Røros Smart Data Collection (SDC) = Transport Infrastructure Management version 2.0 Some research perspectives on the future of data management in transportation 1
Who's Tomas? Civil engineer with a transport and computer science background MSC. NTNU 2001 PhD NTNU 2012 Work on tackling environmental issues associated with freight transport from a technology perspective. 2
Why can I tell you something? Environmental issues cannot be reduced to macro emission figures like 4.5 grams of NO x per kilometre! Emission studies are highly context sensitive, and the devil is in the detail! Thus to build a high quality emission model there is a need for a great deal of input data. This data exists, there is just the need to ask the right questions to get access to the data. This talk will focus on the lessons learned for experiments within my PHD and spinn-off projects from the PhD work. 3
The traditional role of data in infrastructure management There is a problem Find out how to fix it Build collection and processing solution Store for internal purposes Problem Solved Management issues Policy issues Develop ITS solution Procure galvanized steel to place equipment on Highly specialized databases Only infrastructure owner is capable of these processes 4
What's the new norm? There are problems Congestion Environment Lack of information Poor maintenance There is data, Smart data collection Open standards and open source software An answer to a problem Traveltime Driver behaviour Georeferenced data Observed forces on vehicles Any nerdy 14 year old can do this! 5
A change of focus will come: FROM State a problem, develop technology and collect data to solve a problem (government focus, version 1.0) TO Look at the data and see what problems could potentially be solved (innovation focus, version 2.0) 6
What are the driving forces? Technology is cheap and paired with knowledge Open standards Academia is paying back Development is ego powered This is the core of Smart Data Collection! 7
Technology is cheap 8
And paired with knowledge 9
Open standards Emission regulation has forced vehicle manufacturers to provide standardized information from the vehicle. SAE and ISO OBD PID (On-board diagnostics Parameter IDs), vehicle speed, throttle, engine load and fuel consumption OBD fault codes File formats and exchange formats (shape files, JSON, geojson, WKT, SQL, GPSX, NMEA, KML ) with libs and modules to make the data useful for many languages Collaborative tools GITHub, Code.google.com, sourceforge.net are free for open source projects 10
Academia is paying back Python Guido Van Rossums PhD Linux Linus Torvalds MSC. The GNU tools around the kernel - Richard Matthew Stallman, Harvard, MIT Postgresql Michael Stonebraker, University of California at Berkeley A small eco-system (GIS and routing) Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka also known as "R & R" of the Statistics Department of the University of Auckland Massimo Banzi ARDUINO a modest tool for Banzi s students at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (IDII) And the list just continues and development is still supported buy many of the creators. FreeBSD ports collection (open source software as of may 2013) 11
Development is ego powered Producing code that others can use gives status, committer and maintainer credits. Semi-social forums for code support: GIThub full free team development tools with forking of projects 12
Time for a break 10 minutes? 13
What types of data do we have? Many, and we have sites to push the data to: xively.com formerly Cosm The NO 2 debate: Other: Radiation Trips recreation Noise Accelerations Turning rates Humidity and temperature These are just the tip of the iceberg 14
Why is NO2 data collected? Individuals (not corporations) are able to collect data and merge the data with other sources using free tools and opens standards. The AQE (Air Quality Egg) is not just a sensors, it is a political weapon. Originally designed to collect data on the local environment as an alternative to the government produce NO 2 figures. 15
What about traveltime information? Typical stuff that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration should provide, right? Google traffic 16
Getting directions Dit.no 17
The future is in mixing and matching data Infrastructure owners traditional way, is long development cycles with good final products. 14 year old script-kiddies, push what ever fun and weird data combinations that they can think of The Trafikanten/Ruter and Oslo kino case! (A failed attempt to have control over data) Typically the result is a small app pushed to mobile device through a streamlined interface utilizing data from the device. 18
The change in role of the infrastructure owner Has no longer control over the chain of events from problem to solution. Might not even know there is a problem Could potentially be reduced to a simple data provider, without any value addition to the data. Induviduals can harvest data using simple and cheap technology and merge it with public data in any way they seem fit. There is probably a kid working on an app trying to give you rout information when sever incidents happen, as the NPRA and not supplying the industry standard RDS/TMC messages in the Trondheim area. I'm not going to trust his any less than the NPRA that will not give me the information. There is no way back, open data EU directives are here to stay, the infrastructure owners have no way to remove unwanted apps! How do we make sure that the apps do the right things? 19
Sharing data and maintaining control over the final information This is an interesting topic for lots of research! Classical research Action research My fifty-cents: Play along with the new developments, embrace version 2.0 where the innovator is in the driving seat, accept that the government role is changing. Data can and will be used against you! (Before and after studies based on fleet management data) Use the power of the example to state your claim. There is a need for organization like the NPRA to provide the developer communities with examples that shows how it should be done, practical and theoretical. Some of the complex systems run by the infrastructure owners will be replaced by simpler more standardized building blocks. (ie. Vegkart) 20
