1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The PS 430 is a fur channel speaker statin designed fr use in an ASL intercm system and prvides full duplex cmmunicatins. It incrprates a ludspeaker, a gseneck micrphne and a headset cnnectr. The PS 430 RM mdel has a small built-in electret mic instead f a gseneck mic. Each channel has a Vlume (listen level) cntrl, a Talk and Call buttn with LED indicatrs and a tw-stage side tne trimmer. A master vlume cntrls the ttal speaker/headset vlume. The unit is equipped with a limiter fr the gseneck micrphne, allwing the user t speak clse int the micrphne withut giving rise t verlad and distrtin. Ludspeaker dimming is autmatic if the gseneck micrphne is active. The XLR-4 headset cnnectr allws cnnecting a headset r telephne handset. If a headset is cnnected, bth gseneck micrphne and speaker are disabled autmatically. Special attentin has been paid t the intelligibility f speech. By applying lw nise/high speed pamps, a speech presence filter and a specially develped high pwer bridged headphne amplifier, cmmunicatin is very cmfrtable even in envirnments with high backgrund nise level. The unique ASL CALL system prvides bth a flashing red LED and a very distinctive sund signal. Only a slight tuch f the CALL buttn makes the red LED flash, whilst hlding the buttn fr tw secnds will activate the CALL sund signal. The vlume f the sund signal (buzzer) can be adjusted at the frnt panel. Fully electrnic switching allws fr 'sft' micrphne ON switching (latched r mmentary), remte Mic Mute facility and autmatic speaker attenuatin. 2.0 INSTALLATION T cnnect the PS 430 t the intercm system, use prfessinal flexible micrphne cable with 2 wires and 1 shield nly. These cables may be cnnected t the LINE cnnectr sckets n the PS 430 side panel, using the Y-crds which are in the shipping cartn. The PS 430 is fully prtected against wiring mistakes (reverse pwer) r shrt circuit in the intercnnect cables. A special kit is available fr munting the PS 430 in a 19" rack, taking 2U f rack space 3.0 FRONT PANEL CONTROLS & CONNECTOR PAGE 3 User Manual PS 430 / August 2016 ASL Intercm BV.
1 LISTEN LEVEL cntrl knbs T preset the listen level fr each channel separately (see als #4). 2 TALK buttns Allw talking t each channel separately r t several channels simultaneusly. If a TALK buttn is switched n, its large green LED is lit. Mmentary switching: If a TALK buttn is pushed and held, the micrphne signal is sent t the referring intercm channel until the buttn is released. Latched switching: If a TALK buttn is pushed shrtly, it is electrnically latched and the micrphne signal is sent t the referring intercm channel. If pushed again, the TALK buttn switches ff. Mic Mute when latched n: After n an intercm channel a s-called Mic Mute signal has been received frm a PRO Series master statin r pwer supply, the cnnectin between micrphne and that intercm channel is interrupted. By pushing the TALK buttn, that cnnectin is restred again. 3 CALL buttns T activate the call system, fr each channel separately. By a mmentary push a call signal is sent t all statins cnnected t the referring intercm channel and all Call LEDs start flashing. Pushing and hlding the CALL buttn fr 2 secnds activates the call buzzer, prvided there is n buzzer mute signal n the referring channel. After the CALL buttn is released the LEDs cntinue t flash fr a further 2 secnds. 4 MASTER VOLUME knb Functins as the master vlume cntrl f the listen levels f the 4 intercm channels (see als #1), fr bth the speaker and the headset. 5 SIDE TONE LEVEL trimmers These trimmers (ne fr each channel) are t minimize the speaker feeding back int the gseneck micrphne (unit feedback); They als determine the level f yur wn vice as yu hear it in the speaker r headset. 6 SIDE TONE HI trimmers These trimmers have the same purpse as trimmers #5, but slely fr the high frequencies. Trimmer #5 and #6 adjustment prcedure, fr each channel separately: set trimmers in start psitin: fully clckwise switch ff the micrphnes f all cnnected (speaker-) statins make sure that there is n autmatic speaker attenuatin (turn trimmer #7 fully clckwise) push the TALK buttn f the channel f which ne wants t adjust the side tne. Slwly turn up the listen vlume f the PS 430 (channel- and master vlume). speak int the gseneck micrphne adjust the speaker listen level t a minimum by turning the side tne trimmers cunter-clckwise (first trimmer #5 and then trimmer #6; repeat this a few times) cnnect a headset t the PS 430 (the speaker and gseneck are nw autmatically disabled) and speak int the headset micrphne check whether the level f yur vice in the headset can(s) is sufficient. If nt, push up this level a bit by turning side tne trimmer #5 clckwise. The trimmer perating area is between fully clckwise and minimum level. Adjusting the side tnes des nt affect the level f yur vice as it is heard by ther statins. 7 SPEAKER ATTENUATOR trimmer T adjust the extent t which the ludspeaker is autmatically dimmed if the gseneck mic is switched n. It prevents unit feedback if side tne rejectin is nt sufficient. It als minimizes system feedback r a 'hllw' sund when the gseneck micrphnes f ther speaker statins (n ne r several f the cnnected party lines) are switched n as well. Adjustment prcedure : make sure that there is n headset cnnected switch ff all TALK buttns f the PS 430. inject an audi signal n ne f the intercm channels via the aux input f a Pr Series master statin r separate pwer supply turn up the listen vlume f the PS 430 (channel and master vlume). activate the gseneck micrphne (push the TALK buttn f the selected channel) adjust the desired degree f speaker attenuatin (turning the trimmer cunterclckwise increases the attenuatin) PAGE 4 User Manual PS 430 / August 2016 ASL Intercm BV.
8 BUZZER VOLUME trimmer This trimmer adjusts the vlume f the buzzer, which is lcated behind the frnt panel. The buzzer is activated if the CALL buttn f the PS 430 (r a CALL buttn f any ther statin n the party lines t which the PS 430 is cnnected) is pushed fr lnger than 2 secnds, prvided there is n Buzzer Mute Signal n these party lines cming frm a Pr Series master statin r separate pwer supply. 9 HEADSET cnnectr This is an XLR-4 cnnectr fr the cnnectin f a lcal headset if private cnversatin is desired. The headset must have a can impedance f minimum 200 hms. In case the headset has tw cans in parallel, each can must have an impedance f minimum 400 hms. 8.0 PARTY LINE, TECHNICAL CONCEPT User statins in an ASL intercm system are cnnected via ne r several 'party lines'. A party line ffers tw way ( full duplex ) cmmunicatin and cnsists f standard micrphne (multi-pair) cable. One wire is used as an audi line, ne as a pwer line and the screen f the cable functins as earth/return. Current drive is used fr signal transfer. Each statin utilizes a current amplifier t amplify the micrphne signal and place it n the cmmn audi line where, due t the cnstant line impedance (situated in the pwer supply between XLR pin 3 and 1), a signal vltage is develped which can be further amplified and sent t the headphnes r ludspeakers. This principle has three advantages: the use f a single audi line allws several statins t talk and listen simultaneusly due t the high bridging impedance ffered by each statin, the number f statins n the party line has n influence n the level f the cmmunicatins signal pwer and audi t the intercm statins use the same cable The Call signal is als sent as a current n the audi line. It develps a DC ptential ver the line impedance which will be sensed by each statin and interpreted as a Call signal. 9.0 CABLING. The intercm lines (the party lines ) are f the shielded tw-cnductr micrphne cable type. The intercm line cnnectrs are f the XLR-3 type. Audi and Call signals are n pin 3, DC pwer is n pin 2 and pin 1 is cnnected t the shield f the cable which functins as the cmmn return fr audi and pwer. The audi signal is transferred in an unbalanced way (see Party Line, Technical Cncept ). T avid earth lps (hum), the pssible effect f electrmagnetic fields and t minimize pwer lss, certain rules have t be beyed when installing the cabling f an intercm system : Use high quality cable Use high quality micrphne cable (shielded tw cnductr cable, minimum 2x 0.30 mm2). In case multi-pair micrphne cable is used, there shuld be an verall shield and each pair shuld cnsist f tw cnductrs (minimum 2x 0.15 mm2) with separate shield. Use flexible cable Use flexible single and multi-pair micrphne cable instead f cable with slid cres, especially if the cable is subjected t bending during peratin r installatin. Cable screens t XLR pin 1 The screen f each separate micrphne cable and/r the screen f each single pair in a multi-pair cable, shuld be cnnected t pin 1 f each XLR-3 cnnectr. D nt cnnect these screens t the metal husing f ASL unitst r XLR-3 wall bxes. See sectin Earthing Cncept. Cnnect metal cable trunks, wall bxes and verall multi-pair cable screens t clean earth Metal cable trunks, metal wall bxes and verall multipair cable screens shuld be intercnnected and, at the 'central earth pint' in the intercm netwrk nly, be cnnected t a clean earth r a safety earth. (see sectin Earthing Cncept ). Keep metal cnnectin bxes and cable trunks r pipes islated frm ther metal parts Metal trunks r pipes fr intercm cables and metal cnnectin bxes shuld be munted in such a way that they are islated frm any ther metal husing r cnstructin part. Keep cables parallel as much as pssible When tw (multi channel) units in a netwrk are cnnected by mre than ne cable, make sure that these cables are parallel t each ther ver the whle distance between thse units. If using multi-pair cable, parallelism is ensured in the best pssible way. Avid clsed lps Always avid that intercm cables are making a clsed lp. S-called 'ring intercm' shuld nt physically be cabled as a ring.. Keep cables away frm electrmagnetic surces Keep intercm cables away frm high energy cables, e.g. 115/230/400V mains pwer r dimmer cntrlled feeds fr sptlights. Intercm cables shuld crss high energy cables at an angle f 90º nly. Intercm cables shuld never be in the same trunks as energy cables. Place pwer supply in a central psitin In case f a system pwered by a separate pwer supply: In rder t diminish pwer lsses, place the pwer supply as clse as pssible t where mst pwer cnsumptin ccurs, in ther wrds mst user statins are placed. ASL pwered units t a 'clean' mains utlet Master statins r pwer supplies shuld be cnnected t a mains utlet with a clean earth. Other audi equipment may be cnnected t this mains utlet, but avid using an utlet which als pwers dimmer cntrlled lighting systems. PAGE 7 User Manual PS 430 / August 2016 ASL Intercm BV.
