2 WELCOME Choosing a career path can be an exciting but sometimes overwhelming decision. To help you make an informed decision and choose a career that s right for you, attend Careers that shape the world, an annual experience day for Year 11 and 12 students. DURING THE DAY YOU WILL: Talk to industry professionals, academic experts and students. Learn about what they do and why they love it. Discover the careers that you can pursue in: Arts, Communication, Education and Society Business, Economics and Law Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology Health and Medicine Science Learn how you can create change by doing what you love, in a career that s right for you.
3 PROGRAM Careers that shape the world includes three blocks of interactive and career-focused sessions across a range of study areas, followed by a fourth block of sessions that explore university life and beyond. When registering you will need to select one session from each time block. You will automatically be allocated to a welcome session when you register. Register online at uq.edu.au/shape-your-world. Places are limited, so register early to secure your preferred sessions. A snapshot of the pathways to a career as a primary or secondary school teacher, and the potential career opportunities beyond the classroom. Take part in interactive discussions, or just enjoy the show. Discover exciting careers in social sciences such as: archaeology, policing and corrections, cultural heritage management, native title, social and public policy, and social planning in the developing world. Fancy travelling the world and reporting on everything from natural disasters to the latest in fashion trends? Discover what it takes to tackle this highly competitive and exciting field. From composing video game soundtracks, to performing with laptops and loop pedals, to instructing classes with ipads, find out how music technologies are encouraging the growth of new careers and skills. From humanitarian work in Indonesia to a TV show host in Korea, our graduates needed more than Google Translator to land their dream job. Find out how studying a language can open doors to unexpected careers. BUSINESS, ECONOMICS AND LAW Advanced Finance and Economics How do we achieve equality in an unequal world? Politics, Philosophy and Economics Your Law degree: how far can it take you? Discover what it takes to be a leader in the rewarding world of finance and economics; from investment banking, funds management and stockbroking, to international finance and trade, financial consulting or economics. We will explore the current workplace diversity climate in Australia and discuss how the study of subjects such as Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour equip our future managers to tackle such critical problems. Do you have what it takes to be prime minister? How about an economic or social analyst? Or a success in consumer, international or public affairs? A Politics, Philosphy and Economics degree puts you in the box seat to tackle current and future global challenges. From Paris to New York; from Sydney to Mexico. 5 BLOCK 1: 9.00AM 10.00AM ENGINEERING, ARCHITECTURE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Algorithmic thinking with Ozobots Chemical engineering Designing your place Electricity to the world - affordable 24/7 power Engineers without borders: sanitation and water Robotics Technology and design Virtual reality tour By drawing paths and creating colour codes, you will work together in teams to create a city for a robot (the Ozobot). Be introduced to algorithmic thinking, prediction and planning in a fun and creative workshop. Chemical engineering plays an important role in addressing key global challenges such as improved public health and sustainability. Take part in hands-on activities and learn why chemical engineering is a career that shapes the world. During this architecture workshop, you will design and draw a space just for you. Use your own imagination, gain an insight into the creative design process, and see what it is like to study Architecture at UQ. 1.5 billion people live without electricity. This means dark nights, no running water, no refrigeration for medicine, and no communication technology. We need to do our share to change this situation. As engineers, our job is to develop this technology. Sanitation and water are two major issues facing developing countries. Learn about the lifesaving process of water filtration, and how civil and environmental engineering contribute to a more sustainable environment. Robotics is a rapidly growing field. Experience building and programming robots and learn about the basics of artificial intelligence. Using MaKeyMaKey kits, learn about electronics and micro-controllers. You will create human-remote controllers to play Space Invaders or control a flight simulator. The workshop is fun and hands-on, and requires no former experience. Experience what it feels like to be on-site at a mine, a building site, or a chemical processing plant. If you are interested in virtual reality, you will love this.

BUSINESS, ECONOMICS AND LAW Delivering products and services in a digitalised world Experiments: games economists play Privacy law in a collected world New technologies have altered the types of products/services that marketers develop and how they promote and distribute these. Learn how marketers can use these technologies to deliver products/services to today s global consumers. Dr. Kenan Kalayci will demonstrate how economics experiments can be used to better understand economic behaviour, test economic policies and make better business decisions. Mark Burdon considers the legal challenges of privacy in our everyday lives in this rapidly developing, datadriven society, in which the foundations of privacy law struggle to meet the complexities of technological development.

9 BLOCK 2: 10.45AM 11.45AM HEALTH, MEDICINE, BEHAVIOURAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES Careers in psychology Discovering causes and treating diseases with biomedical science Exercise and sport sciences explore human movement Putting the care into your career So you want to be a doctor? Find out what psychology is, and how it can help us understand human behaviour and thinking. Biomedical scientists perform many different roles such as carrying out research into the causes of disease, and evaluating how effective medicines and other therapies are for the treatment of disease. Get a taste of careers in exercise and sport sciences and clinical exercise physiology by participating in various demonstrations and activities conducted in our Human Performance Laboratory. Discover that physio is more than massage, speech pathology is different to drama, and that occupational therapy is more than a job. Consider a career in physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech pathology and help people get the most out of life. Being a doctor is not an easy occupation, however if you have a strong passion and love for the profession it can be extremely rewarding. Find out more about where a career in medicine can take you. 10 BLOCK 3: 1.00PM 2.00PM ARTS, COMMUNICATION, EDUCATION AND SOCIETY Creative industries: employable skills from a Drama major Ever wanted to be a criminologist? Excavating the rich human past The career advantage of studying philosophy and the humanities UQ Drama graduates go on to forge sustainable careers within the creative industries. Hear about how you can pursue career options from arts administration, to directors, actors, playwrights and even the role of state premier. Criminologists explore why people commit crimes, where and how they are likely to offend, and develop ways to control and prevent further infringements. Find out more about the opportunities of a criminology career. Discover the work of archaeologists: our outdoor facility provides an excellent setting for learning the ropes of archaeological fieldwork. Work alongside archaeologists as they excavate, map, sieve and identify artefacts. Learn about the glitterati of CEOs, ambassadors, high commissioners, politicians, governor generals, tech company founders, actors, and artists who all began by studying history, the classics, religion or philosophy. BUSINESS, ECONOMICS AND LAW Can free trade be trumped? The future of human rights in Australia The psychology of the stock market Globalisation is contentious; is free trade really desirable? Is it possible to get better, more fair trade deals by bi-lateral negotiation? We will run interactive experiments to find answers to these and more economic puzzles. How are human rights protected in Australia? Students will consider how our legal system currently protects human rights and discuss if we can do better, or if Australian citizens rights and liberties are appropriately protected. Many people are invested in the stock market but what makes it so attractive? Obtaining an understanding of the finance industry is essential to understanding the stock market and the power of investing.

Through UQ s Idea Hub, learn how to build your own business model, pitch your start-up idea and begin your innovation journey. Chemical engineering plays an important role in addressing key global challenges such as improved public health and sustainability. Take part in hands-on activities and learn why chemical engineering is a career that shapes the world. During this architecture workshop, you will design and draw a space just for you. Use your own imagination, gain an insight into the creative design process, and see what it is like to study Architecture at UQ. Engineers improve the lives of millions with contributions to medical technologies including the development of prosthetic limbs. Design and construct a prosthetic limb for an amputee, and test its effectiveness against other teams. Robotics is a rapidly growing field. Fear not. We are setting the record straight on a career as a dietitian. Can psychologists read minds? Is what we see really out there? Why do people behave the way they do? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this brief introduction to psychology.

In this session, current UQ students will share their first-year experiences and give some tips on how to prepare for university life. An undergraduate degree is a gateway to a wide range of career opportunities. Discover how your experience at university can shape your ability to tackle some of the biggest problems facing the world today. Find out how to make the most of your time at UQ. This session will provide information about student life and leadership, global study options, practical experience and undergraduate research programs.
