Elizabeth White, Art Teacher Spearman High School Art Lesson Plan 2011-12 How to Use Colored Pencils Objective: Students will be introduced to colored pencils and demonstrate mastery of the techniques of applying, blending, and burnishing colors in simple exercises Goal: Student will (1) draw 12 circles using different layering techniques with their colored pencils (2) students will draw a human hand using proper skin tones. Materials: pencil journal colored pencils, skin tone set sharpener hand photo OMS Q-tips Cups for OMS PPT: Colored Pencils Procedure: Teacher to show ppt presentation Go over 7 rules of drawing with colored pencils. Show examples. Students take notes. Demonstrate circle grid. Explain how to color each circle with each different pencil Students will complete the exercise Students will practice drawing a hand using the skin tone set of colored pencils in their journal TEKS: 117.52. Art, Level I, II, III, IV (1) Perception. The student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is expected to:(a) illustrate ideas for artworks from direct observation, experiences, and imagination; and (B) compare and contrast the use of art elements (color, texture, form, line, space, value) and art principles (emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, unity) in personal artworks and those of others, (2) Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. (C) demonstrate effective use of art media and tools in design, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

More 1 on 1 assistance Students may use fewer blending colors. Rubric: [ ] Burnishing. All areas of drawing were burnished with either white pencil, OMS or clear burnisher. [ ] Gradations. Students used a variety of colors to create new colors [ ] Strong color. Students used sharp pencils, creating deep color with no white showing through. [ ] Care and Effort Student demonstrated growth in their ability. Class time was used effectively. Student was on task 100% of the time and not talking to other students, daydreaming, etc. [ ] Craftsmanship. Extra debris is no present. Paper is not torn, colored in the wrong areas, smudged.
