Big Picture Curriculum Planning Year 7 Project Title / Unit Iconic Designs and Surface graphics What are we trying to achieve? (curriculum aims) The Big National Curriculum Coverage Picture This project will enable students to develop their skills and the knowledge using design and development skills. Knowledge Term Students will gain knowledge of drawing styles and techniques including sketching, perspective and rendering Skills Design and development skills including 3d drawing and rendering. Develop creativity Use of cutting tools and modelling materials to develop a prototype. Key Questions to investigate How do we get inspiration for designing products? How do we communicate our design thinking to develop a product? Why do we use prototypes? Understanding Students should apply their knowledge of H&S when working during practical activities and focused practical tasks. They will need to understand the design process and where ideas come from. The will look at the root of design and where designers get inspiration from.

Continuity and Progression What we will assess (and how) These skills will be built upon in GCSE graphics and will be used. The drawing and development skills will be developed throughout the technology courses as will the Evaluation writing skills. Attitudes and Values Students at all times will be expected to work in a polite and considerate way. They will behave responsibly and be accountable for their actions. In practical activities:- Students will be expected to work without conflict and encourage others within the team. Share equipment and materials well. Be well mannered, courteous and praise other students work. Work safely and responsibly by themselves and show due regard to others. Consider the views, needs and opinions of other students. Be prepared to lead a group or team and give honest feedback. Consider social, moral and cultural issues within Art. How well are we achieving our aims? (impact, assessment and accountability measures) APP Tasks Single point perspective task Two point perspective task Drawing and rendering the design Evaluation Assessment N/A

SKILLS, MP3 AND PACKAGING Year 7 SOW Every lesson students will complete a manufacturing log. This log explains the activities participated in during the lessons and what tools they have used. There is also an evaluative section, in this they explain what they could have improved on during the lesson. Less Learning Objectives Student/teacher activity Differentiation Resources Homework Assessment on 1 Task Analysis Expected: Some analysis of related products or systems undertaken. Using the mind map example complete by adding your own ideas and thoughts to it to extend the branches. Different to be given to to GAT and SEN or according to Design brief reading task Cloze Exercise for LA Collect pictures of Existing products for Good: Good understanding reading ability. use in next and analysis of the design lesson. NA context. Outstanding: Excellent understanding and analysis of the design context Cloze exercise to complete description of the brief. 2 Research Existing Products Beginner: Showing ability to analyse an existing MP3 player design, giving it a rating out of 10 or personal opinion. Developing: Can identify and explain why we look at existing products and what makes a good (or bad) design, analysing different styles Carry out research on 4 digital devices. It does not matter if they are dedicated to just playing Music. You need to describe: Material used, Colour, Shape, Functions, Size, Buttons, Screen, Product Name, Rating out of 10 (10 being good) Example work given to LA students Higher ability encouraged to use the Lit mats and Exam technique section. Evaluation of Spare if students fail to bring HW PP Examples of existing work to help students set out work. Levelled piece of work. Fluent: Be able to describe using technical terms what makes a good CD case just from looking at an image or existing product. products with a comparison will achieve level 7 3 Crating and Sketching Beginner: Draws out 6/8 basic freehand sketches of MP3 players, all based on one similar idea. One word annotations are around the outside. Developing: Draws out 8 freehand sketches, including some elements of basic 3D drawings and some creative ideas. Each design has some short annotations Fluent: Draws out 8 or more freehand 3D and 2D ideas showing imagination and creativity with detailed annotations/analysis around each design. Crating is a way of using construction lines to help you set out you work. The exercise on the PP (steps) shows the method used to complete the drawing. Have a go at adding the perspective to the drawings on the handout. Once you have completed the crating exercises you need to add tone to the drawing. Use the guide on the handout to help you add tone to your drawings. Challenge Can you add any shapes of your own to the sheet PP Crating and sketching Levelled work Crating Homework NA 4 Single Point Perspective Beginner All students will be able to recognise what single PP drawings look like. They will be able to identify the VP and draw basic 3d shapes. Perspective drawings use a number of points according to the view you wish to represent. They are used to show your client how your final product will look in reality. It has one vanishing Students will find this difficult. There is a drawing which is part completed. If they struggle they can use this as an underlay to PP Underlay Examples Assessed piece of work Basic Cube with assistance level 4 Independent development of

It can be used as a quick sketching method. get them started Add thick and thin lines to your drawing Add a light source and render your images taking into account light/medium/dar k tones. basic shapes FL5 Adaptaion of more complex shapes FL6 Curves and elipse using 3D crating FL7 5 Two Point Perspective Beginner All students will be able to recognise what single PP drawings look like. They will be able to identify the VP and draw basic 3d shapes. Developing Most will be able to adapt these shapes and add details to the cuboids. Fluet Some will be able to adapt Curves and circular development to their work. Two point perspective, although a little more complicated, produces the most realistic views of an object or product. There are two vanishing points sitting on either end of the horizon line. There are no horizontal lines and all non-vertical lines should go back to either of the vanishing points. Can show three view points depending on where the object is in relation to the horizon line. Students will need to produce a range of cuboid designs from different perspectives. 1P and 2P are the fundamentals of 3D drawing and design work. 6 Creating the 3D Shape for the MPS player Beginner: Plan out and shape your MP3 player using 1 point perspective Developing: Plan out and shape your MP3 player using 1 or 2 point perspective (2pp) using the grid to help) Fluent: Independently draw out and shape your MP3 player design carefully and accurately. Complete sketches in either 2point or 3point perspective or both Each student needs to produce 4 good 3D drawings of the MP3 player. There are grids available. The Fluent learners will be able to set out their own work and draw the MP3 players in different shapes and from different viewpoints above and below the horizon line. Any grid papers needed 1 and 2pp. A4 laminate to go under the page in the book. Levelled work NA 7 and 8 Design an MP3 Player in one of 4 different design styles Beginner: make notes on each design movement and understand at least one. Drawing out 1 design idea linking to these. Developing: Make detailed notes of each design movement and be able to explain what each one represents and Draws out 1 freehand sketches, including some elements of basic 3D drawings and some creative ideas. Each design has some short annotations Fluent: Write structured Design MP3 Players some in the style of one of 4 different design styles that we looked at last week Students to apply the design of one of the styles to their 3D dimensional drawing. This work will need to take into account tone and shade ( cross curricular with art) They will have help sheets to remind them of what the styles are. Writing assistance sheets to help them structure descriptions. Literacy mats can be used Writing frame to help with analysis Description of what an analysis means.
