PROJECT OVERVIEW Bucky on Parade is a public art event that will bring over 100 life-sized Bucky Badger statues to the streets of Madison and Dane County. Modeled after popular public art events including Madison s Cow Parade (2006) and Herky on Parade (2004 and 2014) in Iowa City, Bucky on Parade will feature Bucky Badger statues transformed into works of arts by local and regional artists. These statues will be on display throughout downtown Madison, the University of Wisconsin campus and beyond throughout the summer of Event proceeds will support Garding Against Cancer, the Madison Area Sports Commission and other community charities. PROJECT OBJECTIVES Design a season-long free event to be enjoyed by Madison area residents, UW students, and visitors Create a unique fundraising event for worthy benefactors Garding Against Cancer, Madison Area Sports Commission and other local charities Design an event which reflects the positive Town and Gown relationship between UW and the Madison community PROJECT PARTNERS Project Manager, Organizer and Oversight: Madison Area Sports Commission Project Partners: University of Wisconsin (Chancellor s Office), Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association, UW Athletics, Garding Against Cancer, and Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau TIMELINE Winter 2017: Project planning and brand build-out Summer-Fall 2017: Statue locations determined Fall 2017: Sponsorship sales begin Fall 2017: Call to Artists Fall 2017: First statue unveiled for a sneak peek January 2018: Artists receive statues March 2018: Artists return completed statues April 2018: Statues prepared to go on the streets May 1, 2018: Preview party for sponsors and VIP May 6, 2018: Overnight install of statues May 7, 2018: Parade officially begins and all statues are unveiled May 2018: Merchandise sales begin with the University Book Store September 13, 2017: Parade concludes and statues are removed September 29, 2018: Auction and final farewell event MORE INFO For more information or questions on Bucky on Parade, please visit buckyonparade.com.
ARTISTS ENGAGEMENT OVERVIEW OVERVIEW Engaging in Bucky on Parade is a multi-part process. > Artists submit sketches of their vision for Bucky, complete with a name or theme for the statue envisioned. > A committee reviews the sketches to ensure that project guidelines are met. > Sketches are submitted to Bucky Sponsors to select the design for the statue they are sponsoring. > Artists are notified of their selection and then begin working on their statue. GUIDELINES Artists must comply with all guidelines and procedures outlined below. Artists may submit as many designs as they wish for consideration. Designs must be submitted by 5:00 pm, November 10, Designs can be submitted: Online at: By to: artists@buckyonparade.com Or by mail to: Artists Committee Madison Area Sports Commission ATTN: Diane Morgenthaler 22 E. Mifflin St., Suite 200 Madison, WI Artists must adhere to these four requirements: 1. Design must meet Bucky on Parade design guidelines: a. The artwork/design may not be political, derogatory, obscene, lewd, profane or defamatory in any way as determined by the Artists Committee and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Alcohol, tobacco, firearms/weapons and gambling references or images are not acceptable. b. The artwork may not contain a brand mark from any entity. c. The artist must be the owner of the elements of the artwork/design, or must provide documentation that they have received appropriate rights from third parties to display, reproduce or create derivative works of elements contained in the artwork. d. The use of the University of Wisconsin-Madison trademarks will be subject to University of Wisconsin-Madison approval. 2. Artists must submit a sketch (or sketches) of proposed design to the Artists Committee by the deadline date. 3. The Artists Committee and University of Wisconsin-Madison must approve the design before a sculpture is released to the artist and work can begin. 4. The artist must agree to and sign an Artists Agreement (overview follows).
Vandalism does occur with these types of displays. Objects that are attached to these sculptures that can be easily removed are attractive for such vandalism so it is important that these objects are secured to prohibit such removal. Repair of vandalized Buckys will be aggressively explored if possible and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The fiberglass sculptures themselves will weigh approximately 160 pounds. Each sculpture is six (6) feet tall and stands atop a six (6) inch round base that is a permanent part of the sculpture. The base should be incorporated into the design but must not be modified in shape or height. The base is designed to sit atop a concrete wafer that will weigh approximately 400 pounds. It is important to keep in mind that Bucky on Parade is an interactive event that allows the public to touch and feel the designs. Designs must be created with DURABILITY and public safety in mind. The audiences will be broad-based and of all ages and design should be appropriate for public display. AVAILABILITY OF BLANK SCULPTURES Artists selected are responsible for the pickup of blank sculptures, transportation and return of the completed sculptures. The sculptures will be available for pick up beginning in January The location is TBD but will be in the City of Madison. DESIGNS The fiberglass Bucky may be painted, sculpted, transformed and adorned but the structural integrity and inherent design and physical look of Bucky cannot be compromised. FAST Corporation will be manufacturing the sculptures. Tips from FAST Corporation are included in the Artist Packet. FAST Corporation is also available to answer any specific questions you may have. SELECTION PROCESS Artists may submit as many designs as they wish. The Artist Committee will meet to review the proposals to ensure that the designs conform to the standards outlined above. Once approved, designs will be presented to sponsors who will select from the approved designs. Artists will be notified immediately once a sponsor has selected their design. Notifications may be made as early as mid- December COMPLETION OF ARTWORK After the artists have completed the sculptures, the sculptures must be delivered by the artists to the original location of pickup so that they can be clear coated with automotive lacquer. This process is supported through the Bucky on Parade project and not the responsibility of the artist. > Artists will not be responsible for the installation or removal of the Buckys once they are being exhibited. > Artists may be requested to provide possible touch ups once the exhibit is underway. If the artist is not available for necessary touch-ups, another artist may be asked to perform the work. > All Buckys may require touch-up prior to final release of the sculptures to sponsors and artists will be contacted prior to that time to determine availability/assistance. > Before a Bucky is placed on exhibit, the completed sculpture will be inspected by a representative of the Artist and Operations Committees. If it is determined that the artist s completed Bucky has been produced in substantial conformity with the artist approved design, the Bucky will be put on display. ARTISTS AGREEMENT If selected, you will be required to sign an Artists Agreement prior to taking possession of a statue. The agreement will be available in early November.
The basic components of the artist agreement are: > The submitted artwork proposal and completed sculpture become the property of Madison Events, LLC. Submissions will not be returned. The artist waives all rights to the designs and completed sculptures. > The submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Artist Committee for compliance with the terms and conditions in the artists packet materials. > Once approved, the selected artwork will be made available to sponsors for their review and selection. Upon selection, you will be notified immediately. > You will agree that you are the original creator of your design; you will be liable for any changes that affect the sculptures structural integrity. > You will agree to depict the artwork as accurately as the artwork that was submitted and selected and will be responsible for the safe and secure application of the artwork to the sculpture. > All completed Bucky sculptures will be finished with a clear, automotive lacquer finish. This finish is very common in these projects and should not affect your artwork. It is necessary for weatherproofing the sculptures. Please note that the ONLY art medium that will not work for this art project is watercolor paint. > Proposal submission deadline is Friday, November 10, 2017 at 5:00 PM. > The approximate dates and times for application of the artwork to and completion of the sculptures will be January -March 30, These dates are subject to change. > Artists will receive a stipend of $500 when the sculpture is picked up and $1000 upon successful completion and delivery of the sculpture. Questions? We are sure you will have a few! Please feel free to call us and we ll do our best to answer them. Direct them to Diane Morgenthaler at or artists@buckyonparade.com. We look forward to receiving your designs and THANK YOU for your consideration!
FAST Corporation PO Box 258 Sparta, WI Phone: Fax: Call to Artist General Guidelines Each artist will receive a 6 tall Bucky Badger made of fiberglass weighing about 160 pounds. The fiberglass wall of each statue will vary somewhat in thickness, but will average around ¼ thick. Each Bucky stands atop a 6 high round base that is a permanent part of the statue. The base should be incorporated into your design, but do not modify the shape or height of the base. It is designed to fit over the top of a 400 pound cement wafer to secure statues for display. Each piece will be primed with a white polyurethane primer. This surface is ready for paint, but should be properly prepared to receive any materials or coatings to be applied. The primer will be hard and fully cured by the time artists begin working on their sculpture. Most Bucky on Parade sculptures will be displayed outdoors. The public will have full access to interact with the statues. In addition, the sculptures will be exposed to all weather conditions. Materials used and designs should be appropriate for public access and withstand all weather conditions. While the base statue cannot be physically modified by cutting or repositioning, other materials or items can be attached altering the overall appearance of the piece. Any additional materials attached should be secured in place permanently. This can be accomplished through a number of methods including fiberglass connections, epoxies designed for materials used, or mechanical connections like bolts or screws. Bonding agents or fasteners should be appropriate for materials attached and be designed to withstand all weather conditions including UV exposure, wind, rain, snow, and ice. The connections should be secure and permanent. While many coatings/paints will bond with the fiberglass statue, products used should be designed to hold up in the outdoors and withstand conditions described above. Finished sculptures will be coated with an all weather varnish or polyurethane to provide additional protection from the elements. Materials used in your application must be amenable to bonding with the top coat to be applied by others after artists complete their work. For more information on materials for painting or fabricating these sculptures, contact FAST Corporation at or via at Darren@fastkorp.com. Page 1
