CALL FOR ARTISTS MURAL PROJECT BACKGROUND The Mundelein Arts Commission (MAC) was established in 2016 to promote cultural, visual, and performance art in Mundelein. One goal of the MAC is to establish a mural program in an effort to bring vibrancy and character to Downtown Mundelein. The MAC is partnering with a local property owner who is generously donating the use of an exterior wall for Mundelein s first mural project, and therefore is seeking an artist to provide design services. The chosen wall at 18 E. Park Street is located within Downtown Mundelein and is also adjacent to the event space for Park on Park Cruise Nights, a heavilyattended classic car show that is held throughout the summer. Page 2 contains theme and style guidelines for the desired mural. At this time, the MAC is open to two forms of murals: a) Traditional, painted mural; or b) Digital graphic printed on a vinyl wrap, which is then adhered to the building by a sign contractor. If the artist proposes a painted mural, they will also be responsible for application. If the artist is providing a digital graphic, the artist will only be providing image files (preferably vector to preserve resolution), and the MAC will be responsible for coordinating its application with a sign contractor. THEME AND STYLE GUIDELINES Theme: Style: The artwork should include the word MUNDELEIN with each letter containing artwork. A postcard is shown to the right demonstrating the concept. The artwork should not replicate this exact design, but should be conceptually similar. The artwork inside the letters (or surrounding the letters) is up to creative interpretation, but is suggested to contain imagery related to Mundelein s character and history. Examples being: natural elements, iconic structures, cultural themes, and historic themes. Owner has expressed interest in a vintage look. The preferred style is influenced by vintage wall advertisements or vintage travel posters. Use of color is preferred. Below are links to websites to give a general idea of the preferred style: The Walldogs* - http://thewalldogs.com/ American Travel Posters by Anderson Design Group* - https://www.andersondesigngroupstore.com/a/collections/american-travel *These links are provided for stylistic guidance. Artwork featured on these websites should NOT be replicated and artwork submitted by the artist must be entirely original. Size: For digital submittals that will be printed on vinyl, please be cognizant of the size of the wall and ensure that the artwork will scale appropriately. For this reason, vector artwork is preferred. If raster images are instead provided, please ensure that the resolution is sufficient for the size of the wall. Other notes: Artwork should not advertise for any on-site or off-site business. Artwork does not need to cover the entire length of the wall if a smaller mural benefits the design of the artwork. Creative use of unpainted negative space (for painted murals only) is also acceptable. The MAC is open to deviations from the theme and style guidelines if the artist feels that said deviations meet the intent of the project. SELECTION PROCESS The selection process will be a collaboration between the Mundelein Arts Commission and the property owner. Due to public artwork s subjective nature, the MAC reserves the right to select or deny any proposal. Please be aware that the decision will be based on not only the quality of the proposal, but also the stylistic preferences of the MAC and property owner. SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS Artists should include the following at a minimum in their proposals: Whether you propose to: A) paint the mural directly on the wall, or B) supply a digital file to be printed and applied via a vinyl wrap. A low-detail rendering showing how you would interpret the theme. A high-detail rendering of the final artwork is not necessary until an artist is selected. The proposal should contain enough detail to represent the style and direction of the artwork. Keep in mind that payment is not offered for proposals provided in response to this Call for Artists. 3
An explanation of work (in narrative format) for the proposed artwork. A portfolio or examples of previous work that demonstrate the ability of the artist to meet the project s intent. If proposing a painted mural, list materials proposed (type of paint, UV and graffiti-resistant coating, etc.). This does not apply to digitally printed artwork. A price estimate, including materials and labor. If painting, please include costs for application as well as design. Price estimates for digitally printed murals should only include design and image rights. Time estimates: o Length of time to complete final design rendering. o Length of time to apply mural (if painted). General availability from May through September. Any other constraints or accommodations we should be aware of. Submittal Instructions 1. Fill out the attached form on Page 5. 2. Attach all requested documents as described on Pages 3 and 4 (Submittal Requirements). Incomplete proposals will not be considered. Only PDF, JPEG, PNG, or Word Document files will be accepted if the proposal is submitted by email. 3.
