PAGI!S This repor describes he laes esimae from Ames Research Cener (ARC) of he magneomeer power profile. Alhough his profile is in violaion of he inerface conrol specificaion IC 314103 released 1 June 1966, i is apparenly a fac of life if he magneomeer is o perform according o he design and performance specificaion prepared by he PI. ARC plans o deliver an Engineering Model having his ou of spec. power profileo Prepared By: /l j. Pa,Ju-1. Everee Parker Approved By: Dye

BIMDIX SYSTIMS DIVISION ANN ARBOR, MICH. 6-24-66 Magneomeer Experimen Power Profile 2 Of REV. NO. 5 PAGES Figure I gives a general ime hisory for he magneomeer, showing approximaely when he magneomeer is in is various modes or sequences. The scienific mode is ha mode in which he magneomeer is making vecor magneic field inensiy measuremens. The sie survey mode is ha mode in which he magneomeer is making a magneic field gradien measuremen. The flip/ calibrae cycle is a shor duraion sequence during which he magneomeer makes an end -o-end calibraion of is elf. As seen in Figure 1, he sie survey mode is a one sho sequence which occurs very early in he mission. The flip/ cal sequence is iniiaed auomaically by he ALSEP daa S/S every 12 hours or by ground command on an as necessary basis. Ground command iniiaion of his flip/ cal sequence will probably occur every few hours during lunar sun rise and sunse when he insrumen emperaure is changing a a raher rapid rae. The design arge power profile for each mode is shown in Figure 2. 3. 5 was are required during lunar day for he scienific mode. This represens he "normal operaing 11 power. An addiional wa ( 4. 5 was oal) is required for hermal conrol during lunar nigh. During he flip/ cal cycle an addiional 0. 1 was is required during he elecronic calibraion sequence on eiher side of he 7. 0 wa peak required for flipping. A lunar nigh he 1. 0 wa hermal conrol power is swiched off during he flip/ cal sequence. Since he sie survey occurs during lunar day he baseline power is jus 3. 5 was. During he sie survey he profile sequence shown in Figure 2 is repeaed 3 separae imes. The spacing beween each will probably be of he order of several minues bu could be up o several hours. I will be noed ha he peak power during his sequence is 7. 5 was. The magneomeer will be deployed in he scienific mode. The sie survey sequence associaed wih each axis will be iniiaed by a single command. Upon receiving his command he magneomeer will auomaically cycle hrough he various seps shown by changes in he power level. The same is rue wih he flip/ cal cycle i.e., upon receip of a command he insrumen auomaically runs hrough he elecronic calibraion, flips, hen repeas he calibraion sequence. Thus he peak power in each of hese wo modes occurs abou 5 minues afer he iniiaing command is given. As of 9 June 1966 he esimaed operaing power was 3. 8 was or 0. 3 was over he arge value. Also he nigh ime arge power of 4. 5 was is 1. 0 was and he 7. 5 wa peak (sie survey) is 0. 5 was above he ICS values.

n 6-24-66 I U f 11 I IINDIX SYSTIMS DIVISION ANN ARIOI, MICH. Magenomeer Experimen Power Profile NO. ATM-338 PAGI 3 Ofl REV. NO. 5 PAGIS Alhough backed by lile or no analysis by he magneomeer P. E., i is his considered opinion ha here is lile hope in reducing hese arge power values wihou requiring changes in he design and performance specificaion of his insrumen. Presen planning by ARC calls for delivering an engineering model wih an ou of spec. power profile. As a resul of his power problem he Sysems Engineering Group mus deermine he feasibiliy of, and condiions under which addiional power can be supplied o he magneomeer. Also, in order o avoid any scheduling problems wih he developmen of his insrumen his deerminaion should be made prior o he engineering model release which is presenly scheduled for abou he hird week in July.
