ARTS 106: Photography I Shaker Heights High School Instructor: Kathleen Fleming Phone: (216) 295-4200 ext 6250 email: fleming_k@shaker.org 2015-2016 CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES WELCOME! Photography Class will be an exciting and artistic way to express your creativity both visually and in writing. I expect you to be prepared and ready to create photographs every day. This course is the second level of digital photography. You will increase your knowledge and understanding of the digital camera s functions and operations. Assignments will be completed and edited using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Projects will be an expression of your own creative expression. Your body of work will demonstrate technical skills learned from lectures and the course book, A Short Course in Digital Photography, by Barbara London and Jim Stone, Prentice Hall. We will have at least two sets of critiques per project. In progress critiques will be given while an assignment is in the early stages of completion. These critiques will help you explore other avenues of the creative process that you may not have thought of. A final critique will be at the end of the project and participation is mandatory. You should be able to use photography and art terminology while discussing other students photographs. TEXT AND READINGS KAP STUDENTS A Short Course in Digital Photography, by Barbara London and Jim Stone, Prentice Hall SUPPLIES You will need a camera that has manual settings (aperture, shutter priority, ISO, white balance (WB). I have a few cameras to lend out, but they must be returned the following day. If you sign out a camera YOU are responsible for the camera. If something happens to the camera on your watch you will be charged for the camera, batteries, and bag You will also need:

SD card minimum 4gb USB Drive for photography, minimum 4 GB storage, to back up all of your work. The server gets full so you must back up your work. Pen or pencil Folder for handouts and to keep track of your assignments Note: Prints, portfolio, and process journal (PJ) are part of your Photography fee. CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT The computers and photography equipment must be respected. Do not put trash in the computer towers. We are fortunate to have a wonderful lab/equipment/studio. We will use Adobe Creative Cloud programs to edit your photographs. PROCEDURES You will have to save all photograph files as jpegs. We will not have enough space for RAW files unless you are told otherwise. Photographs will be saved as a 4 x6 or 6 x4 Jpeg 300 resolution, unless told otherwise. Label your work: last, first name, period, project, title I make print runs printing 500 at a time. I can sort them faster when you label them correctly. TURN-IN DATES It is in important you turn your work in on time. You may not receive a zero for any assignment. All assignments must be turned in even if late. For late assignments: Print a wallet size picture, writing your name and date on the printout. Put this printout in the black box near the printer Put your late project in the digital late folder.

PROJECT DUE DATES When you turn in your project it must be completed. You will place the finished project saved and labeled correctly in the turn-in folder on the server. You will not have class time to finish projects on critique days unless otherwise stated. Printing: I print all photographs at Costco. This is part of your printing fee. If you turn photographs in late I will still print them, but you will have to wait until the next print run for your prints. Portfolio: You will put your photographs in a portfolio. Make sure you label each section of the photographs. Process Journal (PJ): You will be given prompts for journal entries. This is a great tool to use to write down your thoughts and reflections. GRADING Scale: 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59 and below F Projects: 50 points -100 points PJ: included in the project grade Making the Deadline: 15 points Portfolio Check, Labeling and Organization: 2 points a project Critiques: 10 points THE BASICS RESPECT, RESPECT, RESPECT!
