Harvest Basket Block Pieced block using strip piecing and fold-over triangles Finished size 12 Square, Unfinished size 12 ½ square Overview The block is constructed by making two 6 ½ by 12 ½ rectangles (the Handle Rectangle and the Basket Rectangle). Then the two rectangles are sewn together to complete the block. Requirements Tools: Sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, scissors, ruler, water-soluble marker or pencil, and iron.
Pattern Notes: Use a ¼ seam allowance. Finished Block size is 12 square, Unfinished size is 12 ½ square. Press as indicated. 3 1. Using a ¼ seam, sew one of the 1 ¼ x 8 ½ Brown (Fabric B) strips to one edge of the 8 ½ Background (Fabric A) square. Press toward the square. 2. Sew the 1 ¼ Gold (Fabric C) square to one end of the remaining 1 ¼ x 8 ½ Brown (Fabric B) strips. Press toward the small square. Then sew the strip to the 8 ½ square as shown below. The seams should lock. Press toward the large square. Cut the resulting square along the diagonal as shown. 3. Cut the 7 ½ Background (Fabric A) square along one diagonal. Using a ¼ seam, sew one of the triangles to each of the Brown strips. The triangles are oversized. We will trim them after they are sewn. Press toward the triangles. 4. After sewing on the triangles, trim so that the resulting rectangle measures 6 ½ x 12 ½. Be sure to leave a ¼ seam allowance above the small Gold square. Leave a 1/4 seam allowance above the small Gold square. The unfinished Handle Rectangle is 6 ½ x 12 ½. Handle Rectangle is complete.
Making the Basket Rectangle Making the Design Center of the Basket 1. Make a strip set. Using a ¼ seam, sew one of the 1 ½ x 8 Light Orange (Fabric D) strips to each long side of the 1 ½ x 8 Red (Fabric F) strip to make a 3 ½ x 8 strip set. Please see diagram. Press the seams toward the center of the strip. 2. Cut the strip set vertically to make 5-1 ½ x 3 ½ rectangles. Please see diagram. 3. Make a second strip set. Using a ¼ seam, sew the 1 ½ x 11 Green (Fabric G) strip to the long side of the 1 ½ x 11 Light Orange (Fabric D) strip. Then sew the 1 ½ x 11 Dark Orange (Fabric E) strip to the other side of the Light Orange (Fabric D) strip to make a 3 ½ x 11 strip set. Please see diagram. 4. Press the seams away from the center of the strip set. 5. Cut the strip set vertically to make 4-2 ½ x 3 ½ rectangles. Please see diagram.
6. To complete the Design Center of the Basket Rectangle, sew the cut rectangles together as shown and align them so that the seams lock. Press away from the 1 x 3 rectangles. Trim the oversized Design Center as shown below so that it measures 3 ½ x 12 ½. Completing the Basket Rectangle 7. Sew a Gold (Fabric C) 1 ½ x 12 ½ strip to the top and bottom of the Design Center as shown. Sew the Brown 1 ½ x 12 ½ strip to the bottom of the rectangle. Please refer to the diagram below. Press seams away from the center. The rectangle should measure 6 ½ x 12 ½. 8. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 3 x 3 Background (Fabric A) square. Align the squares on the bottom of the basket as shown and sew along the line. Trim the seam to ¼ and press toward the bottom corner.
The completed Basket Rectangle should measure 6 ½ x 12 ½ and is shown below. Final Assembly Using a ¼ seam, sew the Handle Rectangle to the Basket Rectangle as shown below.
