2016 Global Findings Welcoming the Revolution: Pressure Rises, Optimism Prevails Creativity & Problem-Solving Key for Future Workforce: Future worker is changing. Executives are seeking problem solvers (56%) and creativity (), and an expected impact of the 4th industrial revolution is that some categories of skilled workers will be in high demand. Citizens are embracing the start-up ethos and value flexible (89%) and remote () work. Only a few countries feel their education system is ready to address future skills, with informed citizens in countries like India (81%), China (78%) and Indonesia (76%) most confident. Minds and Machines Working Together: Business executives expect the digital revolution will make the workplace safer (43%) and create higher-value roles for workers (48%). Few fear any negative impact on employment as a result of the digital revolution; only 17% of business executives and 15% of citizens fear potential negative impact. Executives in the US, India, China or Germany anticipate a positive outcome in their country, while Japanese, French or Swedish executives are more skeptical. The ROI on Collaboration is Increasing: Jumping from in 2014, 77% of executives say revenue and profit generated by collaborative innovation activities have yielded an increase in financial results. 68% of executives declare their firm is open to risk-sharing associated with innovation, including revenue streams or losses that could be generated through collaborative initiatives Emerging Markets Fearlessly Embrace Innovation: Business executives from emerging markets are feeling more optimistic and more empowered by the 4th industrial revolution than their peers in developing economies. Fewer leaders in emerging markets are also reporting difficulty coming up with radical and disruptive ideas. Asian markets are amongst the most excited and curious, with Informed Citizens in developed markets feeling the least in control. A Call for Greater Government Support: Executives and citizens alike are calling for public authorities to play a more supportive role in innovation. While few citizens (12%) believe their government is the top driver of innovation in their country, more (30%) think it should be. 57% say their country s regulations are not supportive of innovative companies, although emerging markets are more positive in their assessment. Most executives agree that data & privacy regulations are preventing more radical innovation by businesses, while citizens () are willing to share access to their data if it leads to better service. The Energy Sector is Ripe for Disruption: Globally, 61% of citizens believe that the energy sector can benefit greatly from new innovation approaches and answer the many challenges it faces. However, energy companies are less confident about the prospect of the 4th industrial revolution compared to other industries (50% confidence vs. 60%). 5

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CANADA

Canada, pragmatic optimists When questioned around the impacts of the digital revolution and automation, both Business Executives and Informed Public in Canada are positive about the potential impacts on employment and jobs more specifically. Automation will create a safer work place and higher value jobs. 70% of Canadian executives agree the digital revolution will create jobs (vs. 48% globally). While Canadian Informed citizens are excited (69% vs. 65% globally) and curious (77% vs. 72% globally) about the idea of entering a fourth industrial revolution, Canadian business executives share more contrasted and practical views. They believe in the power of innovation but display less excitement towards the 4 th industrial revolution than their peers in many emerging markets (48% vs. 61% globally). This is a trait synonymous with the majority of developed economies. Canadian executives feel less empowered (51% vs. 62% globally) and less in-control (52% vs. 59% globally) about the idea of entering a 4 th industrial revolution. Indeed, more than last year they report experiencing greater challenges in their effort to innovate successfully. Internal inertia (70% vs. 60% globally), incapacity for risk taking (67% vs. 58% globally), sufficient investment (69% vs. 60% globally) and the lack of talent (67% vs. 58% globally), are challenges faced by more and more Canadian businesses. 88% of Business Executives in Canada are mindful of the risks Digital Darwinism poses to businesses - becoming obsolete as technology is evolving faster than they can adapt (vs. 81% globally). More than in other countries, and more than last year, they are embracing the challenge and getting ready. 7

A great ambition, grounded in realism Whilst incremental innovation remains the more dominant innovation strategy globally, Canadian companies are one of the markets least focused on it (55% vs. 63% globally). They share a strategic intention to favour more breakthrough innovation, but have come to acknowledge being radical and disruptive is a growing challenge (73% vs. 53% in 2014). More than many other countries globally, Canadian executives see a greater contribution to company performance through the development of new business models (43% vs. 34% globally) - however "defining the right business model to support new ideas and make them profitable" is a challenge to innovate efficiently for 75% (vs. globally). Executives attribute more importance to the analysis of big data in 2015, with 75% agreeing that using big data and analytics is an important tool for success (up from 40% in 2014). We also see a growth in the proportion of Canadian companies increasing their ability to analyse big data sets 76% (vs. 50% in 2014). However, Canadian executives have also come to realise the most challenging best practice to implement is turning data and analytics into an actionable decision-making tool (46% vs. 40% globally). More than other countries, Canadian executives are looking for new talents who will be able to demonstrate the ability to navigate uncertainty and an entrepreneurial spirit as well as interpersonal skills and the ability to fit easily within the company culture. 8

Sharing the responsibility of Canada s future and success Globally we see a call for greater government support for innovation. This is true in Canada with 7% of citizens believing government is driving innovation now and 28% believing government should be driving innovation the most. While a majority (59%) state the regulations in Canada today are supportive of innovative companies, only 1 in 2 Canadian informed citizens believe their government is making innovation a priority (52%). The majority agree that regulations around privacy and data protection are preventing businesses from both launching and adopting more radical / transformative innovations (70%/ 69%). More than in any other countries, there is a higher expectation in universities and research labs to also be driving innovation, versus other markets surveyed. 31% of the informed public feel they are driving innovation the most today (vs.16% globally), and this aligns with their expectations. 36% believe they should be driving innovation further (vs.17% globally). A lack of talent is reported as being a barrier to efficient innovation by 67% of executives (vs. 58% globally). It s felt more strongly in Canada, that it is the responsibility of the private sector to retool and reskill the workforce of today (55% vs. 40% globally). However, while of executives believe the education system in Canada is adapted to fulfil the private sectors' demand for new talent and skills, citizens are more sceptical of it (47%) and only half of them believe that the current education system is preparing the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow. 65% of the informed public believe that the energy sector would benefit from new innovative approaches (vs. 61% globally) with believing the top impact will significantly reduce the carbon footprint (v.40% globally). 9 9
