Rotary is Service Above Self Family Ties It was Monday, May 17, 2010, and the always cuddly President Jan Rhees let District Conference attendees Tom Jeffry, Russ Samuels, Roger Cox, Dave Boochever, and LJ the DJ embarrass themselves with some truly lame dancing to the familiar strains of We Are Family. While I basked in memories of Willie Stargell and Sister Sledge, we heard about an array of family honors awarded to us by the District community service, membership, international, public relations, club service and vocational, to name a few. Russ Samuels managed to win the Kiwi gift pack at the silent auction, a set of dime-store souvenirs which he passed off to Roger Cox as sacred Maori artifacts. LJ then reminded us that we make a difference when we show up. Showing that our members in fact do keep showing up, an emotional Dennis Morehead told us about the presentation made by Dave Boochever and himself of 16 Rotary scholarships for El Camino students, matched by Katie Gleeson s El Camino College Foundation. Hands Across The Water It was a day for our family to go international. Former member Karin Rosskopf is in town this week she s the incoming (and first) president of a new German Rotary Club..The Russians Are Coming, hosted by John Van den Akker with a host of helpers Dan Saks housing one of the five guests; President Jan and International Director Donn Ennis overseeing things; Kent Caldwell organizing volleyball on the beach; Paul Allman and Richard Chase participating in panels; Bill Bloomfield and Jim Hunter giving a party; Rich Montgomery involving the City; and Russian-speaking Alex Yoffe helping interpret the overall theme of Accountable Governance. John s son, Chris, also speaks Russian, and will be helping out while he organizes his own upcoming trip to Russia. You can jump into the itinerary any day by checking the club website..model United Nations: Interact Co- Presidents Casey Harless and Patrick Dexter thanked us for sponsoring their trip to the Georgetown competition, where perennial powerhouse Mira Costa snagged awards in 15 of 18 competitions (40 students went). They also thanked us for sponsoring six Interactors who went with Vinny Fazzino to the Casa Hogar orphanage in Ensenada.

More Hands Across The Water Carine Allaf, a District 5280 Ambassadorial Scholar and UCLA PhD candidate (defending her dissertation this very day), told us of her year abroad in Jordan. Born in Lebanon and raised in Kuwait, she already knew the lay of the land. Sponsored here by the Westwood Village Club (cf. Bill Bloomfield, Peggy Bloomfield, Aliyah Levin) and hosted there by Petra s Rotary Club, Carine shared slides of Amman, Jerash (ruins), Wadi Mujib (scenic canyon), and Yarmouk University in Irbid. She interned with UNICEF, researching the impact of Iraqi refugees in Jordan. She went on to work as a program development manager with Save the Children in Kurdistan (northern Iraq) and Basra (southern Iraq). One morning s breakfast accordingly covered New Zealand, Germany, Russia, Mexico, Asia, Jordan, Iraq, the entire United Nations, even the Pittsburgh Pirates. We do indeed make a difference when we show up. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
