrocatalytic devices for solar energy capture Society potential for a carbon-neutral fuel cycle using conventional hydrocarbon fuels.

29 PROJECT EXAMPLE MAGENTA The project goal Magnetic nanoparticle based liquid energy materials for thermoelectric devices Develop novel thermoelectric materials based on ionic ferrofluids for use in devices to convert waste heat produced by many aspects of daily life into more useful forms of energy (e.g. electrical). How? Experiments and theory used to understand thermoelectric properties of various ionic ferrofluids Materials optimised to maximise the thermoelectric effect Construction of prototype thermoelectric cells and testing in realistic conditions Impact on Science novel thermoelectric materials Technology new devices for energy harvesting in "self powered" devices Society more efficient use of energy resources Power generating cell (MAGENTA / CEA) 28

30 PROJECT EXAMPLE BRAINCOM The project goal High-density cortical implants for cognitive neuroscience and rehabilitation of speech using brain-computer interfaces Develop a new generation of very large-scale neuroprosthetic cortical devices based on novel materials and technologies to further basic understanding of cortical speech networks and facilitate rehabilitation in disabled patients using new brain-computer paradigms. How? Develop large-area cortical and intra-cortical neural interfaces for recording and stimulation Develop H/W (ASICs) to handle very large number of signal channels Use animal studies to understand link between surface and intra-cortical signals Study distributed brain circuits of speech before and after a stroke Clinical testing to develop decoding strategies for speech based on cortical activity Flexible electrodes (BRAINCOM) Impact on Science information coding in neural signals Technology flexible neural electrodes using new materials Society better rehabilitation for patients after a stroke 29
