PRESIDENT S PERSPECTIVE Robert Cadigan Robert Cadigan - Noia President & CEO President s Perspective Newfoundland & Labrador is Canada s leader in economic growth in According to a report by the Conference Board of Canada, the capital of the province will climb to 5 per cent growth this year. This was achieved due to the strength of our offshore oil industry and major construction projects. And the future continues to look bright for our province. Of course, Noia started off the year with great news at our AGM, delivered by Ed Martin, President & CEO of Nalcor Energy of the discovery of three newly defined basins in the Labrador Sea. In addition to the new basins, a fourth previously established basin was discovered to be much larger than originally understood. The redefined Hawke basin and the new Henley, Chidley and Holton basins named after nearby place names in Labrador more than double the basin area of offshore Labrador. This news just confirmed what we knew all along that the prospectivity of our region is tremendous and remains under explored. Our industry has been abuzz with news of Statoil Canada s third find in the Flemish Pass. The Bay du Nord find, with an estimated reserve of million barrels is believed to be of similar scale as the Johan Sverdrup find off Norway. Statoil s ambition of becoming a producer on our shores is one step closer to reality. Statoil s partner in the Flemish Pass acreage, Husky Energy also brought welcome news with the announcement of plans to move ahead with its wellhead platform option for the White Rose Extension Project. Husky along with partners Suncor Energy and Nalcor Energy and the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador announced on October 10th the $2.5-billion White Rose Extension Project will fully develop the West White Rose satellite field using a wellhead platform (WHP). Construction of the platform s concrete base will be done at a new graving dock to be built at Argentia. The WHP development option offers improved oil recovery, more oil production, longer field life, more in-province construction and an infrastructure legacy at Argentia. While all of this news is incredible and certainly an enviable position to be in, Noia s focus and mission is always to improve the opportunities available to our membership and to facilitate participation in the industry. Therefore, we must always be forward looking. This year, we have undertaken the Industry Sustainability & Growth Strategy (ISGS). This strategy is meant to inform and influence future public policy regarding the strategic and long-term development of the local oil & gas industry for future decades of investment attraction and production in Newfoundland & Labrador. The ISGS will be a framework featuring local, regional, national and international delivery models that build local value-added capacity; maximize local supply chain opportunities; sustains long-term investment; and fosters the creation and growth of a globally competitive supply and service industry. Noia member participation will be crucial to the success of the project and members will be asked for their input to help inform this strategy. 4 Noia News

FEATURE STORY Year in Review Husky Energy s wellhead platform for the White Rose Extension Project. Image courtesy of Husky Energy. 2013: Year in review It was the biggest news of the year for Newfoundland and Labrador s offshore oil sector: Statoil Canada pegged the resource estimate of its third discovery in the Flemish Pass at million barrels of recoverable, light sweet crude. Statoil called the Bay du Nord discovery alone the company s largest find outside Norway and the 12th largest discovery globally since This brings us one step closer to becoming a producing operator in the area, said Tim Dodson, Executive Vice-President of Statoil Exploration, in a Sept. 26 news release. With only a few wells drilled in a large licensed area, totalling about 8,500 square kilometres, more work is required. This will involve new seismic as well as additional exploration and appraisal drilling to confirm these estimates before the partnership can decide on an optimal development solution in this frontier basin. Combined with discoveries at Harpoon this past summer and Mizzen in 2009, Statoil and partner Husky Energy have opened a new basin in the deepwater frontier 500 kilometres northeast of St. John s. Bay du Nord brings the total resource estimate to date for the deepwater frontier to million barrels of oil. Noia News 9

Statoil said the Flemish Pass Basin has the potential to become a core producing area post This isn t just a big discovery by Newfoundland standards. This is a fairly large discovery by international standards, said Bob Cadigan, President & CEO of Noia, in the Sept. 27 Telegram. It ll put the eyes of the world on us, from a prospectivity standpoint. Statoil first announced the Bay du Nord discovery in August, but didn t quantify the resource potential until a sidetrack well completed in September confirmed it as high-impact. The company also says the crude is light oil of 34 API, which is similar to Hibernia crude. API refers to the American Petroleum Institute, which sets the standard for measuring the density of petroleum. In June, the company announced a discovery at its Harpoon well. It is still under evaluation and no resource estimate has been issued, but the company has described the crude there as high-quality oil that is lighter than the crude encountered at Mizzen. Statoil has estimated the Mizzen resource potential at million barrels of oil. The discoveries are also good news for exploration in the deeper waters beyond the oil-producing Jeanne d Arc Basin that is home to the Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose and Hebron oilfields. All three Flemish Pass discoveries are in 1,100 metres of water. White Rose The sun was shining in Placentia Oct. 10, as Husky Energy announced that the $2.5-billion development of the White Rose Extension Project (WREP) will utilize a wellhead platform to be built at Argentia. The platform s concrete base will be built at new Argentia graving dock, complete with gates that have a 25-year design life. Husky, which signed a lease agreement with the Argentia Management Authority, expects work on the graving dock to begin as soon as it has environmental permits in hand. On Oct. 16, Husky announced that Nova Scotia-based Dexter Construction Co. Ltd. was awarded the contract to build the graving dock. The wellhead platform will fully develop 115 million barrels of oil the West White Rose satellite, which has been producing oil from a well-pair pilot program since September For more than a year, Husky had been considering two development options for the West White Rose: a wellhead platform or a subsea tieback. Using a wellhead platform for this project signals an innovative way of developing smaller satellite developments in Newfoundland and Labrador, said provincial Natural Resources Derrick Dalley, in a release. This option demonstrates prudent resource development by increasing recoverable oil and extending the field s life. 10 Noia News

COVER STORY Year in Review The platform will be capable of drilling wells, but will not have storage or processing facilities. Instead, oil will be pumped aboard the SeaRose production ship, where it will be processed, stored and offloaded to tankers that transport the crude to market. In-province work on the wellhead platform includes project and procurement management; engineering and construction of the graving dock, gates, the concrete gravity structure and the accommodations modules; and the fabrication of the flare boom, heli-deck, and lifeboat stations. First oil is scheduled in In June, Husky received regulatory approval for the $1.2-billion South White Rose subsea tieback development. The development is targeting 33 million barrels of oil. Of this, 24 million barrels comes from South White Rose and nine million barrels are contained in a portion of the main South Avalon Pool known as the Terrace. Installation of subsea equipment was expected to continue until the end of October, weather permitting. Husky expects first gas at South White Rose during the fourth quarter of this year. Once additional subsea equipment is installed next summer, first oil is anticipated by the end of In late October, Husky received approval to develop the North Amethyst Hibernia formation. The Hibernia formation will be drilled from the existing North Amethyst drill centre and Husky has said production of an estimated 8 million barrels of light crude could start immediately. In 2009, Husky announced it had discovered more oil deep in the Hibernia formation, which lies beneath the producing Ben Nevis/Avalon formation at White Rose. North Amethyst, which was developed via the first subsea tieback in the province s offshore, started production in May On the exploration front, Husky encountered no commercial hydrocarbons at the Federation K-87 well during 22 days of drilling that started June 20, according to a Sept. 26 news release. In August, Husky also spudded a well at its Northwest White Rose prospect. Noia News 11

COVER STORY Year in Review construction of the platform s helideck was awarded to C&W Offshore in Mount Pearl. By year-end, ExxonMobil expects to award contracts for the in-province construction of the flare boom and two lifeboat stations. Hibernia Development of the $1.7-billion Hibernia Southern Extension (HSE) continued with installation of the subsea equipment, flowlines and jumpers during the third quarter of this year. This work is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter, using Technip Canada s Deep Pioneer multi-purpose support ship. Statoil has drilled three discovery wells in the Flemish Pass. Image courtesy of Statoil Canada. Hebron Work continues on the $14-billion Hebron project to develop 700 million barrels of oil by In August, the concrete gravity base structure (GBS) reached 27 metres in height with the completion of slip-forming operations and tri-cell walls, which began last summer at the Bull Arm drydock. Next, comes the completion of the concrete cantilever walls and cantilever top slabs. The next phase will be to flood the drydock and float the GBS to the nearby deepwater site where construction will continue. In preparation for this stage, a nine-line mooring system was installed during the third quarter. Flooding of the drydock is scheduled to begin during the second quarter of 2014, including removal of the bund wall, which was completed in 2012, and dredging of a tow-out channel for the move to the deepwater site. First steel was cut in July for the utilities and processing module (UPM) at the Hyundai Heavy Industries yard in South Korea. In October, work started on the derrick equipment set also being built by Hyundai. Other highlights of the year include: in March, first steel for the living quarters was cut at Metal World; in May, the Kiewit Offshore Services facility in Marystown cut first steel for the drilling support module; and in June, Oil first flowed from one well in the southern extension in June Full production of HSE s 223 million barrels of oil is now anticipated in Drilling of the water-injector wells by the West Aquarius rig is expected to begin later this year or in early In June, ExxonMobil Canada President Andrew Barry said the Hibernia partners had approved up to five platform wells and up to six subsea water-injector wells for Ben Nevis-Avalon. Terra Nova The Terra Nova oilfield shut down production on Sept. 25 for 11 weeks of maintenance that included replacing broken links in one mooring chain and carrying out preventative maintenance on the remaining eight mooring chains. Suncor Energy extended its previously planned four-week maintenance program following a routine inspection that detected the damaged links. Subsea 7 Canada utilized the dive-support vessel Seven Falcon to complete that work and to install subsea equipment, including one new flow base. The Terra Nova floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel disconnected from the field Oct. 6 and was moored for several weeks in Conception Bay. Other items on the maintenance to-do list included replacement of the vessel s port main power generator gearbox, pressure safety valve changes, pipe replacements, gas compression inspections, valve repairs and replacements, and work on the thruster assisted mooring system. By Nov. 10, the FPSO had returned to the Grand Banks and reconnected to the oilfield. 12 Noia News

COVER STORY Year in Review Suncor expects to begin ramping up production in early December. In October, Suncor filed a project description with the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) outlining plans for an 10-year seismic survey program on the North Grand Banks, where the company currently has interests in two exploration licences, 10 significant discovery licences and three production licences. The proposed start date for the program is spring 2014 or the following year, pending regulatory approvals. Suncor is proposing to conduct 2D, 3D and 4D seismic surveys, along with wellsite surveys and vertical seismic profiling, according to the documents filed with the C- NLOPB. The survey coverage area spans more than 92,000 square kilometres, including portions of the Jeanne d Arc Basin, the Flemish Pass and the Orphan Basin. Suncor is also focused on two new growth areas for the oilfield, the West Flank and Far East. This year, one well was drilled in the West Flank to determine the limits of that area. Suncor also expects to utilize the Henry Goodrich during the first half of 2014 to drill wells to support production from the main field. In April, the C-NLOPB reassessed its oil reserve estimates for the Terra Nova oilfield from 419 million barrels to 506 million barrels bringing it closer to Suncor s reserve estimate of 516 million barrels. Orphan Basin Exploration of the Orphan Basin continues by Chevron Canada as of Noia News press time. The drill ship Stena Carron returned to the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador this past summer to continue drilling the Margaree A-49 well on July 25. The work was started by the West Aquarius rig, which spudded the exploration well on March 16 and wrapped up its portion of the work less than two weeks later moving on to drill wells in the Flemish Pass for Chevron s Orphan Basin partner, Statoil. Noia News 13

COVER STORY Year in Review Tim Dodsen, Statoil s executive vice-president of exploration. Margaree is the third exploration exploration well in the deepwater Orphan Basin. West Coast In early November, Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley announced the province will not accept proposals to hydraulically fracture wells onshore or offshore for petroleum exploration until: The province reviews hydraulic fracturing regulations, rules and guidelines in other provinces; The province completes technical work needed to assess the geological impact on Western Newfoundland; The province consults the public to ensure people have an opportunity to comment before any decision is made. In response, Black Spruce Exploration issued the following statement: We recognize that hydraulic fracturing technology is new to the province and we are encouraged that the government intends to examine the rules and regulations employed in other jurisdictions where this technology has been used. In 2012, Black Spruce proposed onshore-to-offshore exploration drilling on EL 1120, EL 1097R and EL 1170 between 2013 and It also proposed hydraulically fracturing those wells. The company submitted a project description with the C-NLOPB last year, but did not register its drilling program with the provincial Department of Environment. As a result, the environmental assessment by the C-NLOPB is on hold. In late October, Black Spruce Exploration updated its schedule for drilling conventional oil wells at Garden Hill near Cape St. George on the Port au Port Peninsula. The company expects to start drilling at Garden Hill sometime during the first half of 2014, pending regulatory approvals. The drill rig is expected to arrive in the province later this year or in early It s targeting an area close to the original Garden Hill production well that has so far pumped more than 15,000 barrels of oil. Black Spruce signed a farm-in deal with U.K.-based Enegi Oil for an interest in the Garden Hill production permit ( A). In the past year, Black Spruce has inked deals with a variety of junior oil and gas exploration companies operating on the province s west coast, including Ptarmigan Energy, Shoal Point Energy, and Deer Lake Oil and Gas. As a result, the company holds interests in almost 1 million hectares of onshore and offshore land in the region. Under its deal with Ptarmigan, the company also committed to conducting a 3D seismic survey by 2014 and drilling a well at the Lark Harbour prospect no later than mid-june. Land sale The C-NLOPB issued its 2013 call for bids on nine parcels of land in May one parcel is located in the Flemish Pass, four in the Carson Basin and four off the island s west coast. 14 Noia News

COVER STORY Year in Review The closing date for bids will be 120 days after the C-NLOPB completes ongoing strategic environmental assessments (SEAs) for two regions: The SEA update for Western Newfoundland and Labrador is in final stages; A report for the Eastern Newfoundland SEA, which includes the Flemish Pass and Carson Basin, is scheduled for completion in Up for bids in the Flemish Pass is a 266,139-hectare parcel that borders three current exploration licences: EL 1126 held by Statoil, Chevron and Repsol; EL 1111 held by Husky and Repsol; and EL 1134 issued earlier this year to Husky, Suncor and Repsol. Four parcels spanning more than 1.1 million hectares are available in the Carson Basin, which lies south of the Jeanne d Arc Basin. No ELs are currently held in the basin, where water depths range up to 3,000 metres. In Western NL, four parcels totalling more 1 million hectares are up for bids. Two parcels are north of the Port au Port Peninsula, while the other two parcels are west of the peninsula. Water depths in the area range from 50 metres to 400 metres. Eastern NL SEA and Western NL SEA Update On May 8, the C-NLOPB announced the start of a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) for the Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area. It covers the Jeanne d Arc Basin, Orphan Basin, Flemish Pass, the Carson and Salar basins, and extends beyond the 200-mile limit into international waters. Public consultation sessions were held in September. On June 21, the C-NLOPB issued the draft report for the Western Newfoundland and Labrador SEA Update, a process that started in December Following a three-month public comment period that ended in September, a final report is expected later this year. SEAs examine the potential environmental implications of a proposed program or policy decision, and assist the C-NLOPB in future licensing decisions for offshore petroleum activity in each of the four SEA regions: western, eastern, southern and Labrador. C-NLOPB appointments In January the federal and provincial ministers of Natural Resources appointed two members to lead the C-NLOPB. Scott Tessier, Senior Advisor of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs at Chevron Canada Resources in Calgary, was appointed Chair and CEO of the C-NLOPB. Ed Williams, Director of Human Resources for Aurora Energy Resources, was appointed vice-chair. Tessier replaced Max Ruelokke, who served as Chair and CEO of the C-NLOPB from 2006 until his term ended in Ruelokke is currently Senior Manager with Akker Solutions. In June, federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver also announced the appointment of two federal members to the C-NLOPB: Lidija Cicnjak-Chubbs and Cynthia Hickman. Cicnjak-Chubbs is Environment and Loss Control Manager in Goose Bay for Serco Facilities Management Inc. Hickman is a Certified Management Accountant with more than 10 years experience in senior management positions in finance within the health-care industry. Currently, the C-NLOPB has seven board members. 16 Noia News

The scholarship commemorates the first major milestone of Newfoundland & Labrador s petroleum industry - production of first oil from the Hibernia field on November 17, Established with the generous support of the provincial oil & gas industry, this $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school student in Newfoundland & Labrador who is entering post-secondary studies with the intention to pursue a petroleum-related career. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best meets academic, extra-curricular and needs criteria. Rebecca is from the Goulds and graduated from St. Kevin s High School this past June with Honours status. She was involved in a many diverse activities during her high school years, including choir, soccer and softball, Tutoring for Tuition, SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), social justice club, and Maverick Motivators, a group dedicated completely to giving back to the community. Rebecca has had a strong interest in marine and environmental conservation since she was a little girl. From the very moment you start high school, everyone is asking you what you want to be, or what you want to do for the rest of your life, she said. For many people this is a tough decision, however, not for myself. I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to this field of study. Marine Environmental Technology is a three year diploma program offered at the Ridge Road campus of the Marine Institute. Graduates of the program develop environmentally sound projects and work to prevent and create responses to marine pollution or degradation. They work in diverse jobs and sectors, from safety inspection to climate control abatement, as the environmental industry provides support for all other sectors. Rebecca is truly a fresh young mind and a fitting recipient of this industry honour, said Trevor Giles, Chair, Noia Board of Directors. My true aspiration would be to work in the oil & gas industry, gain knowledge about marine life and help create more environmentally friendly safe projects, she said. I look forward to learning about something I love and am passionate about on a day-to-day basis 20 Noia News

Dunderdale said 40 onshore wells, one offshore well and nine onshore to offshore wells have been drilled on the province s west coast since The premier also noted that exploration companies have spent more than $100 million in the region since This offshore activity combined with onshore activity will translate into economic and employment opportunities and promises long future growth and success, said Dunderdale. I look forward to the results for the current call for bids on the west coast. Four offshore parcels are up for bids in the land sale announced in May. Bidding will close 120 days after completion of the Western Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area Strategic Environmental Assessment Update. Jim Keating, Vice-President of Oil & Gas of Nalcor Energy, told delegates the company is in the final planning stages for another three-year seismic survey program this time along the province s south coast. Nalcor is wrapping up its first three-year, multi-client seismic survey off Labrador & Newfoundland northeast slope with partners, TGS-NOPEC Geophysical and Petroleum Geo-Services. 22 Noia News

INDUSTRY NEWS 8th annual Western Newfoundland Symposium Keating said they collected 50,000 line kilometres of seismic data and the survey s coverage area is about the same size as the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. He said 75 per cent of the area has not been previously imaged by seismic surveys. David Murray, President & CEO of Black Spruce Exploration, says the company will focus on drilling up to four conventional oil wells at Garden Hill with a budget of $60 million. The company officially opened its Corner Brook office Sept. 11 and is securing warehouse space for drill pipe and supplies. Black Spruce plans to conduct seismic surveys over EL 1120 with partner Ptarmigan Energy in As well, the company is aiming to raise $100 million in capital for future activities. Murray, who expects the provincial government to introduce hydraulic fracturing guidelines in future, says Black Spruce is in no hurry and will patiently await the rules. The company has proposed hydraulically fracturing wells drilled from shore to offshore at several west coast prospects. Robert Webb, CEO of Investcan Energy, said the privately held company and its partners have spent $30 million on six exploration wells on the west coast since Investcan is planning further exploration in the Bay St. George Basin with the Thoulet No. 1 well, pending regulatory approvals. Paul Durling, Chief Geophysicist of Corridor Resources, said the company expects to drill a well at its Old Harry prospect in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in , pending regulatory approvals. The company received an extension to its exploration licence (EL 1105) from the C-NLOPB, which is working to complete the Strategic Environmental Assessment for the western offshore region. 24 INDUSTRY NEWS NL environmental assessments Environmental assessment of oil & gas projects in Newfoundland & Labrador Environmental assessment (EA) is a regulatory review process that is applied to proposed development activities in order to identify and attempt to address their potential environmental effects as part of project planning and decision-making. Oil & gas exploration and production projects in Newfoundland & Labrador, including those in both marine and on-land environments, may be subject to provincial and/or federal EA requirements. The NL Environmental Protection Act requires that specified projects be presented for examination through the provincial EA process. The associated EA Regulations list those projects that require review, and outlines the procedures and timelines associated with registration, review and eventual governmental decisions around whether the project is released, rejected or requires further assessment (through an EPR and/or EIS). Although projects in offshore locations are typically not subject to provincial EA, those that include on-land or nearshore elements may require review and approval. It is often the ancillary components of onshore exploration projects (such as associated access roads) that triggers provincial EA review. The federal EA process under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) has been in place for several decades, and traditionally applied to projects that involved the federal government as proponent or as a provider of funding, land and/ or certain permits. The need for one or more such federal decisions (triggers) was what previously determined whether federal EA was required, including certain authorizations from the Canada-Newfoundland & Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) for proposed offshore oil and gas activities. By Steve Bonnell, AMEC Environment & Infrastructure In July 2012, a new CEAA came into force, which considerably changed the nature and focus of the federal EA process. The associated Regulations Designating Physical Activities lists the projects that may require federal EA, including various types of 24 Noia News

INDUSTRY NEWS NL environmental assessments onshore and offshore petroleum production activities. Offshore exploration (seismic and drilling) projects were not listed specifically in the 2012 Regulations. Since the recent changes to the federal EA process, however, the C-NLOPB has indicated that it will be continuing to require that project-specific assessments be completed for proposed oil and gas exploration activities in the NL Offshore Area. In April 2013, the federal government released a set of proposed amendments to the CEAA Regulations, which were finalized in November 2013 and included the addition of the drilling, testing and abandonment of offshore exploratory wells in the first drilling program in an area set out in one or more exploration licences to the list of projects subject to federal EA. EA is often the first formal glimpse that governments and the public are given to proposed oil and gas projects, and requires a proponent to open up its proposal to external review, scrutiny and eventual regulatory decisions about whether or not (and if so, how) the project may proceed. At the same time, the EA process continues to function as an important environmental planning tool, through which operators have sought to identify likely environmental issues, engage with stakeholders and the public, and to attempt to avoid or reduce environmental issues and thus, manage any associated risks through proactive (and often iterative) planning at the very early stages of their projects. Identifying, understanding and addressing EA requirements in an effective and timely manner is an important aspect of the planning and implementation of any oil and gas project in Newfoundland & Labrador. 26 Image courtesy of VMT. Since the 1982 Ocean Ranger disaster, Newfoundland & Labrador s petroleum industry has seen multiple improvements in offshore safety. Formed in 2004 as a result of ongoing safety research following the disaster, Virtual Marine Technology (VMT) has been contributing to the effort by developing marine simulation technology to enhance lifeboat training for offshore workers. Lifeboat Training Simulators: Making the offshore safer Alfred Whiffen, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for VMT, said that following the Ocean Ranger disaster there was discussion surrounding the level of preparedness of the people onboard and specifically, their ability to use lifeboats. Research at Memorial University s engineering faculty and the Marine Institute eventually led to the creation of the St. John s-based company, which focuses its efforts on simulation involving small boats such as lifeboats and fast rescue boats. Twenty employees currently work on research, development and construction of the simulators, all in VMT s St. John s office. The company has built and deployed 14 simulators to date, including one for the Marine Institute s Offshore Safety and Survival Centre, two for a lifeboat training facility in Mexico, one for a German frigate program and another for the Brazilian navy. A helicopter ditching simulator is also currently under development. Whiffen said the technology continues to evolve. Today s simulator systems are easy to use, the interfaces between human beings and machines have become so much more effective, the training curriculum that s included in the simulation system has evolved and it s much more focused on what industry is looking for, said Whiffen. VMT broke new ground recently with the deployment of the first onboard lifeboat simulator on the Hibernia platform. The SurvivalQuest Lifeboat Simulator was installed earlier this year, offering enhanced lifeboat training for mariners and offshore workers. SurvivalQuest is an enclosed cabin, full mission lifeboat simulator system, which uses lifeboat-specific helm controls and virtual environments to allow lifeboat coxswains and crew to practice emergency launch scenarios not possible using conventional training and drills. VMT s lifeboat simulators are approved for use by maritime regulatory agencies 26 Noia News

SAFETY Making the offshore safer VMT s SurvivalQuest Lifeboat Simulator provides advanced lifeboat training. Image courtesy of VMT. such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and U.S. Coast Guard, and certified for use by world leading certification body Det Norske Veritas. SurvivalQuest complements the onshore training already in place at the Marine Institute s Offshore Safety and Survival Centre. Whiffen explained that because of the risks associated with launching and recovering lifeboats in harsh operating conditions, operators and drilling companies are not required to launch lifeboats frequently to practice using them, although they are launched to ensure that equipment is in working order. Our simulator is really meant to enhance the skills participants develop in onshore training programs, said Whiffen. It gives them ongoing exposure to the actual hardware and launch scenarios that would be required for their specific facility. While Hibernia is the first offshore installation to be equipped with a SurvivalQuest Lifeboat Simulator, Whiffen says that with the interest the company is receiving, it won t be long before many other installations are equipped. VMT is receiving inquiries from potential clients around the world. Most of the companies we re talking to are looking at the technology and they believe it has value in terms of helping them develop competency which is an enhancement to the shore-based training they already receive, noted Whiffen. What this system seems to do is provide a level of competency that is over and above that compliance-based training. Whiffen cites a recent presentation to a Gulf of Mexico drilling contractor as validation of the company s work. A representative from that company was a former Boeing employee involved in development of the Boeing 777 simulator. He acknowledged how impressed he was with VMT s work. He was quite complimentary and asked many questions before he came to that conclusion, said Whiffen. It was quite encouraging. INTEGRATED OFFSHORE FIELD DEVELOPMENT Together, WorleyParsons and INTECSEA offer customers a single integrated project delivery service, from wellhead to market, for the most challenging offshore developments. This integration brings increased transparency and simplified communication consistently resulting in increased efficiencies, cost and schedule benefits, and better safety performance for employees, contractors, customers and the environment. Noia News 27

SAFETY Making the offshore safer Although there are other computer-based simulators in existence, VMT s cabin lifeboat simulator is unique. The hardware inside the cabin replicates that of an actual lifeboat, from the controls to the variety of launch scenarios that an operator might encounter when launching in a storm, in a fire, an explosion, or rescuing a person who has gone overboard. Research Going Further North VMT is also extending its research to applications further north. The company is involved in work with Petroleum Research Newfoundland & Labrador to look at how small craft such as lifeboats manoeuvre in different levels of ice. Full scale ice testing and trials have been conducted at the Institute for Ocean Technology in St. John s to begin developing simulation software for ice covered waters. VMT is also joining leading European organizations to improve emergency response and survival training for small craft operators in Arctic waters. The EU-funded Small Craft Emergency Response and Survival Training for Arctic Conditions (SMACS) project aims to make the Arctic a safer location for small craft maritime activity by developing a safety and emergency response training program specifically focused on the needs of Arctic small craft mariners. With funding from the Northern Periphery Program, the Cork Institute of Technology through The Nimbus Centre and the National Maritime College of Ireland are leading a team to produce an Arctic operations training program for use throughout northern Europe. We are privileged to have been selected to bring our expertise in ice simulation to such a prestigious maritime development team said Randy Billard, CTO for VMT. We believe that Northern Europe, with its similar operational environment, can benefit from the advanced training technologies we have developed in Newfoundland & Labrador. Whiffen said these projects have one common goal. All of this work is about keeping people safer in offshore operations. That s the gist of why this is of interest to all of the companies that we get an opportunity to talk to and work with. Dependable Lubricant Solutions We re always there when you need us. WISE NL President Gloria Montano in background. Photo courtesy of Collette Phillips. Celebrating Our Past, Shaping Our Future By Carolyn J. Emerson, Honourary Life Member, WISE NL Intergenerational interdisciplinary lily pads. Those are the words that Gloria Montano, President, uses to describe today s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) NL. On Oct. 23, WISE NL hosted Celebrating Our Past, Shaping Our Future in recognition of its 25th anniversary. The petroleum sector was well represented in the audience of 165, and as conference supporters. Non-profit WISE-NL began after Mona El Tahan returned from a national meeting inspired to form a provincial WISE group. From an informal get-together of several women in early 1998, great things evolved. In 1989, a large provincial conference brought together students, technical women, educators, government officials, and representatives of organizations working to encourage more women in science and engineering. That event generated a poster series, award-winning video and the Student Summer Employment Program (SSEP). The latter flagship program gives female grade 11 students paid summer research jobs at Memorial University and other organizations in St. John s, western NL and Labrador. SSEP, which will enter its 25th year in 2014, has seen 800 young women from all across the province experience what it would be like to be a scientist, engineer or medical researcher. And almost half have gone on to do just that. Or to become a successful politician with an engineering background. Charlene Johnson, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, was a SSEP student in 1992 and introduced the conference by sharing her reflections on the benefits of her WISE experience. An investment of over $2 million including significant contributions from Noia members has fueled that success. What a legacy! In recognition of professional and community contributions of SSEP graduates, an inaugural SSEP Excellence Award was presented to Yasmine Dannawy. Yasmine was an SSEP student in 1991 who went on to coordinate SSEP for five years and develop an impressive career as an educator, currently serving as Vice Principal of a large international high school in Dubai. Her WISE experience stays with her as she encourages young women to choose technical studies and to live their own dreams. The afternoon featured two panels of seven professionals from industry and academia who shared their experiences of establishing their careers and undertaking diversity initiatives to retain and advance women. Common 30 Noia News

DIVERSITY WISE - NL s 25th anniversary themes of loving to learn, having a career with meaning, being true to your values, and being deliberate in strategies and metrics for diversity emerged from the panels and permeated the whole event. In the evening, a slide presentation of the rich history of WISE NL activity, contribution and fun culminated in a standing ovation of appreciation from the audience. Gloria Montano also spoke of current and new programs for our WISE NL future. The banquet featured Greta Raymond, former Vice-President at Petro-Canada and now a consultant in environment, health, safety, and sustainability. Greta s education in human biology and environmental health created the portal through which she became a technical advisor, senior executive, mentor, and management consultant. She recently chaired the board of an international non-profit that reaches millions of people with clean water. Greta provided engaging anecdotes and lessons learned to inspire the audience, which ranged from high school students to organizational leaders, to think and act more broadly. And those lily pads that guide girls and women to the next possibilities? They range from activities for Sparks, Science Fair Awards, the Summer Program for Grade 11 students, to the WISE NL Undergraduate and Graduate Student Societies at Memorial University. Early career professionals and senior students participate in WinSETT leadership workshops and themselves take leadership roles in WISE NL governance and activities. Established professionals share their experiences and contributions with technical women and the general public in the WISE NL Statoil Speaker Series, and are developing the Women in Science and Engineering Entrepreneurship Program. And WISE NL representatives bring their perspectives to boards, conferences and forums. The richness of WISE NL is derived from the generosity, talent, and enthusiasm of our intergenerational, interdisciplinary members and supporters. There was much to celebrate on Oct. 23 and we invite you to be part of the next 25 years! Noia News 31

FEATURE Home: not always where the heart is Lisa McCarthy, Senior Financial Analyst, NAL Resources in Calgary. It s been said that Newfoundland s greatest export is its people. Home: not always where the heart is Every year hundreds head off to seemingly greener pastures to seek employment. The demand for skilled trades workers, and certain university and technology program graduates, is so great that oil companies based in Alberta and Texas mount recruitment drives to entice Newfoundlanders to move out west or south of the border. Stephanie Penney is a Workforce Planning Analyst with Nexen Energy in Calgary. She was recruited to move to Calgary during one such drive. Nexen actively recruited me to come to Calgary as part of their nation-wide road show. It s not that I was actively looking to leave, they just made it easy with the great career opportunity as well as full relocation support. Once settled, Stephanie quickly adapted to the Calgary way of life. She thrives on variety and feels the opportunities are endless. She also enjoys the company she works for. The CEO knows me by name and I ve been treated really well. There are people here who look out for me personally and professionally and I ve been given great work. Noia News 33

FEATURE Home: not always where the heart is Stephanie was also captivated by the varied career paths offered by her employer. They were offering a very unique development opportunity to rotate through three different areas of the company in three years, great compensation and benefits, and a lot of opportunity for future growth, she explained. So far, I ve moved through the company in finance, tax, marketing, risk management and insurance, and I m now in strategic workforce planning in HR. I just don t think that kind of opportunity was really out there back home at the time. Career Opportunities Other Newfoundlanders have also been beckoned by the career opportunities. Lisa McCarthy, a Senior Financial Analyst with Calgary s NAL Resources, just couldn t ignore the accelerated career advancement she feels exists in Alberta, and says, I feel that moving up the ranks would not happen so quickly if I had stayed in Newfoundland & Labrador. Lisa also finds that, despite the higher living costs, the standard of living is much better. She stated that taxes in Alberta are much more attractive than taxes in NL. Despite being born in England, Phil Embleton spent his teenage and university years in Newfoundland & Labrador, and still considers it his home. Phil is currently Review and Approval Editor with Saudi Arabia s giant Aramco oil company. Unable to find employment in his field, he left the province with his wife and children in the early 1990s. After stints in the Arctic and California, he headed to Saudi Arabia. I thoroughly enjoy living in Saudi Arabia and really can t believe they actually pay me to do it. Every day I leave my house and the first thing I see is sunshine and palm trees. I feel like I m retired, he said with a smile. Friends graduating with the same degree and higher marks were flipping burgers in Newfoundland. Even though he recognizes that there are more industry-related jobs in Newfoundland & Labrador compared to when he left seven years ago, Josh doesn t regret leaving. He feels that, in Alberta, companies are much quicker to promote, provided you put in the hard work. Lisa McCarthy highly recommends working outside this province to trades school and university graduates. I believe the experience and exposure you will receive in Alberta would be more than what you receive in Newfoundland & Labrador. After a few years, if you feel the need to return, then I believe you would be in a better position and more experienced than most people your age who had stayed to work and live in Newfoundland & Labrador. Phil Embleton agrees that moving away is a great way to build valuable experience. At the time of graduation, the career opportunities were endless in Alberta. Additionally the higher paying starting salaries in Alberta were very attractive to a student with an outstanding student loan. I don t believe I would have received the same compensation or opportunity if I had chosen to stay in - Lisa McCarthy, Senior Financial Analyst with NAL Resources, NL. I can buy a return trip to Vietnam for far less than it costs to travel from St. John s to P.E.I, he said. Missing family and friends Despite the many benefits to living and working away, it can also carry a heavy price. Missing family is a major drawback for many expatriates. Bill Ramsay is a Contracts Manager with Toyo Engineering Canada in Calgary. Like thousands of others, he left his home province and headed to Fort McMurray in Despite enjoying the higher wages and lower taxes, he s still a Newfoundlander at heart. I d much prefer to be home in Newfoundland & Labrador. I enjoy it (here in Calgary), but still feel like we are travelling and not really committed to Alberta. Similar sentiments are echoed by Blair Paul, originally from Ferryland on the Avalon Peninsula s southern shore. He first moved to Alberta in 2006, living in both Calgary and Edmonton. In 2012 he took a position as a Global Line Specialist with Weatherford Drilling Services International in Houston, Texas. Like most, he enjoys the higher wages, lower taxes, and greater work opportunities that come with living away. And the comparison between Houston and East Coast Canada winters is easy to handle. But he still misses the rock and plans to return someday. I miss not seeing family more regularly and not working where I grew up. I also miss the small town feel, low crime, winter sports, and some of my long time friends, he said. For others, returning to Newfoundland & Labrador is not high on the priority list. Stephanie Penney admits that it s hard being away from family and friends and missing special occasions such as birthdays and weddings, but says that it would have to be an incredibly attractive opportunity to convince her to move home. But you just have to accept that you ll miss out on a lot. 36 Noia News
