Session A Painting Instructor: Veronica Gelbaum TA: Jacob Stutz In our painting class, we will focus on painting from observed experience, in order to broaden our understanding of the medium. We will cover fundamentals such as color mixing, paint handling, proper use of materials, and histories of painting; as well as more self directed free form projects. In class, there is a good amount of self motivated studio time, with prompts given as a guideline. Our goal is that you make college level work for your portfolios, and begin the process of becoming independent in this medium. Evaluation (Pass/No Pass grade): 60% Attendance and Participation 20% Projects completed in the first week 20% Projects completed in the second week Monday July 9 th 9:00 10:00: Check in, introduction to the program and short tour of campus 10:00 11:00 Tour of studio and building facilities, review rules, Lab Supervisors give demonstrations 11:00-12:00 Introduction to the clas. Review the syllabus, review materials kit, and clean up procedure., students get Bruin Cards, and any needed materials. 1:15-1:30. Ice breaker activity! 1:30-2:00 Brief presentation on painting practices, color in art history. Color mixing exercise and demonstration to follow. 2:00-3:30 In class assignment, replicating a historical painting from observation using only chromatic blacks and whites. 3:30-3:45 Snack break with complimentary snacks! Homework: Short reading, take notes to discuss in class. Tuesday July 10 th 9:00-10:30 Discussion of reading and in class assignments.

10:30-12:00 In class painting from a still life set up, with objects brought from home. Timed Short Paintings. 1:15-2:00 Presentation of painting practices. 2:30 onward: Longer form painting painting from the still life set up. 3:30-3:45 Snack Break! 3:45-5:30 Continue studio work. Homework: Do three (or more) quick gesture or blind contour drawings from observation at home. Wednesday July 11 th (LATE STUDIO NIGHT) 9:00-10:00 Morning discussion of the homework assignment. 10:00-12:00 Self directed life paintings from a set up in class. 1:15 2:15 Artist Talk- TBA (all students attend in Public Affairs 1222) 3:30-3:45 snack break! Return to classroom. 4:00-4:45 Plein air painting in the sculpture garden with canva-paper pads. 4:45-5:15 Dinner/Snack Break 5:15-7:00 Studio time. Continue plein air painting using casvasboards. Thursday July 12 th 9:00-11:50 Painting practices presentation. Group discussion of work.

1:15 Meet at Broad Lawn to prepare for Museum Trip 1:15 4:00 Museum Trip to Getty Center (all students attend). Museum assignment: bring field sketchbooks to museum abd sketch paintings from life, as well as take notes on all artist information. 4:00 5:30 Return from Getty, complete museum assignment in studio. If ahead of schedule do quick paintings from memory. Homework: Continue museum work. 5-10 Sketches influenced by our trip and observations at the museum. Short reading, takes notes to discuss in class. Friday July 13 th 9:00-10:30 Contemporary Practices Presentation. We will deal with different areas of abstraction, representation, painting after performance, language in art, etc. Discussion of final project assignment. Such as: do three paintings of different intensity levels, of the same subject. Details to follow during class. Begin sketching out ideas, share books, and individual meetings. 10:30-12:00. Visit arts library as a class. Everyone to find a book about an artist that captures their imagination, to check out and bring back to the classroom. 1:15-3:30 Life drawing and painting based on library visit, format variable. 4:15-4:30 Snack break! 4:30-5:30 Art Movie Screening in Auditorium. All students attend.

Weekend Homework: Come up with a proposal for final project. This should include sketches, a few sentences, and any other supplemental materials (books, print outs, or other inspiration). Proposals to be presented to me individually on Monday. Monday July 16 th 9:00-12:00 Prepare surfaces for final project. Canvas stretching demo. Individual meetings about final projects. Begin Work. Individual meetings. 1:15-3:30 Begin in class work on final projects. Individual meetings continue. 3:30-3:45 Snack time! 3:45-5:30 Continue working on final projects. Tuesday July 17 th 9:00-11:00 Continue work of final projects. 11:00-12:00 Quick presentation about installation and the role of the museum/ art and the museum. 1:30-3:30 Hammer Museum Field Trip, all students attend. Museum assignment. Find work that pertains to your final project, sketch from love abd take notes on all artist information. To discuss in class. 3:30-3:45 Snack! 3:45-5:30 Continue museum work, drawing and painting. Homework: Write about what you would do differently in past paintings. Be as specific as possible. Wednesday July 18th

LATE STUDIO NIGHT! 9:00-10:00 Warm up drawing (still life set up, gesture, blind contour, collage, and more). OR class time for final project. 11:00 12:00 Artist Talk by Instructors (all students attend in Public Affairs 1222) 12:00 1:15 Lunch (12:00-12:20 Caron s info session about undergraduate admission at UCLA (optional)) 1:15 2:00 Ben and Valerie give demos about installing and documenting artwork 2:00-4:45 Studio time. 4:45 5:15: Dinner / Snack Break 5:15 7:00: Continue final sprint, and install work for critiques. Thursday July 19 th 9:00 onward: Discussion of critique ettiquite. Begin final critiques with guest critic 12:00-1:15 lunch 1:15 continue critiques. 3:30-3:45 Snack time! 3:45-5:00 Final Studio Clean-Up, preparation of wall labels, packing up, etc. 5:00-5:30 class celebration! Friday July 20 th Residential Students check out from housing halls and stow luggage before class

9:00 12:00 Bring artwork to gallery, install exhibition, Install 12:00 1:15 Lunch 1:15 2:00 Pack artwork to be shipped home.* 2:00 3:30 Final Reception held at New Wight Gallery all students, parents / guardians, faculty, staff and friends are welcome to attend! (Please note, student attendance is mandatory). * Students who wish to ship their artwork home will be responsible for all shipping costs and must provide shipping slips and an authorized method of payment. Instructors and TAs will help students pack-up their artworks and will facilitate the shipping process.
