Newsletter: June, 2014 President s Message Debbie Strobel Last night s meeting was an interesting exercise in mixing pastel colors. I must admit that I almost never try to mix colors. My first thought is to just buy another stick of pastel! Lois exercise made me think about trying mixing instead. The small charts we made will be useful for seeing the possibilities of mixing. The Garvan Gardens show has come down and we will be preparing for our next show at Community Bakery. This is open to all members and there is no entry fee. It will be put up on Sunday, August 3 rd, so you will not be able to deliver your painting to a meeting since we will not meet in July. Sister Maria is in charge of this show and will be sending out instructions through our Google Group and our Facebook page. Remember that any painting put at Community Bakery will not be down in time for the Juried Show that starts October 1 st. Speaking of the Juried Show, things are moving along and the online registration will be up very soon. Since our membership is not that large, and the Cox Center has a large gallery, there is an excellent chance that you can get one or both of your paintings in the show. This would give you 2 points toward Signature Membership, and more if you win one of the top awards! The deadline for entering is August 1 st, less than two months away. So start working on something for the show now!!! In sad news, it was just announced that Starving Artist Café has closed its doors. I will personally miss that restaurant very much. It was a wonderful combination of restaurant and art gallery. I am hoping that someone will make an attempt to get it open again in the future. Remember: No meeting in July!!! Enjoy your summer and take your vacations, then be ready to meet again in August!

Our monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 PM in the Arkla Room of the Center for Health Education Building of St. Vincent s Hospital. If you need directions, go to http://www.arkpastel.com/contact-us and click on the link. Note: - we do not meet in July. June Program Lois Davis Lois challenged us to build our pastel palette by making many colors from a few, and by making multiple values from one color. Two exercises challenged us - to say the least! Lois's Samples: Lois leading the exercise

Getting Down to Work!

Mini Workshop You won t want to miss this one! Use of Your I Pad or Tablet in Pastel Composition Tom Herrin will be conducting a mini workshop August 16, 2014, 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM Location: Butler Center, Little Rock AR Donation: $20 (APS) See the enrollment form at the back of the newsletter for additional details. Other Workshops The Degas Pastel Society will sponsor a three-day Margaret Dyer figure workshop to be held at David Art Center, 3020 N. Arnoult Road, in Metairie, LA. The workshop will be October 29-31, 2014, and the cost for non-degas members is $400. For more information, contact Darlene Johnson at (504) 392-0215, email darlenehjohnson@yahoo.com or go to the Degas Pastel Society website www.degaspastelsociety.org. The Pastel Society of the Southwest will also host a Margaret Dyer workshop, "Exploring Value", to be held in Grapevine, Texas on November 3-5, 2014. More details can be found on the website www.pssw.info. Contact Marie Maines for registration, rm_maines@hotmail.com. Shows & Exhibits Community Bakery Exhibit Sr. Maria Liebeck and Tom Herrin Get ready for the Community Bakery Exhibit coming up in August. The dates for the Exhibit are August 3, 2014 to October 4, 2014. Members may enter 2 or 3 paintings. Paintings must be dropped off at Community Bakery on Sunday, August 3rd between 3-5 PM There is no commission on the sale of artwork. Buyers will contact the artist directly. Please be sure your paintings are hung using wire hangers. Paintings cannot be removed until the show is over. This is a great opportunity to show and sell your work! Please Note: Paintings in this exhibit may not be entered in the APS juried show at the Cox Center in October. If you have any questions, contact Tom Herrin at 501-519-0653 Garvan Woodland Gardens Show Sheliah Halderman Sheliah reported that the next show at Garvan Gardens will be in the Fall 2015.

APS Juried Show The website is now up. Go to: http://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/ and scroll down to find our show. Click on the show and it will pull up all of the important information including the calendar for the show, eligibility requirements, how to enter, delivery and return of accepted entries and limitations of liability, and information about Lyuba Bogan, the Juror. Announcements: Babs Stewart's Ice House pastel was featured on the front page of the Hillcrest Residents Newsletter, Spring Edition. Congratulations, Babs! Shirley Anderson had two paintings juried by Albert Handell into the Pastel Society of Colorado National Juried Exhibit in Denver, CO. Congratulations, Shirley! Mary Ann Stafford is exhibiting five floral paintings at the Rep in June: watercolors, acrylic and pastels. Tom Herrin will be teaching watercolor classes at the Art Center this Summer. His Wednesday evening class is scheduled for 6:00pm-9:00pm. He will also teach a four week work shop titled "Watercolor Fast and Easy". If you are looking for something to stimulate your creative side please consider one of his classes. Please check the Arkansas Arts Center website for details and for registration in any of the classes available.
