1. Intrductin 1. Intrductin Art and Design equips students with the skills t enjy, prduce and engage with the visual arts thrughut their lives, and it has immense value as a GCSE subject. GCSE Art and Design prvides the pprtunity fr students t: explre bth cntemprary and histrical surces f art, craft and design first hand thrugh, fr example: visiting museums, galleries, art shws and fairs experiencing audi-visual prductins, including still and mving imagery their surrundings and envirnments take an individual apprach t their art, craft and design making develp the skills f selecting their best and mst apprpriate wrk fr presentatin. This getting started guide prvides an verview f the new GCSE Art and Design specificatin t help yu understand the changes yu might need t make t yur current curse delivery. We will be prviding a package f supprt t help yu plan and implement the new specificatin. Planning: in additin t the sectin in this guide, we will be prviding an editable curse planner and editable schemes f wrk that yu can adapt t suit yur department. Delivery: We will be prducing guidance dcuments t give extra supprt n hw t deliver Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli, and extra guidance n tw new requirements in the GCSE curse: drawing and written anntatin. Understanding the standard: We will be creating a cmprehensive bank f marked exemplar student wrk (fr bth Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli and Cmpnent 2 Externally Set Assignment acrss a range f abilities and endrsed titles) with accmpanying examiner cmmentaries, as well as free teacher marking training events, t help yu understand the standard f the new GCSE. Persnal, lcal supprt: Our subject advisr service, led by Susan Yung, will ensure yu receive help and guidance when yu need it. These supprt dcuments will be available n the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcel-gcses/art-anddesign-2016.html Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 1

2. What s changed? 2. What s changed? 2.1 What are the changes t the GCSE qualificatin? All GCSE qualificatins are ging thrugh a phased prgramme f refrm. There are sme general changes that will apply t all GCSE qualificatins. Fully linear structure: All refrmed GCSE qualificatins will be fully linear, with all assessments taking place at the end f the curse. This change has a relatively small impact n GCSE Art and Design. Students will have t cmplete Cmpnent 2 Externally Set Assignment (ESA) in the year they have been entered fr the qualificatin, and yu will need t ensure that they are respnding t the crrect ESA theme (the ne issued in their terminal year). New grading scale: All refrmed GCSE qualificatins will have a new grading scale, which means students will be graded frm 9 t 1 (where 9 is the tp grade) rather than frm A* t G. The diagram belw shws hw the tw grading scales cmpare (thugh nte that Ofqual is cautining against drawing direct cmparisns). Ofqual has issued the fllwing guidance n the new grading scale: Bradly the same prprtin f students will achieve a grade 4 and abve as current achieve a grade C and abve. Bradly the same prprtin f students will achieve a grade 7 and abve as currently achieve a grade A and abve. Fr each assessment, the tp 20 per cent f thse wh get grade 7 and abve will get a grade 9 the very highest perfrmers. The bttm f grade 1 will be aligned with the bttm f grade G. 2 Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015.

2. What s changed? Grade 5 will be psitined in the tp third f the marks fr a current grade C and the bttm third f the marks fr a current grade B. This means a grade 5 will be f greater demand than the present grade C. The gvernment has cnfirmed that grade 5 will be the new gd pass. Cntrlled assessment: Other GCSE qualificatins have seen a significant reductin in cntrlled assessment r the disappearance f cntrlled assessment altgether. Hwever, the refrmed GCSE Art and Design qualificatin will cmprise Persnal Prtfli (cursewrk) and an Externally Set Assignment, and bth cmpnents will cntinue t be 100% internally assessed and externally mderated. Changes t GCSE Art and Design cntent requirements The cntent requirements fr GCSE Art and Design have been revised. All awarding rganisatins specificatins fr GCSE Art and Design must meet these criteria. There have been sme small changes in terminlgy in the cntent requirements and the resulting GCSE Art and Design qualificatin: Old terminlgy Unendrsed Art and Design curse Endrsements, e.g. Fine Art, Phtgraphy Disciplines New terminlgy The unendrsed Art and Design curse is nw referred t as the Art, Craft and Design title Endrsements are nw referred t as endrsed titles Disciplines are nw referred t as areas f study The cntent requirements specify the areas f study all awarding rganisatins must include as a minimum fr each title ffered. As a cnsequence, yu will see significantly mre areas f study in the refrmed GCSE Art and Design qualificatin. These are listed in Sectin 2.2 Changes t the specificatin. The GCSE Art and Design qualificatin requires students t demnstrate the knwledge and understanding listed belw thrugh practical applicatin f skills t realise persnal intentins relevant t their chsen title(s) and related area(s) f study. Students will be required t knw and understand: hw surces inspire the develpment f ideas, drawing n: the wrk and appraches f artists, craftspeple and designers frm cntemprary and/r histrical cntexts, perids, scieties and cultures cntemprary and/r histrical envirnments, situatins r issues ther relevant surces researched by the student in the chsen qualificatin title and area(s) f study the ways in which meanings, ideas and intentins can be cmmunicated thrugh visual and tactile language, using frmal elements, including: clur line frm tne Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 3

2. What s changed? texture the characteristics, prperties and effects f using different media, materials, techniques and prcesses, and the ways in which they can be used in relatin t students wn creative intentins and chsen area(s) f study the different purpses, intentins and functins f art, craft and design in a variety f cntexts and as apprpriate t students wn wrk. Students will be required t demnstrate the ability t: develp their ideas thrugh investigatins infrmed by selecting and critically analysing surces apply an understanding f relevant practices in the creative and cultural industries t their wrk refine their ideas as wrk prgresses thrugh experimenting with media, materials, techniques and prcesses recrd their ideas, bservatins, insights and independent judgements, visually and thrugh written anntatin, using apprpriate specialist vcabulary, as wrk prgresses use visual language critically as apprpriate t their wn creative intentins and chsen area(s) f study thrugh effective and safe use f: media materials techniques prcesses technlgies use drawing skills fr different needs and purpses, apprpriate t the cntext realise persnal intentins thrugh the sustained applicatin f the creative prcess. Digital / nn-digital Tw new explicit requirements fr GCSE Art and Design qualificatins are fr students t submit evidence f drawing and written anntatin. We say explicit requirements because we already see evidence f drawing and written anntatin in lts f GCSE Art and Design submissins. Nw, thugh, it is a requirement fr students t submit evidence f drawing and written anntatin. We prvide additinal guidance n these requirements in Sectin 2.2 Changes t the specificatin. Changes t Assessment Objectives The GCSE Art and Design Assessment Objectives have been revised, althugh the changes are relatively small as yu can see frm the table belw. AO1 25% AO2 25% New Assessment Objectives Develp ideas thrugh investigatins, demnstrating critical understanding f surces Refine wrk by explring ideas, selecting and experimenting with apprpriate media, materials, techniques and prcesses Old Assessment Objectives Develp their ideas thrugh investigatins infrmed by cntextual and ther surces, demnstrating analytical and cultural understanding Refine their ideas thrugh experimenting and selecting apprpriate resurces, media, materials, techniques and prcesses 4 Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015.

2. What s changed? AO3 25% AO4 25% Recrd ideas, bservatins and insights relevant t intentins as wrk prgresses Present a persnal and meaningful respnse that realises intentins and demnstrates understanding f visual language Recrd ideas, bservatins and insights relevant t their intentins in visual and/r ther frms Present a persnal, infrmed and meaningful respnse demnstrating analytical and critical understanding, realising intentins and, where apprpriate, making cnnectins between visual, written, ral r ther elements The essence f the Assessment Objectives is the same students will still be expected t develp, refine, recrd and present. Hwever, there are subtle differences: AO1 has been simplified: Students need t demnstrate critical understanding f surces, and ne f the best ways f demnstrating critical understanding f surces is t shw that they have infrmed ideas and investigatins. AO2 remains largely unchanged: Students refine wrk by explring ideas, rather than refining ideas, but they are still expected t d this thrugh selecting and experimenting with apprpriate media, materials, techniques and prcesses. AO3 remains largely unchanged: As wrk prgresses gives a new emphasis n recrding as a cntinual prcess, which shuld take place thrughut the creative jurney. Althugh frms f recrding aren t explicitly mentined in the Assessment Objective, the subject cntent states that students shuld recrd visually and thrugh written anntatin. AO4 has been updated: There is a requirement fr students t demnstrate their understanding f visual language. By visual language, we mean use f the frmal elements and imagery t cmmunicate visually. Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 5

2. What s changed? 2.2 Changes t the specificatin Specificatin verview Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli 60% Frm centre-set theme(s) in cnsultatin with students Students prduce a prtfli f wrk demnstrating knwledge, understanding and skills, and cmprising supprting studies and persnal respnse(s) There are 72 marks available fr this cmpnent Internally assessed Externally mderated Cmpnent 2 Externally Set Assignment 40% The culminatin f the GCSE curse Frm an externally-set theme (released n 2 January) Centres devise a perid f preparatry study in which students create preparatry studies Students have a 10-hur sustained fcus perid in which t prduce persnal respnse(s) There are 72 marks available fr this cmpnent Internally assessed Externally mderated Changes t specificatin cntent We will n lnger ffer a shrt curse GCSE. All students will have t be entered fr a full GCSE qualificatin. We will cntinue t ffer the fllwing GCSE titles: Art, Craft and Design Fine Art Graphic Cmmunicatin Textile Design Three-dimensinal Design Phtgraphy Within each f the titles, yu will find significantly mre areas f study in respnse t the cntent requirements. The areas f study define the specialist practices within each title. It is expected that students will use techniques and practices frm acrss the areas f study as apprpriate t their creative intentins. Art, Craft and Design Fr Cmpnent 1, Art, Craft and Design students are required t create wrk assciated with areas f study chsen frm at least tw f the five endrsed titles. Fr Cmpnent 2, Art, Craft and Design students are required t create wrk assciated with at least ne area f study. Art, Craft and Design students are nt permitted t select bth sculpture in Fine Art and sculpture in Three-dimensinal Design as their chsen areas f study, nr are they permitted t select bth installatin in Fine Art and installatin in Phtgraphy as 6 Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015.

2. What s changed? their chsen areas f study. Fr mre infrmatin, see page 11 f the GCSE Art and Design specificatin. Fine Art Graphic Cmmunicatin Textile Design Threedimensinal Design Phtgraphy Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing areas f study: Drawing Installatin Lens-/light-based media Mixed media Land art Printing Painting Sculpture Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing areas f study: Advertising Cmmunicatin graphics Design fr print Illustratin Interactive design (including web, app and game) Multi-media Package design Signage Typgraphy Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing areas f study: Cnstructed textiles Digital textiles Dyed fabrics Printed fabrics Fashin design Installed textiles Sft furnishings Stitched and/r embellished textiles Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing areas f study: Architectural design Interir design Prduct design Envirnmental/landscape design Sculpture Design fr theatre, film and televisin Jewellery and bdy adrnment Ceramics Students culd develp wrk in at least ne f the fllwing Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 7

2. What s changed? areas f study: Dcumentary phtgraphy Pht-jurnalism Studi phtgraphy Lcatin phtgraphy Experimental imagery Installatin Mving image: film, vide and animatin All students will be required t submit evidence f drawing and written anntatin. Drawing Students will be required t demnstrate the ability t use drawing skills fr different needs and purpses, apprpriate t the cntext. Drawing is a new explicit requirement in GCSE Art and Design, and students will be expected t use drawing t supprt the develpment prcess within their chsen area(s) f study. Hwever, it is imprtant t understand that students are nt required t demnstrate technical mastery f drawing skills unless this is apprpriate t their chsen area(s) f study. Rather, we want t see all students using mark-making as a way f develping and expressing their ideas. Page 8 f the GCSE Art and Design specificatin gives infrmatin n what drawing is taken t mean in the cntext f this qualificatin, and further detail is given n the title-specific pages (pages 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21). In additin, we will be prducing a drawing guide which will shw visually just sme f the multitude f frms drawing might take in each f the titles. This dcument will be available t dwnlad frm the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcel-gcses/art-and-design- 2016.html There is sme infrmatin n assessing drawing in the Changes t assessment sectin belw, and mre assessment guidance will be prvided in the drawing guide. Written anntatin Students will be required t demnstrate the ability t recrd their ideas, bservatins, insights and independent judgements, visually and thrugh written anntatin, using apprpriate specialist vcabulary, as wrk prgresses. Written anntatin is a new explicit requirement in GCSE Art and Design but it desn t mean that students shuld stp recrding their ideas, bservatins, insights and independent judgements visually. Written anntatin shuld be purpseful, shwing analytical and critical understanding f their wn wrk and the wrk f thers. Page 8 f the GCSE Art and Design specificatin gives infrmatin n the purpse f integrated written anntatin. 8 Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015.

2. What s changed? In additin, we will be prducing a written anntatin guide which will shw just sme f the many ways in which written anntatin might be used t supprt a student s creative jurney in each f the titles. This dcument will be available t dwnlad frm the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcel-gcses/art-and-design- 2016.html There is sme infrmatin n assessing written anntatin in the Changes t assessment sectin belw, and mre assessment guidance will be prvided in the written anntatin guide. Changes t assessment The fur Assessment Objectives are equally weighted and students wrk must shw evidence f all fur Assessment Objectives. We have redesigned the GCSE Art and Design assessment grid: in respnse t teacher feedback s that the perfrmance descriptrs relate directly t the new Assessment Objectives s that the GCSE, AS and A level assessment grids have a cmmn structure, giving a cnsistent assessment experience acrss the qualificatins. The newly designed GCSE assessment grid will be used t assess all wrk prduced fr Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli and Cmpnent 2 Externally Set Assignment in all titles. The newly designed grid has: Six levels f perfrmance rather than five: Mre levels f perfrmance allws yu t differentiate between students f different abilities mre easily. Three marks per level f perfrmance rather than fur: Fewer marks within each level f perfrmance means that, nce yu have identified the crrect level, yu have fewer marks t chse between yu simply have t judge whether the student is just, mstly r fully in that level. 18 marks per Assessment Objective. 72 marks available in ttal (per cmpnent). Drawing Drawing can frm part f a student s evidence fr any f the fur Assessment Objectives, as relevant t the student s creative intentins. Therefre, drawing will be assessed thrugh all fur f the Assessment Objectives. Written anntatin Written anntatin can supprt a student s evidence fr any f the fur Assessment Objectives, as relevant t the student s intentins. Hwever, we expect written anntatin t be assessed primarily thrugh Assessment Objective 3 (recrd). When making assessment judgements abut drawing and written anntatin, yu shuld cnsider what the drawing and written anntatin evidence cntributes t the student s creative jurney and creative intentins. What value des the drawing r written anntatin evidence have within the bdy f wrk as a whle? There is mre infrmatin abut assessing GCSE Art and Design in Sectin 4 Assessment guidance belw. Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 9

3. Planning 3. Planning 3.1 Planning and delivering yur curse In the first instance yu need t decide, based upn the resurces available t yu and the areas f expertise within yur department, which f the GCSE Art and Design titles t ffer. Students must wrk in the same title fr bth cmpnents. Yu then need t plan a GCSE curse that gives students pprtunities t wrk in apprpriate area(s) f study. Fr Cmpnent 1, Art, Craft and Design students are required t create wrk assciated with areas f study chsen frm at least tw f the five endrsed titles. Fr Cmpnent 2, Art, Craft and Design students are required t create wrk assciated with at least ne area f study. Fr bth cmpnents, students fllwing endrsed titles are required t create wrk assciated with at least ne area f study within the chsen endrsed title. The GCSE Art and Design qualificatin is 120 guided learning hur curse f study. We have prduced an editable curse planner shwing ways in which the 120 guided learning hurs can be delivered ver 1, 2 r 3 years (but nte that we d nt recmmend delivering GCSE Art and Design in fewer than 120 guided learning hurs). The curse planner is available t dwnlad frm the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcelgcses/art-and-design-2016.html Inductin perid If time allws, we wuld recmmend building an inductin perid int yur GCSE Art and Design curse t give students the chance t start develping the knwledge, understanding and skills that will underpin the rest f the curse, including pprtunities fr mark-making and recrding written bservatins, withut the pressure f prducing wrk fr assessment. As the curse planner suggests, students culd be given the pprtunity t generate and develp ideas by cmpleting a small discrete prject. We wuld recmmend that wrk prduced during the inductin perid is nt submitted fr assessment unless yu and yur student feel it evidences the creative jurney the student has been n. This will give students the freedm t experiment and express their ideas withut wrrying abut assessment. If resurces are available, an inductin perid is als an excellent time t try t rganise enrichment pprtunities, such as gallery visits, wrkshps with lcal artists, craftspeple r designers, r visits t areas f lcal interest. Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli The Persnal Prtfli is a bdy f practical research and develpment leading t the creatin f a persnal respnse(s) relevant t the student s wn ideas and chsen areas f study. Centres are free t devise any theme(s), prject(s) r tasks(s) apprpriate t their students and resurces. They may each have a separate fcus r be intercnnected. We dn t place any restrictins n centres in terms f task-setting fr the Persnal Prtfli, hwever it s very imprtant that the tasks set give students the pprtunity t: address all f the Assessment Objectives 10 Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015.

3. Planning prduce evidence f drawing and written anntatin wrk in apprpriate area(s) f study shw a cherent jurney with a sustained fcus. We have prduced a Persnal Prtfli guide, which gives extensive advice n devising theme(s), prject(s) r task(s) fr Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli. The Persnal Prtfli guide is available t dwnlad frm the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcelgcses/art-and-design-2016.html Yu may find it beneficial t plan time in the curse t run a mck Externally Set Assignment, perhaps using the Sample Assessment Materials r past papers. This will give students a chance t experience what it is like prducing persnal respnse(s) in 10 hurs under examinatin cnditins t a theme set by Edexcel. Wrk prduced as part f this mck Externally Set Assignment culd be submitted as part f the bdy f wrk fr the Persnal Prtfli. Finally, yu may like t cnsider cmpleting the Externally Set Assignment early enugh t give students time t revisit their Persnal Prtfli wrk prir t submitting it fr assessment, after which time they may nt add t r alter it. The prprtin f the 120 guided learning hurs spent n this cmpnent shuld reflect its 60% weighting. Cmpnent 2 Externally Set Assignment The Externally Set Assignment represents the culminatin f the GCSE curse as it allws students t draw tgether all the knwledge, understanding and skills they have develped wrking n Cmpnent 1 Persnal Prtfli. The Externally Set Assignment paper will be released by Edexcel each year n 2 January. It will available t dwnlad frm the Edexcel website frm this time and hard cpies will be sent t centres based n estimated entries. The paper can be given t students any time after 2 January. Teachers will nt be able t access the paper befre 2 January. Centres are free t devise their wn preparatry perid f study it can start any time after the release f the paper and it must end nce the perid f sustained fcus has begun. The preparatry perid f study can be an excellent time t try t rganise an enrichment pprtunity. Fr example, a gallery visit, wrkshp r visit t a lcal area f interest culd supprt students respnses t the externally set theme, and culd inspire sme interesting ideas. Once the preparatry perid f study has cncluded, students may nt add t r alter their preparatry studies. Althugh students shuld be given access t their wn preparatry studies during the timed sessins, they are nt permitted t add t r alter them (and centres must ensure that n additinal wrk is brught in t r ut f timed sessins. The 10-hur perid f sustained fcus under examinatin cnditins, in which students wrk unaided t prduce persnal respnse(s) with reference t their preparatry studies, may take place ver multiple sessins (a maximum f fur within three cnsecutive weeks). Students must nt be given access t their preparatry studies r their persnal utcme(s) either between timed sessins r nce the timed sessins have cncluded. At the end f the curse Students shuld be given the time and pprtunity t select wrk carefully fr submissin. Make it clear t them that the wrk they select must shw: cnvincing evidence f all fur Assessment Objectives evidence f drawing and written anntatin Pearsn Educatin Ltd 2015. 11

Yu shuld reiterate t students that the quality f their wrk (and nt the quantity) is the imprtant factr, and be prepared t guide them in deselecting wrk that des nt cntribute anything t their assessment evidence as a whle. Yu must ensure that all student wrk is marked accurately and, where marking has been carried ut by mre than ne teacher in a centre, a prcess f internal standardisatin has been carried ut. There is mre infrmatin abut internal standardisatin n page 27 f the GCSE Art and Design specificatin. 3.2 Suggested resurces Students must have equal access t IT resurces. The resurces (media, materials) required will depend bth n the titles delivered and the chsen area(s) f study. We have prduced a dcument cntaining cntextual references t supprt teachers delivering and students taking GCSE Art and Design. While they are rganised by title, it is extremely imprtant t remember that there is great value in students lking at a wide range f visual stimuli acrss different titles and areas f study t help them understand hw ther artists, craftspeple and designers use visual language, prcesses, materials and techniques in their wrk. These cntextual references are available t dwnlad frm the GCSE 2016 Art and Design pages: http://qualificatins.pearsn.cm/en/qualificatins/edexcelgcses/art-and-design-2016.html 3.3 Delivery mdels One f the strengths f the GCSE Art and Design qualificatin is its flexibility. We recmmend that centres design a curse f study which is apprpriate fr its students and resurces, drawing n areas f staff expertise. T supprt centres in s ding, we have prduced an editable curse planner and editable schemes f wrk (ne fr Cmpnent 1 and ne fr Cmpnent 2).
