4 3 Physiological Testing Centre The quest for greater comfort What sells? Comfort! Comfort is a priority in the development of functional textiles for military, outdoor, work and wellness. The enduser expects a perfect balance of function, design and performance. As a pioneer in the field of clothing physiology we have been intensively dealing with the interaction between textiles and human physiology for decades. Our experts benefit directly from the knowledge gained in interdisciplinary research projects at the Hohenstein Institutes and so always have their finger on the pulse of time. Our key competences in the field of physiology Quantitative measurement & assessment of the comfort of textiles and clothing as well as the climatic comfort of all types of seats. Assessment of the effects of the pattern construction and the design on wear comfort. Creation of construction guidelines for physiologically optimised textiles and clothing systems. Know How Made in Hohenstein The Hohenstein Skin Model simulates the heat and moisture loss of the skin. It delivers specific thermophysiological parameters e.g. thermal insulation, breathability, sweat transport, drying time, etc. Apart from textiles (e.g. fabric and knitwear) fleeces and foams and all kinds of combinations can be tested. Physiological comfort is objectively measurable Apart from the thermophysiology and the fit, the skin sensory properties of a textile product are an important factor for whether it is found to be comfortable by the wearer. The relevant parameters, like for example bending stiffness or surface hairiness, can be objectively determined and evaluated with special test apparatus developed by us. From this, comfort ratings can be calculated. These comfort ratings can be rewarded in the form of the Hohenstein Quality Label on the product. Manikin testing The thermal manikins Charlie and Charlene enable differentiated statements about the thermal insulation and the physiological function of ready made garments of clothing, bedding and sleeping bags. With the sweating manikin Newton thermal and also moisture transport properties of garments can be tested, respecting size and fit as well as ventilation, caused by the movement of the wearer. In this way the product properties can be optimally adjusted to the relevant area of use. Comfort testing of shoe/stocking systems To investigate the thermal comfort of shoe/stocking systems, the particular wearing conditions for the human foot must be taken into account. The inhouse developed measurement system simulates walking movements to observe the influence of ventilation in the shoe.
