The Challenge of the Month was won by Ted Evans with a beautiful and graceful looking earring holder. The club has three new members, welcome: Bruce Pharis and Joan Garron Riechers and Anita David Ralston and Anna-Maria

CUMBERLAND WOODTURNERS NOTES Wood of The Month Drue Hogland turned a spectacular painted vessel. Mike Elder is challenged to keep up the tradition next month with a piece of Osage Orange. We had 4 Visitors: Sean Fitzgerald, Edward Thornblade, Holly Hanson and Tom McDunn. Welcome all. Come on back. Meeting Minutes 1. Our incumbent president, Rod Smith called the February 2013 meeting somewhat to order. There were 28 members present. 2. The Ohio Valley Woodturners Symposium will be OCT 11-13 with a great cast of demonstrators. www.ovwg.org 3. A discussion was held on buying Liability insurance for the club, AAW is no longer supplying the insurance due to cost. It will be $425. The decision was made to put it to a vote next month. 4. Details about the Apple Festival are available at: CumberlandHomesteads.org/applefest 5. Hartville Tool will offer a discount to members and give some money back to the club at year s end. 5. The treasurer, Les Black reported an ending balance of $1807.53 6. The club was invited back to demonstrate at the 2013 Crossville Gun & Knife show on 3-4 August. We need demonstrators for 2 hour stretches. Contact Gil Buffkin to volunteer. 7. Club Logo Shirts: Contact Paul Kennedy. 8. The club needs volunteers to give demonstrations for: June, August, October and November. Volunteers are needed for refreshments for November. Contact Paul Kennedy. 9. On a sad note: Jim Bentley was diagnosed with Colon cancer and is being operated on. He is optimistic that it has not spread. Our best wishes to you, Jim and Muriel. There is a Powermatic lathe listed on ebay for $2250 in Atlanta if interested Safety Notes Safety Tip for making a hollow vessel: stop and remove the chips from the interior often to prevent the tool from catching.

Jim Greenwood s Demonstration on Making a Hollow Lidded Vessel. Jim demonstrated how he makes his terrific hollow forms. He chucked up a piece of wood up and turned the body of the piece, hollowing it with a fostner bit and his home made hollowing tool. He next turned a collar ring to add stability and size the opening. He glued the ring to the opening. Jim next turned a lid with a recess for the finial and then re-mounted the assembly with a chuck and the tailstock to fair the ring and lid in. He then reverse chucked the piece on a jam chuck and tailstock to finish the base. He then turned the finial in five seconds (it seemed like it) Demonstrating his great expertise and finished the piece. Have fun.
