BRIGHTON & HOVE ARTISTS PACK #BeMoreSnail We invite you to come out of your shell in Autumn 2018 Registered Charity No. 802145.

03 We re delighted to be working with Wild in Art for the second time to deliver another spectacular art installation throughout Brighton & Hove. In 2016 we were delighted by the great success of our Snowdogs by the Sea, which in addition to raising 310,000 for Martlets, brought joy and creativity to the city. We re incredibly excited to exhibit a second city-wide art installation, which will feature another lovable character: the Snail! The sculpture resonates so wonderfully with the work we do at Martlets. Our lifechanging hospice care helps people do the things they love with the time they have. In this fast-paced city it s often hard to remember to slow down and appreciate the things in life that make us smile. The bright and beautifully painted snails across our city will be a constant reminder to take a moment to enjoy the time we have with the people we share our lives with. We can t wait to see each sculpture and enjoy our city s sights at a snail s pace! Imelda Glackin, CEO, Martlets

join the SNA I LWA Y We are inviting everyone to #BeMoreSnail. As the leaves turn golden in Autumn 2018, Martlets and Wild in Art will be coming out of their shells as The Snailway arrives in Brighton & Hove. Snail sculptures will be popping up throughout the city, decorated by talented artists and community groups with the support of philanthropic local businesses. Get on board and submit your designs for the chance to take part in this spectacular city-wide art installation!

05 how does it work? We invite artists to be inspired, get imaginative and celebrate the uniqueness of Brighton & Hove by submitting designs to our second public art event, Snailspace. Businesses, attractions, schools and community groups will have the chance to sponsor a blank snail sculpture the canvas. Your snail designs will then be shown to our sponsors and selected artists will be commissioned to customise a snail each. These will be displayed in the streets and public spaces of Brighton & Hove throughout Autumn 2018 for everyone in the city to enjoy. In December 2018, the snails will take centre stage at a charity auction to raise funds for Martlets, before they snailaway to their permanent homes. Why get involved? This event promotes the importance of creativity and its immense value socially, culturally and economically. Snailspace is a unique opportunity to get involved in a public art event that is set to inspire people throughout the region. Become a part of The Snailway, where your work will be showcased to a mass audience, enabling you to connect with other artists, businesses and the community on a spectacular level. Every single aspect of being involved in Snowdogs and creating Max has led to work or commissions. Having something so visible, over such a long period, meant that it really brought me to the attention of a new audience and has led directly to specific commissions as well as creating interest in my work. Sarah Arnett, Snowdog Artist 2016 Sarah Arnett s Snowdog, Max, sold for 22,000! How to get involved? Complete the submission form and send with your Snail design to the address at the end of this pack. Alternatively these will be put to a panel of local art experts. The shortlisted artworks will then be presented to the event sponsors in April 2018. Our Snail sculpture is a three dimensional blank canvas, enabling artists to create their own unique work of art on a brilliant and versatile form. They are manufactured using a mixture of Class II fire retardant laminating resin and chopped roving fibreglass over an initial brushed-on layer of polyester gel coat. Each Snail is finished with a primer and is ready to paint. Sculpture dimensions: Height 150cm x Length 170cm x Width 75cm, Weight: 30kg SNAILSPACEBRIGHTON.CO.UK @SNAILSPACEBH

Will I get paid? If your design is chosen by a sponsor to appear in the art installation, we will pay you a fee of 800, upon completion of your Snail. You must supply all your own materials when painting and designing your Snail. You will be acknowledged as the artist on a plaque attached to the concrete base of the sculpture and in the official sculpture map, website and app. Should your design be commissioned, you will be invited to attend the auction event to see first-hand how your sculpture can raise funds to support Brighton & Hove s local hospice, Martlets. the SNAILWAY timetable January March 2018 Artist submission window now open. Submit your Snail designs for a chance to be involved! April 2018 Sponsors select their artist and design from a pre-selected shortlist. May 2018 Successful Snailspace artists are confirmed and the fun begins! June and July 2018 Artists have 8 weeks to paint and decorate their snails in preparation of The Snailway. September until November 2018 Snailspace is live! Throughout the Autumn, the city gets the chance to see your artwork on display. December 2018 The auction is held to raise money for Martlets. Last year, one of our sculptures went for 22,000! What will the bidding start at this year?! 06

hints and tips for producing your design 07 1. Snailspace is an interactive event, so please keep in mind that your sculpture will be repeatedly touched by the public. Artists may attach items to the sculpture, however, unless secured robustly, add-ons may be removed or damaged. 2. While we welcome all art forms, collage and/or sticking paper or paper-based products on to the sculpture does not prove as effective as paring or mosaics. Please consider this before submitting your design. 3. Art materials are not provided. The use of acrylic paints is recommended although artificial resin paint or two-component paint can also be used to create a design. To complete your sculpture, it must be finished with a waterproof non-yellowing varnish, provided by Martlets. 4. Artists will not be responsible for placing their sculpture on the streets or collecting them at the end of the event. We do, however, ask artists to be available during and after the event for any touch-up work that may be required. If an artist is unavailable another artist will carry out this work. 5. You may submit up to three designs but please be aware that no more than two can be commissioned by a single artist. 6. We will require you to sign our standard copyright agreement for each design you submit. This is included in the artist s submission form. 7. When planning your designs, please bear in mind that they should be appropriate for public display to a mass audience. Designs that are overtly religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. Additionally, neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed. 8. Artists may alter the basic sculpture shape but if doing so, must ensure the finished work remains structurally intact. It is recommended that only artists experienced in working with fibreglass submit designs that use this process. 9. Martlets will provide a painting space in a central location in the city for you to create your Snail if you do not have space at home or in a studio. Should you wish to paint your sculpture in your own studio, you will be responsible for collecting and returning it to the painting space. Join The Snailway today! Complete our online submission form and send your designs via www.snailspacebrighton.co.uk or complete and sign the submission form and send your designs to: Sarah Harvey, Project Manager, Snailspace Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove BN3 7LW or email your design to snailspace@martlets.org.uk If you wish to speak to the team about your submission, please call 01273 273444 Email submissions must be in PDF or JPG format and not exceed a file size of 2mb (72dpi resolution). We will contact you if we require a high-resolution version of your submission. You may submit other examples of your work but please restrict them to no more than A4 in size. Martlets Hospice is unable to return any materials submitted. The closing date for submissions is 30 March 2018. #SnailedIt Brand, tone of voice & design by: &
