4 SUMMARY General objectives AURORA aims to: Identify a common and feasible strategy to promote Cervical Cancer Screening (CCS) in the New EU Member States targeting women in the reproductive age (30-69 years old) and ensuring the coverage of the hard to reach groups (according to the demographic or socio-economic definitions: young people, rural people, ethnic groups and minorities). Assist these States in the implementation of evidence-based population based screening for cervical cancer. Promote a European exchange of information and expertise (training and education) on the development and implementation of good practices in Cervical Cancer Prevention and Advocacy. AURORA consortium will: identify and analyse good practices and strategies to promote the CCS. Train 24 health professionals as Trainers of trainers about how to reach, approach the project target group and to perform the CCS. Train 12 advocacy leaders in cervical cancer control advocacy able to persuade influential people to stimulate change. Establish a network of healthcare centers that will test AURORA methodology. Strategic relevance and contribution to the public health programme AURORA has been developed according to the priorities of the Call for Proposal Public Health Programme aiming to promote the exchange of good practices on promotion of Cervical Cancer Screening in New Member States, and in particular regarding hard to reach populations. In addition, according to the DECISION No 1350/2007/EC establishing a second programme of Community action in the field of health ( ), AURORA will also foster appropriate coordination and synergies among Community initiatives regarding the collection of comparable data on major diseases, including cancer. AURORA project is in line with the COUNCIL RECOMMENDATION of 2 December 2003 on Cancer Screening stating that adequate training of personnel is a prerequisite for high quality screening and with the European guidelines for quality assurance in cervical cancer screening - Second Edition, stating that the function of advocacy groups in cancer screening is increasingly essential. Methods and means AURORA will be structured in 6 macro-tasks. Firstly, the partners will carry out the Page 4/17

5 analysis of the local context studying the literature in the participating countries concerning Cervical Cancer Epidemiology, Screening programmes and presentation of the project target group needs. The analysis of the local context will be useful to the identification and analysis of good practices and strategies in the fight against Cervical Cancer on how to promote the Cervical Cancer Screening (CCS) among the project target groups. Then, AURORA will organise a training course for healthcare professionals and a training course for advocacy leaders. Both the courses will be organized at EU level but specific modules will be targeted on the partners local needs and specific situation of the cervical cancer screening. Moreover, AURORA consortium will establish a network of pilot centers already performing CCS to test the AURORA methodology involving trained healthcare professionals. Finally, an E-Learning environment will be developed to serve all the project users and target group. Expected outcomes period According to its objectives and activities, AURORA expected outcomes will be to analyse to local context to organize more effective training courses and prevention activities in the participating countries, to identify good practices to increase in the participating countries the number of cervical screening tests thanks to the sharing of the good practices and the transfer of the project results to the not participating countries, train healthcare professionals and advocacy leaders, increase the number of screened people thanks to the pilot action and finally, to transfer the knowledge of AURORA partners to the healthcare professionals of the participating countries thanks to the e-learning environment.
