VP Command Warnings, Unpriced Items, Asterisks, and Other There are various reasons why you may see asterisks (*) on your VP Command Pricing Report and nearly as many possible solutions. The building s geometry and loading are the most obvious causes and often easily resolved. Understanding the cause is important to finding a solution. 1

Category Loading Upper Load Limits: Seismic Soil Profile F Live Load > 100 psf Ground Snow Load > 100 psf Wind Speed > 130 mph Wind Pressure > 30 psf Collateral Gravity > 20 psf Warnings are generated as shown when leaving the Loads and Codes Screen if excessive environmental load(s) are entered. Extreme surface loading may result in incomplete panel as well as secondary design that have to be manually addressed by designers. VPC checks panel design using published test results based on limited test parameters that may not account for all loading conditions Point Loads Point Loads > 50 kips applied on any frame segment/side generates a Load Warning. The Warning occurs after clicking OK from the load list screen as shown. Note: 50 kips is not an unusually high load magnitude for mezzanines and this warning can be expected while user loading for a typical mezzanine. Loading Loading Framing Frame Status set to IA - Frame not Priced at 25/0/0 Loading: Check if the building code supports wind loading for buildings over a reference height of 60'. If not, 95ASCE wind loading procedures are used. The message, "NUMBER OF POINT LOADS = 30000 GREATER THAN 30000 - DECREASE NUMBER OF POINT LOADS OR LOAD CASES" is seen typically on open web frames; however, it can also occur on solid web frames, particularly on a file with several crane aisles. You will need to decrease the number of load cases. The clue that you are experiencing this known warning is when your VPC file just stops running and closes down automatically. This above message is found at the end or bottom of the frame.prt file. Required wind speeds may be higher than the VPC enforced minimums depending on the building use Risk Category. The designer must ensure the appropriate minimum wind loading is used. IA means Interactive Frame design required. The VPC file must be transferred via Project Interface Manager (PIM) for VP designers to 2

along Wall 4 of Shape: main interact with the program to design the frames. There are various parameters outlined in VP Command that will set the design status to IA. These include: Rigid Frame (RF): o Rafter span > 180-0 o Rafter segment > 90-0 Continuous Beam (CB): o Rafter span > 150-0 o Interior column to ridge location > 150-0 Lean-to (Solid Web) spans: o rafter span > 70-0 CB Lean-to (Solid Web) spans: o total rafter span > 150-0 o rafter span between interior columns > 150-0 Lean-to (Truss, Open Web): > 240-0. Note that IA Frame will not support this also Unibeam (Solid Web): o rafter span. 70-0 o rafter segment > 35-0 Truss Beam (Open Web): o rafter span.140-0 o rafter segment > 70-0 Tips for Using IA Frame: Even though VP Command auto design may produce a frame design and price, IA Frame design can sometimes help achieve a more economical price. Rigid Frames: o 120-0 for 12 psf gravity loads o 100-0 for 20 psf gravity loads o 80-0 for higher gravity loads (> 20 psf) Continuous Beams: o Interior Column space > 70-0 o Eave Height > 30-0 o Frame Drift < H/100 CT- and Wind Bent (Clear Span Open Web Frame): o Auto Design runs to a maximum of 84 depth then iterates T-Section sizes Miscellaneous Frame Design Frame Design: Bar Joist- checks frame rafter for flanges < 6" Frame Design "Yield Overrides": Web, Flange, Truss, and Gage. (by frame description) Flag if flange or bolting plate blows (identified by plate thickness, width, or length = 0.0, bolt count=0, bolt dia.= 0.0, or rows in/out=999/0) Check Minimum Edge Distance. Check available weld on a truss lattice Check for single lattice when the truss stem thickness exceeds the notch in the angle. Check if bracket flange exceeds column flange width Crane Miscellaneous Crane The Warning message is generated immediately after a crane is created in the Crane Schedule if either: Capacity exceeds 20 Ton Service Class exceeds C Check Bracket length exceeds 22 inch for column mounted or 12 inch for rafter Check Bracket length max load exceeds 55 kips for column 46 kips for rafter Check if Bracket attached to tube or gage Check if bracket flange exceeds column flange width Bracing Non-standard primer color Standard Color found. Secondary Miscellaneous Secondary Design main : Roof A Secondary not Priced on Roof A in Shape: main located at: Secondary 08Z28114##A5B0 at -1'-6 11/16" From 1/4" To 25'-0" Secondary Design: Bar Joist- looks for PR Roof attaching to Bar Joist Secondary Outside and Inside Flange overrides, All Wall/Roof and member level Check user Flag - Modify Secondary Spacing per Panel Design There may be numerous reasons as to why secondary does not price. Mainly, the secondary member is overstressed (carrying more load than it is able to). Each secondary member is designed for the load it is expected to carry (then secondary grouping takes place to minimize the varying mark numbers). Consider the tributary area (half the distance to the secondary s adjacent members; for example, in a typical 5-0 purlin space, the tributary is 5-0 multiplied by the bay distance [for a 25-0 bay the area is 5ft x 25ft = 125 sq.ft.]). Covering Design warehouse : Roof A The input wind loading was 180mph, exposure C. VPC gave a message Wind Speed greater than 170.10mph (see below). Seek VP Service 5

The following has a zero price Mark=DHC0304417, Mfg=GPS, Qty=0.0000, Item Number=2300235, Finish Galvanized, Color G=30 Galvanized The Following could not be found in reference: Mark=00208DS14112##, MfgType=GCD08, Item Number=0 Finish = Standard Primer, Color=Gray Secondary manufacturing : Roof A Check Anchorage on Shape: manufacturing - Roof:A manufacturing : Roof B Check Anchorage on Shape: manufacturing - Roof:B Typically purlins have a tendency to roll upslope and that force is too great to be resisted by panel diaphragm or our torsional/lateral restraint system, then purlins can be rotated or flipped in their orientation to counter the upslope rolling force. With steeper roof pitches and higher gravity loading, the purlins may want to roll downslope, then additional AR (anti-roll) clips need to be added to the frame lines at purlin locations to stiffen the roof system from rolling downslope. See screen shots of the frame x-sections showing purlin orientation and secondary design reports before and after flipping two purlins; purlins are flipped at Secondary / Spaces / (Shape Name) / Roof A / Default Spaces / Prop / Options. Note: for higher roof pitches where down-slope roll is the issue, the fix can be quite a bit more involved, hence the need for sending the file in for Engineering assistance. Call your service center for assistance. 6

Covering Design Miscellaneous Covering Design Covering Design main : Roof A Non-std Spacing: 4/3/0 Required for Snow Drift Panels on Roof A of main, System DID NOT modify spacing. main : Roof B Non-std Spacing: 4/3/0 Required for Snow Drift Panels on Roof B of main, System DID NOT modify spacing. Cover Design: Check if Panels at Wall/Roof could not be designed In this example the purlin spacing has been reduced to 2-6 on center due to the required purling design. Covering Design has decided that the roof panels cannot span the distance under the loads, but are missing the fact that the spacing has already been reduced. As long as your spacing is less than or equal to the noted ft/in/16 th required for Snow Drift Panels the message is purely informational. If not, you need to reduce the purling spacing in the noted area. 7
