LIVE LOVE SEW PATTERN CO. BASKET WEAVE #127 50 x 84

QUILT STATS: BASKET WEAVE Finished Quilt: 50 x 84 Finished Block: 6 x 6 MATERIALS: (1x) Rollie Pollie (Sweet Prairie Fabric) 1 ½ yards Solid Fabric (Background) 3 ½ yards Print Fabric (Backing) ½ yard Print Fabric (Binding) Bamboo/Cotton Batting (at least 60 x 95 ) FQ = Fat Quarter * FQ s measure 18 x 21 F8 = Fat Eighth ** F8 s measure 9 x 21 WOF = Width of Fabric RST = Right Sides Together Please read all instructions before attempting pattern. Quantities are for assumed 42 wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include ¼ seam allowances. ¼ seams are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated. To check for pattern corrections, or view other patterns available please visit www.livelovesew.com.au Basket Weave: Layout Diagram Page 1

CUTTING: Step 1 Take your fabric and cut as follows: from Background Fabric, cut: (19x) 2 ½ x WOF strips (3x) 7 x WOF strips subcut these into: (14x) 7 x 7 squares from selected {Binding} Print Fabric, cut: 7 each 2 ½ WOF strips from Print {Backing} Fabric, cut into TWO equal lengths and join along selvedge edges. Press. PREPARING: Step 2 Take your Rollie Pollie and split open to make 19x pairs of prints. You will have two 2 ½ strips in matching prints. These form the top and bottom two rails in your Rail Fence block units. PIECING: Step 3 Make Rail Fence Block Units by matching a 2 ½ print fabric strip with a 2 ½ background strip and sewing along the long edge. Press to the print fabric. Finish your strip set by joining the second 2 ½ strip to the other side of the background (diagram a). (diagram a) Step 4 Sub-cut these strips at 6 ½ intervals to create six Rail Fence Block Units. Set aside and repeat for all 19 strip pairs (diagram b). (diagram b) Step 5 Edge and Corner Setting Blocks: To cut and make the corner and edge setting blocks, take 7 x 7 background square at a time and line up diagonally with the markings on your cutting mat. I like to use the 45º line markings on my mat at this step. Take your ruler and rotary cutter and slice your block in half, diagonally from one corner to the opposite (diagram c). You will now have two half-blocks for your edge settings. Repeat for another 12 background squares. You will have one remaining 7 square to create your corner setting blocks. (diagram c) (diagram d) Page 2

FINISHING: To create your corner setting blocks, repeat the above steps to create two halved. Without moving these pieces, line your ruler up along the opposite diagonals. Using a rotary cutter slice this piece again, creating four quarter-block triangles (diagram d). Set these aside for quilt top construction. Step 6 The quilt top is set in an on-point grid. To assemble the top you will sew blocks in rows on the diagonal and join these rows together as per the following quilt layout diagram (diagram e). Layout blocks in desired layout, ensuring that all corner and edge pieces are orientated the correct way. It is helpful at this stage to lay your full blocks down, and piece the corner and edge blocks around these. Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 Row 4 Row 5 Row 6 (diagram e) Step 7 Step 8 Referring to Row 2 in the diagram, sew an edge setting block to one side of a block and press seams to the left. Add another edge setting block to the other side and press in same direction. It is helpful to pin at this step, and using a pin each side of your points, or forked pins, helps to line up your seams. This forms your Row 2. Continue sewing your blocks into rows following the diagram for reference. Page 3

Step 9 Sew rows together, starting at Row 1 and joining to Row 2. It is important to note that, as the quilt is set on point, you will need to line up your blocks and pin to ensure rows, blocks and points match and form the correct shape of the quilt top. i.e. The Corner Setting Block in Row 1 lines up with the middle or full block in Row 2. Continue to sew rows together to form your quilt top. QUILTING: Step 10 Layer quilt top, batting and backing fabric (with join horizontal across the quilt top) and baste with preferred method. Quilt as desired. Trim excess or square up quilt top before binding. BINDING: Step 11 Step 12 Step 13 Sew 2 ½ binding strips together end to end to form one long strip. Press seams open. Press strip in half with wrong sides together. Using a quarter inch (¼ ) seam sew your binding strips to the front of your basted and quilted top, aligning raw edges together. Start on one side leaving a beginning tail of about 6-10 inches. Sew along until you reach ¼ from the corner. Raise presser foot and, without breaking thread, turn your quilt top. Lift strip straight up and then bring back down to align raw edges again (diagram f). Continue sewing your binding strips and repeat for the next three corners. (stitch until ¼ from corner) (lift strip up, and then down to align raw edges, continue sewing in place from corner) (quilt back) (diagram f) Step 14 Step 15 Step 16 When you reach the beginning of your binding, stop sewing and match and trim the two tails of binding strip, so it will sit neatly along the quilt edge. Unfold your strips and with right sides together, sew your two tails together with a ¼ seam (you may need to wrangle your quilt a bit to do this!). Re-fold sewn strip and lay flat against side of your quilt and sew in place. Turn binding strip to back-side of your quilt and hand-sew in place. Take the time to check your trimmed binding piece and make adjustments to ensure it isn t pulling * in the case of machine binding complete all above steps, however sewing the binding strip to the BACK of the quilt in step 12, and turning to the front of the quilt, and machine stitching in step 16.
