A SPOOKY SLEEPOVER Approx. Size 38 1/2in x 57 1/2in BEFORE THE FUN BEGINS Please read all instructions before you begin. Abbreviations. WOF = width of the fabric. Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. A SPOOKY SLEEPOVER What You Will Need (7) fat quarters of assorted cream fabrics for the background blocks, borders, and applique (7) fat quarters of assorted orange fabrics for borders and applique (2) fat quarters of assorted purple fabrics for the borders applique (2) fat quarters of assorted black & white print fabrics for the borders (1) fat quarter of solid gold fabric for the applique 70cm (3/4 yard) of black-on-black print fabric for the sashing strips and binding 30cm (3/8 yard) of solid darkest brown fabric for the applique Scraps of green, solid black, and aqua fabric for the applique (10) pairs of medium-large black buttons to use as eyes Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing. I use and recommend Heat-n-Bond Lite Dark brown stranded embroidery thread for the pumpkin s tendrils Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 44 1/2in x 63 1/2in for the quilt 2.3m (2 1/2 yards) of 42in wide coordinating backing fabric for the quilt A piece of wadding (batting) measuring 20 1/2in square for the pillow A piece of coordinating backing fabric measuring 20 1/2in square for the pillow Applique mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended) (1) 18in cushion insert (optional) General sewing supplies Tip! Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt. A Note About Buttons I like to use buttons on my projects but they aren t suitable for children under three (3) years of age, due to them being a choking hazard. Replace buttons with applique or embroidery when you are making the quilt. Cutting Instructions 1. From the assorted cream fabrics, cut a total of: (1) 16 1/2in square for the pillow. (16) 8 1/2in x 9 1/2in rectangles for the background blocks (79) 2 1/2in squares for the borders and pillow. 2. From the assorted orange, purple, and black & white fabrics, cut the following: (5) 4 1/2in squares and (26) 2 1/2in squares from the orange fabric, (6) 4 1/2in squares and (26) 2 1/2in squares from the purple fabric, and (5) 4 1/2in squares and (27) 2 1/2in squares from the black & white fabric. 3. From the black-on-black fabric, cut: (8) strips, 1 1/2in x WOF for the sashing strips. Trim (5) strips to measure 32 1/2in long. (6) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF for the binding 4. From the backing fabric cut two pieces approximately 44 1/2in long. Remove the selvedge. How to Make the Quilt 1. Trace the applique shapes from the template pages onto the paper side of the fusible webbing using a sharp pencil; leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. You will need to trace (4) pumpkin template A, (5) pumpkin template B, (1) cat template A, (1) cat template B, (1) moon, (2) small stars, (25) medium stars, and (2) large stars for the quilt; and (1) pumpkin template B, (3) medium stars, and (1) large star for the pillow. 2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the applique shapes as you go. Set aside the shapes for the pillow.

9 1/2in 3. Use the template and the colour photograph as a guide to fuse (9) pumpkins and the moon plus (1) medium star to (10) of the 8 1/2in x 9 1/2in assorted cream background blocks. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using machine blanket stitch and matching thread. Use a light, sharp pencil to draw the tendrils on the pumpkins, then backstitch using two strands of contrasting embroidery thread. Diagram 1 8 1/2in 4. Use the colour photograph as a guide to lay out all of the pumpkin blocks, the moon block, and remaining (6) 8 1/2in x 9 1/2in cream rectangles on a flat surface. When you are happy with the placement of the blocks, sew them together in (4) horizontal rows. Press the seams in each row open, then set aside. 5. Use the photograph as a guide to sew (8) assorted purple, orange, and black & white 4 1/2in squares together end to end to make a long strip. Press the seams open. Repeat to make (2). Use the photograph as a guide to centre and fuse (8) stars to each strip. Stitch around the shapes as before, then set aside. Diagram 2 6. Use the colour photograph as a guide to sew (8) assorted cream and (8) assorted purple, orange, and black & white 2 1/2in squares together end to end to make a checked strip. Alternate the cream and coloured fabrics as you sew. Press the seams towards the darker fabrics. Repeat to make (4) strips. 7. Pin and then sew (2) of these strips together, carefully matching the seams, to make the top border. Diagram 3 8. Pin and then sew this border to the top raw edge of the top row (moon and star row). See Diagram 4. 9. Use the photograph as a guide to fuse (1) cat, (1) large star, (4) medium stars, and (1) small star to the row. The bottom raw edge of the cat shape aligns with the bottom raw edge of the background block. The tail of the cat overlaps the checked border. Stitch around the shapes as before, then set aside. Diagram 4

10. Use the photograph and Diagram 5 as a guide to pin and then sew a black 1 1/2in x 32 1/2in strip and a 4 1/2in star strip to the top raw edge of the bottom row. Press the seams towards the black fabric. Diagram 5 11. Use the photograph as a guide to fuse (1) cat, (1) large star, (4) medium stars, and (1) small star to the row. The bottom raw edge of the cat shape aligns with the bottom raw edge of the background block. The tail of the cat overlaps the black and star strips. Stitch around the shapes as before. 12. Use the photograph as a guide to lay out all of the appliqued rows, checked sashing strips, and the remaining 1 1/2in x 32 1/2in solid black sashing strips on a flat surface. When you are happy with the placement of the rows, sew them together, carefully matching the edges of the rows, to make the centre of the quilt. Press well. 13. Sew the remaining (3) 1 1/2in black strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. 14. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) black strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left and right-hand sides of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the black fabric. 15. Use the photograph as a guide to sew (29) assorted cream, purple, orange, and black & white 2 1/2in squares together end to end to make a border strip. Alternate the cream and coloured fabrics as you sew. Adjust the seams by sewing some wider than 1/4in until the strip measures the length of the quilt (approx. 57 1/2in). This is easier than you think, a slightly wider 1/4in seam will quickly shorten the border strip without it looking out of place. Repeat to make (2) border strips, then pin and sew them to the left and right-hand sides of the quilt. Press the seams towards the black border. 16. Sew the (2) pieces of backing fabric together along the long edges, then trim to make a piece measuring approx. 44 1/2in x 63 1/2in. 17. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting from the centre and work your way out to the edges. 18. Sew buttons to the pumpkin s faces for eyes where indicated on the pattern template. Sew the buttons in place through all thicknesses of the quilt using strong thread. Knot securely. Set aside. The binding is sewn to the quilt when you have finished the pillow. If you are making the quilt without the pillow, bind your quilt now to finish. Make a Simple Cushion Cover Cut (2) 18 1/2in squares from your chosen fabric. Pin and then sew them together with right sides facing. Leave an opening on one side big enough to fit the cushion insert. Stuff the cushion with the cushion insert, then hand-stitch the opening closed using small stitches and matching thread. How to Make the Pillow 1. Use Diagram 6 as a guide to sew (8) orange, purple, and cream 2 1/2in squares together to make a long strip. Alternate the cream and coloured fabrics as before. Repeat to make (2). Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom of the 16 1/2in cream square. Press the seams outwards. 2. Repeat to sew (10) assorted squares together to make a long strip. Make (2). Pin and then sew them to the left and right-hand sides of the pillow, carefully matching the seams. 3. Use the photograph as a guide to fuse (1) pumpkin and (3) medium stars, and (1) large star to the pillow. Blanket stitch around the shapes, and backstitch the tendrils as before. Press well. Diagram 6 4. Place the appliqued pillow and the backing fabric together with right sides facing. Place the square of wadding (batting) on top and pin to secure. Stitch around three sides, leaving the top edge open for turning. Clip the corners to reduce the bulk, then turn the pillow right side out. Press well. There is no need to stitch the unsewn edge closed. 5. Quilt the pillow as before. 6. Use a pin to mark the centre of the pillow (on the top raw edge), then mark the centre of the quilt top (on the top edge) in the same way. 7. Place the quilt on a flat surface with the right side facing down. Place the pillow on the back of quilt with the right side facing down. Align the top raw edge of the pillow with the top raw edge of the quilt. Match the centres where marked by the pins. When you are happy with it s position, pin and then baste it to top of the quilt. 8. Hand-stitch the sides of the pillow to the back of the quilt using strong (matching) thread and small, neat stitches. Leave the bottom edge of the pillow open. The pillow section is where the most wear and tear will occur on your quilt. I would recommend stitching down each side twice to strengthen the hand-stitched seam. 9. Sew the (6) 2 1/2in black binding strips together using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and press well. Sew the binding to the quilt in the usual manner. The top binding, when turned to the back, will cover the raw edge of the pillow top. Label and date your quilt to finish. How to Fold the Quilt into the Pillow Lay the quilt right side up on a flat surface. Fold the sides of the quilt in towards the middle, using the side edges of the pillow as a guide. Start at the bottom and fold the quilt evenly, twice, towards the top. Fold the pillow over the quilt, then tuck your cushion and pajamas inside the pocket.

Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
