3 DESMA NEWS Raising the bar of industrial safety COME AND MEET DESMA AT A+A DÜSSELDORF Many DESMA customers are using their DESMA machinery to produce safety shoes and work footwear so it comes as no surprise that DESMA is an important exhibitor at the A+A Fair in Düsseldorf October DESMA technology is known and preferred worldwide for the production of highest-quality safety footwear. The technical advantages of a DESMA are especially suited to production of heavy footwear, and WHAT IS PPE? PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT The market for personal protective equipment is considered especially dynamic: it currently boasts a volume of some EUR 18 billion worldwide. PPE is equipment which will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. The A+A has always been a showplace for producers and customers of PPE and all that is necessary for a safe, secure and healthy workplace. A lot has happened since the very first A+A in 1954: 25 years ago the European Union introduced its first framework directive on industrial safety. Since then the EU has continually played a pioneering role with its high standards in protecting employees from health and safety hazards. Since 2008, the number of fatal occupational accidents has dropped by nearly 25%. At the same time, there has been a 10% reduction in the number of employees in the EU with at least one work-related health problem or with a problem that has been aggravated by their work situation. This year A+A will feature over 1,900 exhibitors and expects over 65,000 visitors. DESMA staff are taking the opportunity to meet old friends and make new contacts at the DESMA booth. At Steitz Secura s sites in Kirchheimbolanden and Pirmasens the specialist knowledge, creativity and passion of 200 employees combines with modern technology to ensure the highest quality for Steitz Secura safety and occupational footwear. Steitz Secura footwear not only protects the foot but also the entire body of the wearer. Steitz has always been especially interested in all health aspects; we know that an illfitting shoe can damage joints and general health. The two companies, working together, are using the internet of things in the quest for the Holy Grail of shoe-making: the individuallymade shoe. Multi Section Injection (MSI) means that different degrees of hardness can be achieved in different zones of the sole shot to shot. In combination with a 3D-printed insert sole, cushioning individually fitted to the wearer, an MSI sole will provide the wearer with the absolute maximum in comfort and stability. The DESMA/Steitz Secura concept includes the Fitstation. The customer s foot is scanned and the data gained either stored in the cloud, or sent directly to the DESMA machinery. The final user gets the perfectly fitting shoe, explains Freese. And the manufacturer can achieve batch size 1, with all that entails: individual configuration of sole qualities and colours. RC: It s a very intensive exchange, starting with understanding what the customer really wants.

RC: The customer comes with ideas, gives us information about materials to be used, production facilities and demands and then our designers create an exact description of the product.

Then a computer-generated image is made like a photo, which gives the customer an impression of what the shoe or boot will look like.

We re excited about the new Customer Service Center, which can test prototypes for all mould designs. Both the CSC and the Innovation Center are superbly equipped with all machinery necessary.

I ve managed the Mouldmaking department for 20 years and every project is fascinating, but the HAIX Fire Eagle seemed special.

And with no mould RC: There s no shoe! Yes, the Mouldshop is a very important part of the DESMA story. DT: How do you work together with customers? RC: It s a very intensive exchange, starting with understanding what the customer really wants. There are 19 of us in the Mouldmaking team, altogether 100s of years of experience in design, engraving and project management. DT: Does the customer come to you with an idea? RC: The customer comes with ideas, gives us information about materials to be used, production facilities and demands and then our designers create an exact description of the product. That s not as easy as it sounds! Together, we think about brand identity, function and the emotional reaction to the product. Then a computer-generated image is made like a photo, which gives the customer an impression of what the shoe or boot will look like. After that, a 3D simulation is prepared, which is even more realistic. DT: Can the customer change their mind? RC: Yes, and they often do! That s part of the process. We re excited about the new Customer Service Center, which can test prototypes for all mould designs. Both the CSC and the Innovation Center are superbly equipped with all machinery necessary. DT: Tell us about the co-operation with HAIX RC: Well, HAIX is an exciting company to work with. They had a very clear, very challenging concept. I ve managed the Mouldmaking department for 20 years and every project is fascinating, but the HAIX Fire Eagle seemed special. We were always thinking about the men and women who put their lives on the line when they put on their boots. We realized that reducing the weight of their equipment would be a tremendous boon to them. Recently watching the dreadful fire in London, I could only think how it would feel to be climbing those stairs through the smoke wearing heavy boots. So that project felt not only like a task to be fulfilled to the customer s complete satisfaction, like every other, but also an honour. DT: What else would you like to tell our readers? RC: That I am proud of my team, their motivation and the extremely high standard of equipment they work with the high automation CNC milling, for instance. In Los Angeles, New York, Hamburg, Mexico City, Moscow, Hongkong and Tokyo firefighters trust their HAIX footwear to protect them from whatever hazards they must face. The 1,100-strong HAIX staff were involved in producing over 1,000,000 pairs of shoes in 2015, which are being worn in over 100 countries. Since 1992, when he took over his parents shoe making business, CEO Ewald Haimerl s vision has been the global presence of HAIX footwear, constantly developing not only new product lines but also pushing the frontiers of safety and protection for those who choose HAIX boots. Andreas Himmelreich, Head of development at HAIX knew that the quest for the lightest firefighter s boot ever was tough. Obviously, the boot must fulfil all safety criteria including the Sandbath test buried in 250 C sand for 10 minutes, the inside temperature must not exceed 42 C. Combining that with lightweight? HAIX took on the challenge. Their answer? The HAIX Fire Eagle, the lightest firefighter boot ever, coming in at just 1.000g per boot (compared to the regular 2.5kg boots). This light weight achieved thanks in no small part to the heart of the shoe, the sole, which HAIX developed to- gether with partner DESMA. The boot is a runaway success, confirms Gerd Müller, Fire Chief at the US Airbase Spangdahlem. It s brilliantly light: boots we can wear comfortably all day on the base. Müller s Wild 50s wore the boots at the legendary Fire Fighter Combat Challenges, winning the team and relay championships in Montgomery Alabama. Everyone thought it was impossible, Rainer Clausing, Head of DESMA mouldmaking reflects. But we were up for HAIX challenge. The directly-injected sole was the be-all and end-all of the project. Jörg Zilz, head of the new DESMA CSC has spent the last months gathering feedback from colleagues and customers about just what should find a place in the new DESMA CSC the Customer Service Center. We re looking forward to showing customers around our own showroom, comments Zilz, who has been with DESMA for over 20 years. We ve heard that customers would appreciate seeing new showroom equipment. We re also going to be making sample shoes. It means a much closer and joined-up customer relationship I m really looking forward to it! The first to get a peep at the new CSC may be the technicians who have been invited to the Techniker Tage in the autumn.
