1 Applied Electromagnetics M (Prof. A. Cristofolini) The course explores some aspects of interest in the field of electromagnetism of electrical engineering and provides students with the fundamentals of the major analytical and numerical calculation methods. At the end of the course, students can understand the main problems in electromagnetism and to properly apply the static and quasistatic approximation; students are able to apply analytical and numerical tools for the study and the design of electromagnetic devices. Applied Measurements for Power Systems M (Prof. L. Peretto) The course provides the background of the theory of signals, of the measurement uncertainty arising in instrumentation as well as of the basic architecture of electronic measurement instrumentation used in electric power systems. At the end of the course students are able to evaluate the measurement uncertainty propagating through the measurement algorithms in complex measurement systems and to express it according to the new method proposed by the new GUM. Moreover they are also able to select sensors used in electric systems, according to the measurement functions, to condition their output signals, to set up properly the data acquisition system and to analyze the gathered data both in the time and frequency domain. Electrical Asset Management M (Prof. G. Montanari) At the end of the course students own a knowledge of the management techniques of electrical assets in the framework of the issues related to the processes of management and maintenance of electric power systems, starting with technical- economical and power quality aspects; they are capable of developing then, in particular, diagnostic methodologies based on health index evaluation, reliability estimates and life modelling, the concepts of data mining and quality systems. Electric Drives M (Prof. D. Casadei) The aim of the course is to provide a general approach to an understanding of the performance and control of electric machines and drives. After the course, the students are able to model and simulate dc motor drives, brushless motor drives and induction motor drives having clear knowledge of the physical aspects of electric machines behaviour when operating as motors and generators as well as the mathematical models of electric machines valid for steady- state and transient analysis.
2 Electric Drives for Industrial Applications M (Prof. L. Zarri) At the end of the course the students are able to understand the main technical problems concerning the modelling of modern high- performance AC drives and power converters. The students are able to identify suitable control techniques for induction and PM machines and for front- end converters used as an interface to the grid, in a variety of applications, such as automation and wind energy generation. Electric Power Systems and Smart Grids M (Prof. C.A. Nucci) The course provides the basics for understanding the main aspects of modern power systems/smart grids analysis and operation in steady state and transient/dynamic conditions. At the end of the course students are able to understand the main technical problems relevant to transmission and distribution of electric energy, and can solve them with particular reference to load flow, short circuit calculation, stability, frequency control, voltage control and renewable sources diffusion in the electric network and smart grids. High Voltage Engineering M (Prof. G. Mazzanti) The Course provides a deeper insight into the technological and engineering solutions adopted in power systems in the presence of high voltage and high electric fields. At the end of the course students are able to understand how lightning and switching surges affect high voltage systems, and possess the knowledge of the main features of the devices used in the high voltage field: overhead and cable lines; insulators; surge arresters; switchgears; DC, AC and impulse high voltage sources; voltage dividers. The students are also getting the basics of insulation coordination and testing. Particular emphasis is put on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems, both from the line and from the converter station viewpoint. Plasma Engineering M (Prof. C.A. Borghi) At the end of the course the students are able to understand the main aspects of the plasma generation and its behaviour at different operating conditions. Few plasma technologies are considered: plasma treatment of surfaces (plasma etching, deposition, implantation and sputtering), electro- plasma- dynamic and magneto- plasma- dynamic interactions and their applications, the main aspects of the thermonuclear fusion with magnetic confinement, and bio- medic plasma techniques. Therefore the students are able to operate on advanced technologies used in industry and in research field.
3 Predictive maintenance for electrical infrastructures M (Prof. A. Cavallini) At the end of the course, students are able to choose the most appropriate diagnostic techniques for a specific apparatus, and are able to start using the techniques by themselves, interpreting measurement results. Their expertise is based on the knowledge that they acquire on (a) the typical failure modes of high and medium voltage equipment; (b) the diagnostic techniques most commonly used to identify local defects (weak points in the insulation systems) and bulk degradation; emphasis will be given to the physical basis of these techniques and their limitations; (c) the basic information regarding the use of artificial intelligence techniques in diagnosis and (d) the qualification of insulation systems as a prerequisite to ensure proper reliability levels. Power Electronic Circuits M (Prof. G. Grandi) At the end of the course students own the knowledge of the principles of modern power electronics: power diodes, controlled switches. They also acquire the knowledge of the following items: commutation transients, reverse recovery, and losses; how the pulsewidth modulation works, including harmonic analysis of voltage and currents. The students are further capable of calculating and improving the conversion efficiency. Knowledge of DC/DC converters, voltage and current transfer ratio, multi- level converters; DC/AC converters, single- phase, three- phase and multi- phase; The space vector analysis of multiphase AC systems; Space vector modulation of three phase inverters are also elements of the cultural skill that the students acquire at the end of the course Automatic control and system theory M (Prof. Claudio Melchiorri) At the end of the course students own the capability of handling the fundamental tools for the study and analysis of multivariable dynamic systems and their structural properties (controllability, observability). Moreover, they acquire competence on modern control schemes such as: Multivariable control, Optimal Control, Adaptive Control, Robust Control, Non linear Control. Business excellence and project managing M (Prof. Gaetanino Costantino D Emma) At the end of the course the students attain knowledge about the fundamentals of business excellence, about the impact of business excellence on project management, knowledge and practical experience about project management; case studies of environmental and quality control issues in the design and manufacturing in modern industry; knowledge about the fundamentals of environmental and
4 quality management; knowledge about eco design and manufacturing planning; knowledge about quality control fundamentals and process metrics.
