4 EDOARDO MARIA FARINA PAGE 4 OTHER INTERESTS Electronics and information technologies. Play tennis (agonistic player), climbing (member of Italian Alpin Club in the recent past), cycling. Interested in History, especially contemporary (taken part in various contests during secondary school). RESEARCH ACTIVITIES September 2015 Present I am currently involved in the New Small Wheel project for the Phase I upgrade of the ATLAS Muon spectrometer. In particular Pavia is one of the production sites chosen for the construction of the Micromegas detectors. My activities are mainly devoted to the development of the software needed both to automatize the production of the modules, both to the control the panel quality. I am responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Pavia MySql database where the information of all the modules built will be stored. I am currently developing the interface to insert and manage entries in the database. I am, moreover, involved in the SUSY analysis, aiming to find evidences of physics signals not expected by the SM. Last, I am actively contributing to the Geant4 simulation of the ATLAS experiment. In details, I am contributing to the upgrade of the simulation infrastructure including class implementation, code migration, configuration, and optimization. Thanks to this activity I have been qualified as ATLAS author. February 2015 September 2015 Cern Technical Student Programme 2015 Project: Characterization of a large area Micromegas prototype for the ATLAS New Small Wheel upgrade and preliminary aging studies During this period I continued my collaboration with the ATLAS Muon Community. My task was to collaborate to the construction and to the characterization of the performance of the first large area prototype of Micromegas detector. I continued also my previous activity of DAQ software development. On parallel I started a study aiming to minor the performance of the Micromegas detector after a long-term irradiation with ionizing particles. This job allowed me to consolidate my C++ and PHP knowledge and to deepen several technical aspects of the construction of the module. I contributed significantly to the performance studies carried out to verify the feasibility of the entire New Small Wheel project. June 2014 September 2014 CERN Summer Student Programme 2014 Project: Development of a graphical interface for the configuration of the MicroMegas DAQ System During this period I joined the ATLAS Muon Community in the development of the MicroMegas detectors for the next ATLAS upgrade (2019). My task was to develop a new version of the data acquisition (DAQ) software for the certification of the MicroMegas prototypes built at CERN. The software should allow a user-friendly configuration of the system and should provide new features as requested by the community. This job allowed me to deepen my knowledge of C++ and XML languages of programming and of ROOT framework (used for the development of software s GUI and for the data analysis). Moreover I deepened the functioning of the MicroMegas detectors and of the electronics used (APV), the construction process and the functioning of a data acquisition system (SRS DAQ system). I took part to the MicroMegas test-beam at PS facility (7-27 august 2014). April 2013 September 2013 Bachelor s Thesis: Simulation of the CNAO beam line for the treatment of uveal melanomas Supervisor: Adele Rimoldi (University of Pavia) The aim of the project was studying the feasibility of the treatment of the uveal melanomas at CNAO facility (Pavia) with protons beams. The CNAO beamline has been completely simulated as well as the features of the beam using the Geant4 tool. Very detailed eye geometry has been implemented and some optimizations of the existing beamline have been suggested to allow this kind of treatments. A comparative study of the FWHM of the beam using different tool of simulation (Geant4, FLUKA) has been provided to test the reliability of the simulation. Several modalities of target scanning have been implemented. Finally, the possibility of importing DICOM geometry from CT (computerized tomography) has been provided. PAVIA, 01/02/2017
