4 MAIN OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how marine ecosystem services assessment can contribute to effective marine management and governance in the Western Channel ( How are ES assessment used and useful in decisionmaking processes?)

6 WP1: Assessing and valuing marine ES Developing an operational framework for assessing and valuing marine ecosystem services Review existing approaches to ES assessment and valuation, Propose a coherent approach to monetary and non-monetary assessment and valuation, collaborative working between social scientists, economists and ecologists to enable best practice to be exchanged at a scale appropriate to the Channel area. Deliverable: a framework including a set of guidelines for assessing and valuing marine ecosystem services and a best practice exchange. Trialling assessments at pilot study locations 6 pilot study locations at various spatial scales that are representative of a range of common Channel ecosystem services. It will apply the Framework developed to the pilot study sites and determine relevant valuations for ecosystem services at those sites. The results of the trials will inform the development of the scenarios in Phase 3. Deliverable: synthesis of lessons learned and recommendations tailored to the needs of practitioners.

9 A triage approach for defining the aim and scope of ES assessment (L.Pendleton, DUKE Univ, /NOAA) Identify ES for which an ES assessment would be most appropriate, Determine whether an ES assessment for the services in question is possible in practice, Preliminary delimitation of the scope of the assessment by addressing a set of questions: aim of the valuation? (Improve knowledge, Integrate knowledge; Initial diagnosis, Raising awaraness, Facilitate trade offs, Compare management options, Increase well-being) Important policy issues in relation to marine ES? What parts of the marine ecosystem are concerned by these policy issues? The potential for the value of the service to change? The influence of the proposed management intervention on the change in value? The other factors that affect the value of the service? The feasibility of undertaking the assessment?
