This paper cntains sme cnsideratins abut line pwer supply circuitries with respect t lw pwer lss in standby peratin, circuitry peratin in a wide vltage range, and lw bill f material. Befre designing the pwer supply, please als cnsult the applicatin nte AN101 POWER SUPPLY LAYOUT that cntains sme layut design ntes t avid electrmagnetic interference (EMI). EMI can strngly reduce the TCM/RCM radi range perfrmance. 1. GENERAL POWER SUPPLY CONSIDERATIONS In buildings the actuatr circuitry is ften lcated within a junctin bx. The lad shuld be switched n and ff r shuld be dimmed by radi cntrl. Tw typical installatins can be fund. In the first case the neutral cnductr N is available, accrding t Figure 1. Often such a situatin is given if a cnventinal light switch in a wall bx shall be replaced by an EnOcean radi switch actuatr. If the neutral cnductr N is available a Parallel Pwer Supply PPS can be simply used t pwer the actuatr electrnics, accrding t Figure 3. If the neutral cnnectr is nt available, a PPS is nt sufficient. Accrding t Figure 4 supply vltage is nly available as lng as the switch is pen. As sn as the switch is clsed n vltage difference is available anymre (The prtected earth must nt be used as neutral cnductr if it is available because f safety reasns!). In this case an additinal Serial Pwer Supply SPS is required, accrding t Figure 5. The later described cmbinatin f a PPS and a SPS will give this pssibility t supply EnOcean radi receiver withut having a neutral cnductr by using nly the available tw wires in a usual wall junctin bx. 2. LOW-LOSS POWER SUPPLIES 2. 1 Lw-Lss Parallel Pwer Supply (PPS) In applicatins were N is available a simple PPS like Figure 6 is used typically. Disadvantage f this pwer supply cncept is the pr efficiency. An utput pwer f arund 0.1W is required t pwer a typical radi receiver and the typical stand-by pwer dissipatin f such a simple pwer supply is arund 1.3W. Lw unit pwer cnsumptin is imprtant, because the pwer supply is permanently in peratin, als in radi receiver standby mde when the lad is switched ff. EnOcean has prttyped a high efficiency PPS that allws very efficient line pwering f radi mdules. It perates in a very wide vltage range and can replace existing pwer supplies in a green manner. 2. 1 High-Efficiency Serial Pwer Supply (SPS) Picture 8 shws the principle cnfiguratin f a SPS. Accrding t Figure 5, supply vltage is nly available if the switch is pened. Disadvantage is the very pr efficiency if it is realized by an hmic vltage drp nly. Fr generatin f e.g. 3V/35mA utput pwer a resistrs vltage drp f minimum 0.5V is required (The best step up cnverter starts at 0.5V). At a lad current f 10 A the pwer lss is 5W, that results in prbably critical unit internal heating! TYPICAL APPLICATIONS 3.1 PPS fr radi actuatrs in a junctin bx with neutral cnductr If the phase and a neutral cnductr are permanently available, the described PPS ffers a lw-lss and wide vltage range slutin fr supplying the radi electrnics f RCM r TCM radi cmmunicatin mdule. In cmparisn t ther typical supplies the lw-lss PPS ffers 50% reductin f stand-by pwer lsses. 3.2 PPS fr radi Dimmers withut neutral cnductr At dimmer applicatin nly a part f sine wave is used fr lamp current supply. Fr example the shaded part f the sine wave in Figure 11 is nt used and the vltage drp between zer crssing and leading edge can be used t pwer a TCM mdule via a energy strage capacitr. The lw-lss PPS ffers a gd apprach fr radi dimmers because f its high efficiency in a wide vltage range. 3.3 PPS/SPS fr switching actuatrs withut neutral cnductr Fr switching applicatins withut neutral cnductr, e.g. in a wall bx, the PPS can perate in cmbinatin with the SPS like shwn in the Figure 12. The peratin f the PPS is serial in the supply current f the lad. If the serial lad current is 0.1A fr a minimum the SPS is able t generate 1.5V, 3.3V r 5.0V by phase cntrl. This allws peratin at very lw switching lads like 10W at 110V in US. Depending n the used pwer transistr and the switching relay the SPS can be laded as well with high currents like 10A and mre. Please nte that the PPS/SPS pwer supply des nt wrk expedient with diming applicatins. DEVELOPMENT STATUS Rle f EnOcean This paper describes prttypes that prve the technical feasibility f the slutin t OEMs. The EnOcean pwer supply cncepts are prven fr labratry use but are nt develped t a final prduct yet. Patents are pending. EnOcean ffers the circuitry details f the high efficiency PPS and the SPS prttypes n a licensing base. EnOcean sees itself as a cmpnent and technlgy supplier, which prvides OEM custmers with energy generatrs, energy management, radi cmpnents, and cmmunicatin firmware. The custmers f EnOcean develp and prduce the final devices (pwer mdules, husings, etc.), have system integratin cmpetence (cntrl centre, cntrl algrithms, actuatrs, etc.), and access t final prduct market.
