Digital Photography Computer Lab/Room 231 Pleasantville High School Beginning & Advanced Levels Mrs. M.L. Bonforte 1/2 credit: 1 semester Course Description Beginning students will be introduced to photography as an art form using Photoshop software. Students will learn how to Digital SLR camera and take well composed pictures based in part on the principles and elements of design and gain knowledge of shutter speed and aperture settings. Exposure to important photographers who express commentary, document events, describe a personality, tell a story, or make the viewer think is an important component to the course at all levels. Frequent critiques are used to help students develop a sensitive and critical eye to their own work and to the work of others. Advanced students will continue to hone their skills and to become creative in their photography approach through study of famous photographers, specific assignments and/or subjects of special interest. Because classes are often mixed levels, advanced level students are expected to share new discoveries, to participate in helping beginning students, and to explore Photoshop and other programs in greater depth. A concentration that is skillfully presented may be stressed with some students. Beautiful and interesting mounted works will be made by all students for exhibition and a college portfolio. Classroom Expectations / Requirements I. Camera: Students must supply a (digital) DSLR camera. There is a limited number of contracted DSLR cameras available through our photography program on a first come first served basis for the semester. A camera case is also important to protect your camera when not in use. Digital SLR cameras are available at the following locations: Sam s Camera Exchange PhotoWorks 195 North Bedford Road 60 Washington Ave. Mt. Kisco (across from Jean Jacques) Pleasantville B&H Photo in NYC is another good place to get what you need. It takes orders by phone or via its web site. Shipping is quick. It is worth going down to

Manhattan to the actual store just to see such an unusual place of business that is also a cultural experience. B&H 420 Ninth Avenue New York, NY Between 33 rd & 34 th Streets 1 (800) I. Please have computer use forms in at the beginning of the school year. You may not use anybody else s account for any reason! II. Know your camera! Reading your camera manual is a must to learn about its features. If you don t have the manual for your camera, doing an online search will likely result in finding what you need. Familiarize yourself well with its capabilities. Photographs on digital cameras must be taken as fine jpegs. On some newer cameras, the normal jpeg setting may be needed. This will be discussed in class. Digital camera software may not be installed on school computers. In order for images to be useable, a portable external USB storage device is needed to transfer images. Digitally taken pictures must be submitted on a USB labeled with your name for evaluation purposes. Please backup all your digital photos and keep in a separate location on your home computer or a second external device. Digitally taken photos must be organized in weekly folders and labeled with the due date, for example III. Required Supplies that you are to supply on your own: 1. Memory card and a battery charger. An extra memory card and a second battery are strongly recommended. 2. A protective UV filter for the camera lens. 3. Camera strap and case for all cameras. 4. A photography dedicated USB portable storage device labeled with your name 8 GB minimum for all students, preferably more. 5. A two pocket folder for a three ring binder for handouts. 6. Pen or pencil. Your cameras and supplies are your responsibility and should never be left in the computer lab. Take them with you. Put your name on everything! IV. Journal: Journal notes are a record of beginning camera notes and of what you do day by day, week to week, and offer an opportunity to express successes, failures, photographer research, thoughts & ideas. Also, notes on videos, presentations, articles, famous photographer quotes, photographs with

descriptions, and software tutorials may be included. Entries are to be made regularly and dated. Journals are written in your own words and are due on the last day of each month or other designated time. Hand in on your USB. V. There is also a mid semester project on a photographer and an end semester project to be announced. More projects will be assigned as time allows. VI. Unless there is a school validated reason, you are expected to be in class, arrive on time, and be ready to work. Please keep requests to leave the room to an absolute minimum. Passes will not be signed or written during the presentation of a lesson. You are responsible for finding out what you have missed during any absence from class. Also when late, all students are responsible for returning to class with a pass from a school staff member. VII. It is imperative that the computer lab be left in good order before leaving. Chairs are to be pushed in at the end of class. Care and respect for computer equipment is a must. Food and beverages of any sort are not permitted. VIII. Local field trip permission form (attached) is expected to be on classroom file for outdoor shoots that may be off school grounds but in the immediate neighborhood. Extra help or extra time is given during the Activity Period or another mutually agreed upon time. X. Teacher evaluation of each student in general terms is made from the following: *Portfolio that is shown mid quarter and at the end of quarter. Your portfolio includes enlargements and the photos you take. Once picture taking begins, jpeg images on a USB are handed in weekly and graded. Photos taken before July 1, 2015 are not accepted, and only your first set may include such photos. All photos taken thereafter must be current. *Grading is determined according to each student s level and the particular requirements for a quarter. Level 1: In general, student portfolios count for the largest percentage. However, beginning students won t have a developed portfolio by the end of the first/third quarter. Camera notes, photos that demonstrate knowledge of how to use a DSLR camera and at least 6 well composed images are worth 70% of the first/third quarter grade. 5 sets of 45 digital fine jpeg images are required for second/fourth quarter.

Level 2: The portfolio consists of 5 sets of 45 fine jpeg images. 10 or more perfected photos are due for each quarter. Projects will be assigned. All students: *Film/Fine Jpeg Portfolio - 30% *Final Photo Enlargement Portfolio 30% *Projects/journals/ photographer presentation 30% *Class participation 10% *Students will receive more specific information regarding level requirements. *Requirements are posted each quarter with due dates on the high school website under the Visual Arts section, and are subject to change as needed. Progress Reports will be posted on eschool to notify parents of commendable or unsatisfactory work at mid marking period. Parents/guardians are encouraged to leave me a phone message or addressing any concerns. I will respond as soon as possible. In turn I will contact parents/guardians when I have my own concerns. Students who have questions about a grade are asked to see me privately. Final Note to Students: I want each and all of you to have fun in a good way and to enjoy the time you are in Digital Photography. Learning to create digital images through photography takes patience, effort, time, creativity, and skill. Make the most of your experience here, and please see me if any problem or concern should arise.

Parents/Guardians and students, please fill out information below & return by Tuesday, September 8 th. Thank you. Digital Photography, Period Student and Parent/Guardian Statement: We have read the preceding Digital Photography requirements and understand what is expected.
