Owlie Size Women s S (M, L) Cuff Circumfrence: 5 (6, 7 ) relaxed - 10 (12, 13 )stretched Gauge 28 sts/42 rows = 4 in stockinette Skill Level: Advanced beginner Materials Fingering Weight, approximately 400 yards. Sample was knit with The March Hare Superwash Sock (75% superwash merino/25% nylon) US 2 (2.75mm) and US 1.5 (2.5mm) 32 40 Circular needle or size to obtain gauge 80 size 6/0 beads (3.3 mm) (this is the amount needed for beading all of the owls, if you don t all of your owls eyes, you will need less) Crochet hook size 11 or Oral B Superfloss Stitch markers (optional) Cable needle (optional) Tapestry needle Learn how to add beads with a crochet hook here. Learn how to do Cable2Back (Right twist) and Cable2Front (Left twist) without a cable needle here. Instructions are written for magic loop but can be easily adapted for DPNs or 2 circs. Directions Cuff With larger needle and using a stretchy cast-on, cast on 56 (64, 72) sts. Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Work cuff chart 4 times. Leg Change to smaller needle. Work leg/instep chart 2-3 times. Each repeat of the Owlie motif is approximately 2. Two repeats of the leg chart plus the cuff will give you a 6 leg. Three repeats plus the cuff will give you an 8 leg. If you choose not to use the beads, just knit that stitch. For Private Use Only Page 1

Heel Flap *NOTE* Remember stitches are reversed when working WS rows (Knit stitches are purled, purled stitches are knit) see Key for more information. Place next 28 (32, 36) sts on hold for instep. Work heel flap on rem 28 (32, 36) sts. Turn work so WS is facing you. Work rows 1-24 of Heel Flap chart. Continue working in stockinette stitch until heel flap measures 2.25 2.5 (5.5-6.5 cm), or desired length, ending after a WS row. Alternate Plain Heel Flap Place next 28 (32, 36) on hold for instep. Work heel flap on rem 28 (32, 36) sts. Turn work so WS is facing you. ROW 1: Sl 1, P27 (31, 35), turn. ROW 2: [Sl 1, K1]. Repeat to end of row, ending with K1, turn. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until heel flap measures 2.25 2.5 (5.5-6.5 cm), or desired length, ending after Row 1. Turn Heel Work short rows to shape heel. ROW 1: (RS) Sl 1, K14 (16, 20), ssk, k1, turn. ROW 2: Sl 1, p3(5, 7), p2tog, p1, turn. ROW 3: Sl, knit to 1 st before gap created on previous row, ssk, k1, turn. ROW 4: Sl 1, purl to 1 st before gap created on previous row, p2tog, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked, ending with row 3. Sl 1, purl to end of row. 16(19, 21) heel sts remain. Shape Gussets SET-UP RND: Sl 1, k7 (9, 10), PM for beginning of round, k8 (9, 10), pick up & knit 1 st in each slip st along edge of heel flap, plus 1 st between heel flap & instep. PM, continue in pattern, beginning with row 1 of leg/instep chart over 28 (32, 36) instep sts, PM. Pick up & knit 1 st between instep and heel flap and 1 st in each slip st along edge of heel flap, k8(10, 11). RND 1: Knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker. Continue in pattern over instep stitches, slip marker, K1, ssk, knit to end of round. 2 sts decreased. RND 2: Knit foot sts, slip marker, continue in pattern over instep sts, slip marker, knit to end of round. Repeat Rnds 1 & 2 until 56 (64, 72) sts remain. FOOT Remove beginning of round marker, K to next marker. This is now the beginning of round. Redistribute stitches so that instep stitches are on one needle and foot stitches are on the other. Continue working instep stitches in pattern and bottom of foot in stockinette until foot is approximately 2 (2.5, 3 ) less than desired length, ending with row 9, 17 or 21 of leg chart. TOE Work the Toe Transition Chart over the instep stitches and continue in stockinette on the remaining sts. RND 1: Work Toe Chart over instep stitches, slip marker, K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts before marker, k2tog, K1. RND 2: Work Toe Chart, slip marker, knit to end of round. Repeat these two rounds until 8 sts remain on each needle (16 total sts). Graft toe closed. For Private Use Only Page 2
