February - March 2016 A Place to Learn, Share & Be Creative Happy Anniversary to The Yarn Haven... 10 years ago...on Groundhog s Day...I opened The Yarn Haven. In some ways it seems like I ve been open FOREVER...and in other ways it seems like just yesterday. A lot has happened in 10 years. Each year it seems the shop changes a bit. But the one thing that has remained consistent throughout the years has been the wonderful customers who have supported us. So please come by the shop on Saturday, February 4 as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. There will be refreshments, an all-day long Sit N Stitch, and a free gift for each customer who makes a purchase. The Yarn Haven s Annual Retreat... There are still a few spots for our retreat on March 10 12, 2017 at the Steiner Bell Lodge in Gatlinburg, TN. Our workshop teacher this year will be Leah Oakley (designer of the Fruit Striped Gum socks.) She will be teaching a workshop on Tips and Tricks of Sock Knitting. She is an avid sock knitter and trains dogs in agility and freestyle. You are going to love her workshop! For crocheters, our own teacher, Kelora Goethe will be doing a workshop on crocheting socks. Kelora has crocheted since she was a child and you will enjoy her teaching as well. The cost is $300 if sharing a room and $375 if you want a private room. This includes 2 nights lodging, a fabulous workshop, 5 home-cooked meals, door prizes, pillow gifts, time for knitting, crocheting, weaving or spinning and lots of fun and laughter. Don t let the last few spots get filled before you sign up! Spa Cloths 2017... In 2017 we are going to have a monthly spa cloth for you to make using a wonderful mercerized cotton yarn...tahki Cotton Classic. Spa Cloths are so nice to use and make great gifts when paired with a bar of Bon Aqua Cabins handmade soap. We won t be doing a monthly class this year, but if you have trouble, then pop into one of our weekly classes or make an appointment with the Stitch Doctor for some help. Each month we ll have a knit and crochet pattern available for purchase. Buy 1 skein of Tahki Cotton Classic each month and the pattern will be free. Valentine Gifts... Be sure and tell your love that you want them to go to The Yarn Haven for your Valentine gift this year. We will have special bouquets of yarn made up in some of our most popular yarns. Flowers are pretty, but they don t last forever. Candy is nice, but it stays a little longer then we want it to on our tummies and hips. But yarn...yarn is the best gift of all!

Fiber Friends We continue to make blankets for Project Linus this month. Their mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of NEW HOMEMADE WASHABLE blankets and lovingly created by volunteer blanketeers. They need sizes for babies (36 x 36 ), children (40 x 60 ) and teens in cheerful colors. Will you consider making one blanket for a young person in need of some comfort. For more information, check out their website at http://www.projectlinuseasttn.org/. Blocking and Felting? Many times we have heard folks say that they can t felt their project because they have a front-loading washer. Or they know their garment should be blocked, but they are scared to do it. Blocking will smooth out any wrinkles, stretch garment out to the correct size, relax the stitches so they are all more uniform and make the garment look and fit better. We can provide these services for you. Just bring your projects to us for felting or blocking. Cost is $10 per item. (If there are several items for the same project that need blocking, cost will be a total of $15.) Weekly Classes... We have Weekly Classes mornings, afternoons, and on the evenings we are open. Mimi s classes are for knitters & Kelora s classes are for knitters OR crocheters. If you need help with a project or just want to start a new project with someone giving you help each step along the way, then come join one of our Weekly Classes. Classes are $12.50/class, but if you sign up for a block of classes before the month begins, you get a discounted price of $10.00/class. Be sure to call the shop to make sure we have room in the class for you to join us. Our weekly classes meet: Monday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Knit OR Crochet Monday evenings (6-8 pm) - Knit only Tuesday mornings (10 am Noon) Knit OR Crochet Tuesday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Knit OR Crochet Tuesday evenings (6-8 pm) - Knit OR Crochet Wednesday mornings (10 am Noon) - Knit only Wednesday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Knit only Thursday mornings (10 am Noon) - Knit only Thursday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Knit OR Crochet CLASS IS FULL Thursday evenings (6-8 pm) - Knit only Friday mornings (10 am Noon) - Knit only Friday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Knit only Friday afternoons (1-3 pm) - Crochet only Saturday mornings (10 am Noon) - usually 2nd & 4th Saturdays Knit OR Crochet If you want to drop in for a class that you have not paid for, then please call the shop first to see if there is room. Teachers have requested only 7 students at a time. We would appreciate this courtesy. *************************************************************************************** Stitch Doctor available this year! Sometimes you just need a little bit of help to get back on track with a project. Well, we have a solution to your problem. Never letting go of your needle? Using much less motion in your arm and shoulder? Maybe it s time to add continental knitting to your knitting toolbox! In this class you will learn to tension your yarn in your left hand for knitting and purling. This method will make knitting & unknitting smoother and easier to discern errors, and therefore correct those errors. Supplies: worsted or DK weight yarn & needles to match.
