YEAR IN REFUSE Alex Westgate turns rejected illustrations into a sell-out newspaper www.alexwestgate.ca What to do with work that gets turned down? Rather than throw it out, illustrator Alex Westgate gave his rejected ideas new life with a digital tabloid newspaper. Year in Refuse is an anti-portfolio of sorts, filled with work too weird, unsettling and otherwise unpublishable to go anywhere else. He put the newspaper up for sale on his website, where copies were quickly snatched up. We love that Westgate turned rejected concepts into a winning publication through newsprint. MISE EN PLACE Kristian Beek s food photos pack a punch with newsprint www.kristianbeek.com It s hard to categorise photographer Kristian Beek s work. I photograph delicious things is how he puts it. More than that, Beek knows how to pack a surreal visual punch, whether shooting in a studio or a greasy spoon. His vibrant, high-contrast images are perfectly suited for newsprint and Mise en Place is a long-standing staff favourite. IMAGE RESOLUTION When using photos and images (such as.jpg,.tiff or.png), make sure the resolution is high enough to look clear in print. The resolution of an image is measured in dots-per-inch (dpi). A standard computer screen runs at 72dpi and looks pretty sharp, but in print we recommend going no lower than 150dpi. For best results, images should be closer to 300dpi. 300dpi The ideal (and maximum) resolution to keep your images looking sharp in print. 150dpi Our minimum recommended resolution. This is the quality you would get from a 300dpi image set to double its original size. BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES If you re printing black and white images, you can set them up in CMYK or greyscale. It s a matter of preference, so here are examples of both formats. NEED A HAND? Email us at support@newspaperclub.com CMYK 72dpi This resolution is ideal for images on a screen, but it can start to look pixelated in print. Greyscale 25dpi Low resolution images will look very pixelated in print. This can happen if you stretch the size of an image too much.
